DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

@getofyourhighhorse I agree she could hardly stand up and say too much but she did basically stay at home unless a safeguarding issue and use common sense , she never once condoned what he did and explicitly said she wasn't commenting on his case

strugglingwithdeciding · 23/05/2020 19:30

I will be surprised if he hasn't resigned by Monday morning

PerkingFaintly · 23/05/2020 19:31

they must prove that no one in London could have cared for the child had they actually been too ill to care for him.

And not just no one already in London, but no one able to travel to London.

Having a symptom-free carer poised to travel to them, who would also self-isolate for 14 days on leaving, obviously creates the least risk.

In fact, that plan would have worked out doubly well because they claim that, in the event, they didn't need to call on the help. So no one would have travelled at all.

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 19:31

So did DC.Unless you’re claiming he teleported back from Durham.

How else would he get back to Downing Street for essential work?

Smileyoriley · 23/05/2020 19:32

@The80sweregreat: Yes, what an appalling mysogenist twat! Says it all that he was the only apologist hack the Tories could dredge up from the abyss! Bottom feeder columnist from The Snail on Sunday, apparently- I bet that's a gripping read with your Corn Flakes!

NotTerfNorCis · 23/05/2020 19:36

The government has lost all credibility over this.

Either denounce the toerag Cummings or reinstate Ferguson and rescind the fines of everyone else who broke lockdown.

LotusFlowers · 23/05/2020 19:36

The plot thickens! It seems he's been galavanting all over the place....ShockShockShockShockShockShockShock

BlueBrian · 23/05/2020 19:37

My MP is Mark Francois so no chance he'll be sympathetic; he tends to like most things Boris gets up to.
Wouldn't be so sure it'll work out like that, Cummings upset a lot of the ERG crew, they're not big fans of his, they could well stick the knife in.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:38

It will put me off my cornflakes reading anything he had to say about old Dom and his dodgy antics / bending of the rules.
It's all ok! He can do what he likes! It's all gone bonkers etc etc.
Grr grr 😖

beachcomber70 · 23/05/2020 19:39

So to protect a 4 year old when a parent [maybe both parents] has corona virus...is to put him/her into an extremely enclosed space with them for hours on end [without a toilet break? yeah right], touching him/her, handing him/her drinks/food etc. etc. !

I wouldn't.

I haven't been indoors with or in a car with one other person since March 16th, because I wouldn't want to risk their health or mine. I don't bend rules to suit myself. I miss my family and grandkids like mad. And I live on my own. I would love a trip out in the car with a friend. 3-4 hours conversation would also be wonderful.

All this interpret the 'guidance' with 'common sense', to 'suit your circumstances'...is not what we were told. DC should be sacked. He won't resign...too arrogant. And dumb if he thinks the public are going to accept his irresponsibility and selfishness. We have a long memory.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:40

Right, I'm off to email Mark!
His probably off for Whitsun but it's worth a go I suppose.
I am so livid about all this.

doubleshotespresso · 23/05/2020 19:42

@strugglingwithdeciding I really do hope and pray you're right.

Though the track record of this shit show of a government doesn't bid well .....

Hitchyhero · 23/05/2020 19:43

Honestly... I've been fed up with the tories for a long long long time... But today I have never been so angry.

If they held their hands up and said he was wrong to do that, I'd have gotten on with my day. The fact that they've wheeled out MPs to defend him has really peed me off.

I havnt seen my family in a long time. Its been nerve wrecking thinking about what to do if we get the virus especially with a toddler in the house. The message was clear - stay indoors, self isolate to not spread the virus, don't visit family.

Except now that's not true. You can travel anywhere and hand over your kids to family. That's exactly what causes the virus to spread, but because they messed up they are willing to confuse the message to try and get away with it.

Let that sink in.... Instead of admitting a mistake they would rather lie and confuse the message abiut lockdown rules which will cause more deaths then necessary.

doubleshotespresso · 23/05/2020 19:44

@Clavinova just who is DC's work essential to?
Genuine question as from where I'm sitting there would be many more alive today without this kind of work

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 23/05/2020 19:45

I rarely get especially annoyed about politics but I am disgusted with what has transpired today. Gaslighting in the extreme. The government has lost any shred of respect they had left and Im supposed to trust these people with decisions like whether or not it's safe to send my child to school?! Shameful

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 19:47

Clavinova just who is DC's work essential to

His job title is Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister according to wiki.

Ohmymg · 23/05/2020 19:50

Looks like he’s screwed now. Spotted having a family walk in Barnard Castle and spotted again in Durham mid April. Makes the total bullshit defense today more laughable

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 19:51

Let that sink in.... Instead of admitting a mistake they would rather lie and confuse the message about lockdown rules which will cause more deaths then necessary.

And now, according to the Guardian, it seems that he didn't self isolate once in Durham, returned to London and then went back to Durham again.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:53

I wish I was a senior advisor to the government. I'd tell them to get shot of Dom. It's not hard is it?
Plus he probably earns zillions to boot.

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 19:54

Maybe they did self isolate in London after all, and the 'need family help' story was just a cover for unrelated journeys to Durham?

chomalungma · 23/05/2020 19:54

It's going to be an interesting Sunday morning of TV shows with Marr and Rigby

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 19:55

When I say 'self isolate' I mean 'stayed in London till no longer felt ill', not 'self isolated until end of recommended quarantine period'.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:55

Marr tends to give an easier ride. I wished they could get Andrew Neil to stand in tomorrow but his gone missing too !

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 19:56

Looks like he’s screwed now. Spotted having a family walk in Barnard Castle and spotted again in Durham mid April. Makes the total bullshit defense today more laughable

Just seen that - the sighting on the 19th, yes - but if the family were travelling back to London on the 12th they would be allowed to stretch their legs and buy food.

WorriedMutha · 23/05/2020 19:57

As soon as I clicked on this thread I knew that Clavinova would be here somewhere telling us black is white and I wasn't disappointed.
A new article in the Guardian will damn him to hell as witnesses in the Durham area can place him visiting beauty spots and one of these occasions seem to be after he had returned to London (so did he go back again).
If Johnson tries to save him now Starmer will take him out at PMQs. He probably will anyway as this case has a kipper factor of 9.
