Anyone else with family like this?

My sister doesn’t believe corona virus is a real thing and is even off to meet up with friends today (one who has travelled down from Manchester) any time I mention it she tells me to “do my research” and that it’s not real. Does anyone else have family members or friends that don’t believe it’s real?

Music101 · 23/05/2020 16:47

No - mine all know it’s real.

How old is your sister, and what research is she referring to?

crosser62 · 23/05/2020 16:49

Erm what?

Is this a thing? Do people actually believe it’s not real?

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 16:55

She’s 32, I haven’t done any of the research as I’m not interested but it’s so draining, she thinks the vaccine is to put a chip inside everyone, this is someone who use to be very sensible so it’s out of character but she claims to have “done her research” and knows it’s fake, I honestly don’t know anyone sticking to the rules, I feel like the only one. She thinks the whole thing has been made up.

I know there are lots of people who question how bad covid is for the majority and lots of people who don’t agree with some/a lot of measures we’re taking but to think it’s not real?

Actually there was that one chap in America who was pretty vocal about it and then backtracked when his wife died and he got ill... some people just don’t want to benefit from the lessons of those who go before them.

I hope your sister is never proven wrong. How worrying for you.

longtimecomin · 23/05/2020 17:00

One of my friends thinks it's a political thing created to infringe on our privacy! And it's no where near as bad as the news says.

WhyNotMe40 · 23/05/2020 17:01

I would genuinely question her mental health if as you say she's normally very sensible and it's out of character

Mrskeats · 23/05/2020 17:04

That's v weird
Some people believe such rubbish
The anti vax brigade for a start

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 17:10

She’s definitely not mentally unwell, she believes it’s 5g, and mentions it being about bill gates, she’s always vaccinated but has now started saying she will never vaccinate her child again if she has another one, any time I question it I get told to do my research.

I've just realised today after seeing a couple of posts on a friend's SM that she's also like this OP. It's very disconcerting as she was, I believed, a relatively rational human!!! (I say relatively..she runs her own 'MLM' selling weight loss coffee, very fanatically!) Despite the MLM though, this 'fake-virus' thing I find shocking! She's actively promoting it now with videos and MEMES!

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 17:20

Glad, it’s not just me then that knows someone like this, she’s certainly not mentally unwell. She’s a teacher and is still working, she thinks everyone else following the rules is crazy, she believed it at first but then said things didn’t add up and she decided to look deeper and apparently the truth is out there Confused

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 23/05/2020 17:29

apparently the truth is out there

Sorry but Grin are the x files an old glimmer reference nowadays?

I quite like a conspiracy theorist who will throw a load of sources and examples at you to talk about, your sister just sounds lazy tbh.

There was a screen shot going round of a conversation where someone was calling people wearing masks sheeple and making out they were idiots for believing the science. They basically said ‘so you’re going to believe a load of people with an ‘agenda’’. The answer was ‘yes I bloody am you dick, I’m going to believe the scientists and medical professionals over an internet random in the middle of a pandemic’

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 17:33

I’ve asked her to provide links to what she is referring to and get told to do my own research! she mentions David icke a lot.

OP posts:
PasserbyEffect · 23/05/2020 17:55

she’s certainly not mentally unwell.

Actually she sounds paranoid to me (people drawn to conspiracy theories often are)
It's not a value judgement, by the way. Extreme stress can trigger paranoid episodes in previously mentally stable people.
And being a teacher doesn't make you immune to indoctrination (cults often manage to recruit fairly well educated people like teachers, doctors, engineers...)

bengalcat · 23/05/2020 17:57

I’d question her mental health esp as you mentioned her view that the vaccine is just to put a chip in you - watch that space

Deelish75 · 23/05/2020 18:00

Apart from an older man in a supermarket queue just before lockdown and a youngish woman who pops up on a local Facebook group I've not really experienced anyone calling it fake and a hoax.

Has your sister struck up a friendship new recently who may be influencing her?

Deelish75 · 23/05/2020 18:00
  • with someone
PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 18:02

I think she is just believing all the things she’s reading. She says “I bet if someone told you a year ago the whole world would be in lockdown you wouldn’t have believed it either”

OP posts:
ElectricTonight · 23/05/2020 18:04

I don't think she's mentally ill.

I think she's been watching too many YouTube videos, but once you open that box it's hard to get out of it I've been there myself and now I'm just a confused soul it's not nice at all.

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 18:04

I’m not aware of any new friends but I haven’t actually asked her that, according to her everyone has just “wised up” tbf where I live not a single person seems to be following the rules.

OP posts:
ElectricTonight · 23/05/2020 18:06

I've also heard about the chip in the vaccine. I'm sure it's all to do with the NWO (new world order) it's all over YouTube but it's not exactly research, they are conspiracies which many people believe in them.

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/05/2020 18:13

Yes I have a cousin like this. God knows what has happened to her, she went off radar for a while and then popped up a vegan, anti vaxxer, conspsiracist nutter.

If you question anything she says she loses the plot and then uses the go to line of "educate yourself"
Most bizarre

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 18:15

Yeh she’s definitely believing all the conspiracy theories, she said things will never go back to how they were and that it’s population control.

OP posts:
arianwe · 23/05/2020 18:15

Sounds exactly like my parents! They think it's all a load of sh*t and keep bombarding me with links to conspiracy theories. I said I wasn't interested when my Mum sent me the first load of info as I had a week old baby! Yet she has kept on sending stuff.

She wants to meet in her garden and says she has loads of stuff she needs to fill me in about. She can look in to what she wants but don't force it down my throat.

She says Coronavirus peaked in UK in January, that we've all had it and the government are trying to keep everyone apart so that they can't share information about it etc. She told me that she is trying to get the info out to as many people as possible and that she is writing to the local MP. She's lost the plot. Can't imagine the MP is going to take much notice! scared to see her next as I know she will bombard me with More info.

110APiccadilly · 23/05/2020 18:45

I think some authoritarian types see this as a perfect excuse. I'm also not convinced the benefits of lockdown outweigh the risks, certainly not for months on end, though I was sympathetic to the initial idea of not overwhelming the NHS.

However... neither I nor anyone I know doubts that there is a real virus.

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 18:51

They always say do your research when you ask, or look for yourself, she’s never sent any proof, just memes which I’m suppose to take seriously Hmm mainly of bill gates. She also won’t respect the rules asking me to bring my dd round so her neighbour can do her hair (she does it sometimes) apparently I’m just choosing to “take the blue pill”
