Anyone else with family like this?

My sister doesn’t believe corona virus is a real thing and is even off to meet up with friends today (one who has travelled down from Manchester) any time I mention it she tells me to “do my research” and that it’s not real. Does anyone else have family members or friends that don’t believe it’s real?

Not family, but a friend of mine called the other day. She doesn't believe it's real and thinks its an intentional distraction from something else. Didn't know what to say to her.

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 19:07

Probably distraction from 5g that’s what they seem to think, apparently they need something to “cover up” the deaths so have made up a virus.

My DB is a paranoid schizophrenic, initially he said it was a conspiracy.

He eventually started to accept the lockdown but believes the virus is something the governments created to keep us under control.

Does your sister suffer from a serious mental health issue?

ShambalaHambala · 23/05/2020 19:09

I tried explaining to her that my friend is an anaesthetist in a major hospital and has been treating covid day in, day out, that he hasn't seen his wife and child for 5 weeks, and that the amount of painful death he has witnessed has left him on the verge of breakdown. She still wasn't having it.

GinWithRosie · 23/05/2020 19:10

My MLM friend keeps listing ‘Wake Up Britain’ propaganda stuff. It’s quite worrying actually 😢

Lipz · 23/05/2020 19:14

One of my sister's is the same. I don't talk anymore about the virus with her because I end up all agitated afterwards.

We've had 5 people known to us die from it and she still insists they died from flu!

She's working as normal even though her boss told her she can work from home, she got keys opens up and works at her desk.

The thing that really shocked me is when she rang me to complain that she couldn't get a flight to me as she wanted to visit Shock even after that she still doesn't believe the virus is real.

Nombie · 23/05/2020 19:15

All my family are isolating and heeding warnings. Someone at my partners work has died from it and others have been really sick so we all know it's very very real.

However as to the later comment on her becoming an anti vaxxer my mother turned into one of those. She's quite hippy dippy in some ways but always had a healthy respect for science and now suddenly one day she says to me, I'm so sorry I vaccinated you and rambled on about infertility. So much so I got paranoid about my fertility. Turns out it's fine (16weeks now) but still caused some stress when TTC which happened very quickly thankfully. It's crazy how normal people can watch documentaries or TED talks and their whole world view change.

Hang in there maybe it's just a phase.

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 19:28

She has no history of mental illness, it’s hard to avoid the subject as she constantly brings it up, or invites me to her house all the time. Going to have to try harder to avoid the subject.

The most worrying thing is not her mental health (which must be in doubt) but the fact she is a teacher!

Annamaria14 · 23/05/2020 19:49

Though I don't know what is going on, I don't think what your sister said is strange at all. We have been controlled.

What I think is more strange is people who blindly follow what the government (just human beings like you and I ) tell them.

The government is corrupt. They were talking about criminal charges for Boris Johnson this week.

PumpkinP · 23/05/2020 20:01

Yes she said people will do whatever the government tell them to without question.

Apparently a lot of people at work think the same as her.

GinWithRosie · 23/05/2020 20:37

So @Annamaria14 are you saying that you don’t believe that this pandemic is real? That we are all fools for believing that there is a novel virus currently killing thousand upon thousands of people all over the world?

Do you believe it is safe to go back to an entirely normal way of life tomorrow?

Realitea · 23/05/2020 22:34

I work for, or should I say “worked” for a lady who is the same, OP. It makes me so angry and I was bombarded so many links to videos from conspiracy theorists saying it was 5g and how vaccinations are poison.. she started getting really angry with me for not going back to work and refusing to let me wear any PPE (I was her cleaner) that I have decided I’m never going back there again.
I think some people just cling on to the wrong ideas.

bombaychef · 23/05/2020 23:52

Realities a friend of mine is the same. I massively respect his opinion on many many things and have read some of it, but it's also cultish

Flaxmeadow · 24/05/2020 00:04

No my family and friends are not conspiracy theorists but I caught a taxi the other day, for the first time in months, and the driver started rambling on about "there is no virus, it doesnt exist" and "do you know anyone who has had it, no one has had it...".

I started really ignoring him when he brought "9/11" and "all that" into the conversation

The best part of it was, he was wearing a mask HmmConfused

Bluewarbler27 · 24/05/2020 00:28

I know lots and lots of people who have theories about how bad the virus actually is. Not sure I know anyone who actually thinks it’s fake though. I suppose If you don’t know anyone who’s had it or died from it, it’s hard to believe.

I don’t know Anyone first hand who has had it or died from it but have heard of people via others.

Music101 · 24/05/2020 06:10

@Annamaria14 so do you believe that the governments of a large portion of the world have all, at the same time, decided to dupe their citizens?

How would that work and what would be their aim?

BelfastNonBlonde · 24/05/2020 06:28

Husbands cousin

GinWithRosie · 24/05/2020 08:47

@Bluewarbler27 until last week I didn’t know anyone close/first hand either...but like you, still knew without a doubt that this was a very real and horrendous pandemic. Last week however, sadly, I found out that three people I know had/have had it, and that one of my friends mum died yesterday. Some friends of mine have been devastated by this and lost more than one family member. I’m astonished (and concerned!) by the claims from some people that this is some kind of mass hoax! What on earth is the mindset of these folks?? 😱

begoniapot · 24/05/2020 10:21

Does you sister wear a tin foil hat? She sounds bonkers. I mean seriously, that is an odd odd explanation for ignoring a pandemic.

PumpkinP · 24/05/2020 10:55

We don’t know a single person whose had it or died from it, we are both in London, so I suppose to her, that confirms that it’s fake.

OP posts:
GinWithRosie · 24/05/2020 11:00

By that reasoning though OP, soooo many things must also be fake! I mean, that’s just completely barmy! I don’t know anyone who has had a heart attack, or died in a car crash, or been kidnapped and tortured by the Taliban, but I know these things happen! They are not ‘fake news’ ffs!! Surely your sister must be able to apply this same logic?

SimonJT · 24/05/2020 11:00

I have a colleague who sounds similar, she sent her ‘interesting’ theory in a group email, she has since had a verbal as it is encouraging members of staff to put other members of staff in harms way.

I would be tempted to inform her school, if she isn’t taking it seriously it is likely she is risking her students health, there is also the risk that she is saying these things around students.

Uhoh2020 · 24/05/2020 11:01

My DB! He Is big into conspiracy theories and media manipulation. There is a research to prove whatever you want to believe if you look hard enough.

PumpkinP · 24/05/2020 11:03

I guess with how contagious it’s suppose to be she finds it’s odd that we don’t know a single person whose had it.
I mean there was a lot of scaremongering with people saying you can catch it from the post, plastic bags, shopping etc.
