DH says he has read this on a local paper this evening. I am trying to find things and it does say July but not neccessarily the 1st. We have a holiday booked to Spain on the 2nd and we really don't want to go!
Its our first in years and the kids are only 7 & 4. It won't be the holiday we wanted for them at all.
Has anyone else read this today?

Right now I imagine most of the world is laughing at us. I would be surprised if they are willing to accept us into their country.

I have a holiday to Mallorca booked end of August. I'm still unsure what I think will happen.

Teacher12345 · 26/05/2020 21:04

@Devlesko I very much doubt we would be visiting bars, crowded beaches and pools in the UK so why would I want to do it Spain? They may have less cases but what about the journey there? What about the thousands of people in the airports and the few hundred on the plane sharing the circulated air? If we could travel on a private jet - without passing through a public airport I would consider it.

And the apparent arrival at the airport 4 hours early, and wearing a mask for the whole flight and no food or drink served on board...

DH made me pay balance for our hol in August out of fear of no refund if cancelled. But now it looks like the various arms of the industry will force people to have a pretty miserable holiday.

And I do worry about what happens if you fail temperature checks at the airport coming home, or what happens if anyone feels unwell.

Devlesko · 26/05/2020 21:16

It wasn't about the fewer cases, it was the fact they obviously managed it a lot better than us.
I wasn't saying you should go, not sure I would.
but I still think it's less likely to catch it there than here.

Mbc124 · 26/05/2020 21:18

Scorcher this week here, get the paddling pool out, crack open the Corona and buy a bit of Spanish tapas from M and S food and bobs yer uncle.

Roselilly36 · 26/05/2020 21:20

I can understand your concern OP. I wouldn’t want to be a passenger on a flight at the moment either given the choice.

Is there any option to delay your trip with the travel operator? if that isn’t possible, unfortunately travel insurance doesn’t cover disinclination to travel, as you probably know.

Spain is further down the road than us, Covid wise and things are getting back to normal, but not perhaps what you would usually expect, so I am surprised that they would wish to welcome UK nationals. Economic decision no doubt.

No harm in waiting to see how things develop, a lot could change. And if you decide to go, you can always get your hair sorted in Spain, I usually have my hair done, it’s a nice quiet experience as I don’t speak Spanish.

Good luck.

Igotta · 26/05/2020 21:21

The issue is that these countries need the tourist pounds.

I would cancel but I think they will expect people to go if the flights and hotels are open.

EasterIssland · 26/05/2020 21:24

Do you have travel insurance ? If so . If fco still is against travel but essential then you can claim. Otherwise doubt you’ll be entitled to a refund. Maybe you can modify the dates If allowed.
But yes there won’t be a quarantine in Spain and it’ll be “business as usual” tho with restrictions in hotels and beaches

GabsAlot · 26/05/2020 21:25

its jsut in the paper it doesnt mean you can go nor that the flight is still going

jet2 say theyre doing some flights not all-and atm u definitely have to quarantine when u get back al of you

if it does go though you will prob lose your money they dont refund if they dont cancel

lyralalala · 26/05/2020 21:28

If your kids don't have passports then you are worrying needlessly imo.

Even if the passport office got back up and running to full pelt tomorrow there's a backlog of passports that people applied for before lockdown to get through, plus any applications that have been sent in during lockdown. They've been running on a seriously skeleton staff

BIL applied for a renewal in March and hasn't got his yet so no chance you'll get them in 4 weeks.

Darbs76 · 26/05/2020 21:30

Even if allowed (doubt it will be) I wouldn’t risk it personally. Be far better to reschedule to next year. I won’t be taking over overseas holidays this year, rubbish but won’t kill us. Also I wouldn’t rely on info from newspapers - just follow government advice

Hadenoughfornow · 26/05/2020 21:35

IMO its so they don't have to cancel. The Spanish Govt know most of us won't go. But if they can stop the holidays from being cancelled then surely the hotels still get paid.

We won't be going. We will only lose a deposit thankfully but its really pretty shit for British tourists.

I hope the Govt step up and say we don't recommend the travel, but we'll i very much doubt that. We've already seen how little respect they have for the common people in the last few days.

vickibee · 26/05/2020 21:35

We have a Cyprus holiday booked with tui in August. I would rather not go and am hoping it will be cancelled, I have heard you have to go into quarantine on return so how would that work
Also we have booked AI so we would not be getting the holiday we paid for.
Also we have an asd child so it really wouldn’t work anyway.

Hadenoughfornow · 26/05/2020 21:37

You won't get to cancel a holiday or claim on insurance if you don't have a passport.

bananaskinsnomnom · 26/05/2020 21:40

The lack of passport could be your saviour - the airlines and hotels (and travel industry as a whole) has lost so much money - as soon as the FCO lifts the warning on travel, there’s no chance in hell anyone will be entitled to money back, and I reckon it will become harder to swap dates and get vouchers too.

I’ve got a holiday to the States in October and if there’s one country that makes me feel better about ours it’s the good old USA. Me and my friend booked this trip in December, it includes 2 cities and Disney World (the latter of which is completely shit right now) but our airline doesn’t even want to hear from anyone yet unless you are due to fly in the next week so we’ve been advised to literally just wait until Mid/late September and go from there.

OhCantThinkOfANewName · 26/05/2020 21:46

Dd meant to be off to Croatia with the scouts in August, I was absolutely sure it would be cancelled. Now I don’t think it will be, so we’ll have to take the £750 hit.

Piggywaspushed · 26/05/2020 21:48

I think school and youth organisation trips won't be going ahead for some time because of bubbles etc. Where that leaves costs, who knows!

I also wonder about extended family holidays.

nasalspray · 26/05/2020 21:49

I don't really understand. If neither of you want to go and your kids don't even have passports, what is the dilemma? Cancel or postpone or don't turn up.

KoalasandRabbit · 26/05/2020 21:53

They've not announced anything yet but I've been concerned about this for a while but just have to wait and see. I booked a holiday all directly with hotels, airlines, transfers etc for this August to Thailand, Borneo and Perhentians and there's no way we can go on it but can we get refunds. At the moment I've cancelled quite a bit but got £4k at risk still, most of which is flights, rest is hotels all of which are refusing to refund including 1 "refundable" one. The flights I'm worried about if we lift our restrictions and so does other country probably won't get anything back for Air Asia, EVA Air we would lose £720 out of the £2.1k so would at least get most back assuming not bankrupt. They are strong financially.

I pulled DD out of Italy June school trip as school wouldn't cancel it and we've lost deposit on that. But thought it better than risking whole lot. School since cancelled once full amount was due and their insurance claim I think will go through as it was 1 June and Italy's only allowing in from 3 June but whole amount could have been lost or a risky trip with lots closed.

corythatwas · 26/05/2020 21:53

Can't get over the posters suggesting it's ok to go if Spain has fewer cases or is further along the curve than UK or if you could somehow manage to avoid the aeroplane. So it doesn't matter then if you risk carrying infection from here to there? Given the atrocious record of infection management in this country, I should jolly well hope the Spanish govt follow the example of the Greek and do not allow British visitors in. Not because I am mean towards British holidaymakers but because Spanish lives matter.

CaveMum · 26/05/2020 21:54

@vickibee you know that Tui are allowing anyone who is booked up to 31st August to reschedule for another date with no admin charges? We moved our August 2020 holiday to August 2021 last week.

Piggywaspushed · 26/05/2020 21:55

@nasalspray

I don't really understand. If neither of you want to go and your kids don't even have passports, what is the dilemma? Cancel or postpone or don't turn up.
I should imagine she would rather like not to lose all her money?

If you cancel yourself - no refund.

nasalspray · 26/05/2020 21:57

If you cancel yourself - no refund.

And if neither of you want to go and your children don't have passports then you take the hit.

Hadenoughfornow · 26/05/2020 21:57

cory so let the Spanish govt ban us then! What the Spanish government are doing though is saying we can go so that we don't get a refund. Most of us provbbly won't go anyway as we do actually care about our families and won't want to risk the plane.

But it means loads of Brits out of a load of money for holidays they don't get to go on. And that means a lot less money to be spent in the UK.

Teacher12345 · 26/05/2020 21:57

@nasalspray the dilemma is that if the FCO says we can travel and we choose not too, we won’t be eligible for a refund. If the FCO say no travel, then we will get our money back. We are due to fly one day after the date currently mentioned which is rubbing the salt in the wound.
