DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

Clavinova
So let’s see. We have how many millions of people in London? Imagine if all of us try and attempt to break the rules just once. Can you do the maths?

lljkk · 23/05/2020 19:01

I know it's not the same but it's not so far off being equally incapacitating... haven't most of us struggled with a GodAwful bout of norovirus at home where both you & the kid(s) have it going both ends... sometimes for a few days. You just get on with it, don't you? Or flu or migraines etc.

ellie2201 · 23/05/2020 19:01

I am furious about this. My dad died at start of lockdown and my mum has had to deal with all of it on her own. Grant Shapps said ‘in moments of crisis we turn to our family’. No shit Sherlock. Yet all of us have coped and managed. I haven’t felt this cross for ages!!

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 19:01

Saying that DC did nothing wrong and, in fact acted in an entirely reasonable manner is stupid. It means that people with Covid symptoms - particularly if they have children - have more freedom of movement than people who don’t have Covid symptoms

Yep, boiled down like that shows how ridiculous an excuse it is and how disgraceful it was of Jenny Harries to defend Cummings actions.

HelloMissus · 23/05/2020 19:03

Basically it’s ok to travel and move homes if you HAVE Covid but not if you don’t.

cantdothisnow1 · 23/05/2020 19:04

Crux of the issue appears to be whether the child was at risk of significant harm at the point that they made the journey.

In order to categorically state that he was, and therefore that the journey was essential, one must assume that it was impossible for his safety to be secured in his permanent residence.

The key question is, therefore, whether DC and his wife believed that the child was at risk of significant harm or death by remaining in London. If he was not then it is not an essential journey no matter what spin you wish to put on it.

This is what needs to be focused on. In order to show that then they must prove that no one in London could have cared for the child had they actually been too ill to care for him. Which frankly is completely unfeasible, even if they did not have family members living in the city.

SheWranglesRugRats · 23/05/2020 19:05

Neil Ferguson and Scotland's Chief Medical Officer clearly broke the rules more than once, over several weeks.

So did DC. Unless you’re claiming he teleported back from Durham.

lljkk · 23/05/2020 19:05

Police or DC... who's telling the truth about whether the police had a word with the family?

Poor lamb... DC was probably too ill with delirium to remember, that's the story, sure.

I am so sorry for your loss ellie Flowers

I think your anger is justified.

I feel upset to be honest, nine weeks I have been ill and no help with looking after my DC. I have been worried about accessing medical care as I would have to leave them. It is really shit to turn this round and play the caring parent card when everyone else was being told not to leave their home. It stinks to high heaven.

lyralalala · 23/05/2020 19:07

His wife said she came down with it on the 27th March. Apparently he came down with it the next day and was in bed for 10 days.

He was seen in his parents garden, with the Abba music playing, on April 5th. That doesn't add up.

I wonder if the fact that Boris went from being critisised and unliked to national hero when he was diagnosed played any part in just how serious we were told Cummings was....

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 19:08

Government policy is supposed to be that for the foreseeable future testing, tracking and tracing systems will enable people to isolate so that the virus is contained.

Now they seem to have announced that people with symptoms should only isolate if it isn’t too much trouble. How to they expect that to work?

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 23/05/2020 19:10

If you want to make your displeasure known please please write to your MP. Maybe a deluge of emails will have some weight?

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 19:11

Genuinely disappointed at the fuck off plebs messages coming from the MPs and Attorney General.

Really hope there's a u turn and the additional pressure via the birthday party allegations cause him to crack.

@evilpea I was saying this probably be glad to hand to another party to repay all money that's had to of been borrowed be like how labour handed over to tories last time round

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:14

That journalist defending him ( dan someone)
On the news today. Goodness me , he was awful.

doubleshotespresso · 23/05/2020 19:15

We have hit an unbelievable low today.... the arrogance of this man has me seething 😤

What an utter disgrace. If he's not forced to resign or sacked lockdown is at an end. What a vile , entitled and irresponsible man he is.

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 19:18

Not much point me writing to my MP. It's Cruella! She thinks we are all child haters for not agreeing.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:19

It appears the mixed messages we did get were not worth it then?
Maybe Tesco will take those blooming arrows away now and let me go round in peace.

strugglingwithdeciding · 23/05/2020 19:19

If after this had happened he had been transparent and explained what he did and that if you have no family locally etc you can get help with childcare then this may of been blown over and people would of known they had this option , the trouble is non of us really interpreted it like this so we didn't know . If it was all ok why has it taken this long to come out

bellinisurge · 23/05/2020 19:20

This is the first day I've been proper angry. Not just ruefully bearing it.
Shameless fucking bastard.

HatRack · 23/05/2020 19:21

In March 2020, it was reported in The Sunday Times that during a private engagement the previous month, Cummings had claimed that the government's strategy towards the coronavirus was "herd immunity, protect the economy and if that means some pensioners die, too bad".

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:25

My MP is Mark Francois so no chance he'll be sympathetic; he tends to like most things Boris gets up to.
He is seen out clapping for the NHS for a photo op. He'll write some rubbish about family values and safeguarding , the Grant Shapps lines no doubt.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 19:25

itsgetting
No, do write to Suella.
And get everybody you know who agreed with you to write to her.
Nothing scares the shit out of MPs more than knowing their days are numbered (even with an 80 seat national majority)
I know Sean thinks the sun shines out of her but many don't

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 19:27

the trouble is non of us really interpreted it like this so we didn't know . If it was all ok why has it taken this long to come out

It wasn't ok, until it had to be ok. Because making it ok meant shitty people could say DC was following the rules, and imply that the rest of us were too stupid / didn't love our kids because we didn't do it.

YogaLite · 23/05/2020 19:28

If he is career obsessed then clearly a hands off dad, I wonder whether he knows how to give his son breakfast - it's only female relatives apparently who do Confused
As Boris got ill and London was heading for a pandemic they just drove away as fast as they could...for granny's birthday.

Oh, and who says articles published by his wife (or any jurno for that matter) about their personal covid experience at home are totally true and not suitably embellished to make a good read.

Is he now second to royalty, ie unsackable??

I can see end of lockdown as well as end of this government in my crystal ball...
