This virus is not going to go away, a vaccine may never be developed, we are just going to have to get used to it as part of life

Nothing is going to be hugely
Different come September

Ebola was the fastest -5 years

I can’t find any research for swine flu but given it’s heavily related to normal flu maybe that’s why it’s not included as a ‘new vaccine’

They’ve not got a single vaccine yet to any cornovirus

daisymay133 · 19/05/2020 20:31

Yep quick google tells me swine flu was another strain of influenza

Coronavirus is new

Some sources say they worked for 7 years on Ebola vaccine

Porcupineinwaiting · 19/05/2020 20:53

Dont know where you're looking. First serious (ie properly funded) attempts at an Ebola vaccine started in 2014 and they had something usable under a "compassion usage" trial by mid 2015. It was this that was used in the West African outbreak.

The time taken to develop a vaccine is highly dependent on funding and effort. Both are determined by economics. There's a lot of money to be made out of a cv19 vaccine.

This X a million. One or more will be being rolled out early next year, I am confident. A virus trashing world economies and damaging individual politician's chances of being re-elected will have suddenly found itself with many multiples more in funding, effort and teams dedicated to getting a workable vaccine up and running compared to extremely severe viruses that "only" killed a few thousand poor people far from western economies.

Butterymuffin · 19/05/2020 21:07

The Oxford team seem confident. I'll probably take their statements over someone 'doing a quick Google' and pronouncing it impossible.

MinteeFresh · 19/05/2020 22:01

Reiterated on Horizon coronavirus right now. Chap from the Oxford unit saying they are getting enough doses ready for "early autumn" for "key workers etc" subject to trials and testing continuing to go well.

BBCONEANDTWO · 19/05/2020 22:23

@LilacTree1 The Asian` (Hong Kong) flu epidemic apparently killed estimated 4 million people globally. You're right as well there was no lockdown by the looks of it.

For a start most of NZ's tourists come from Australia, and the borders between the two countries will be open fairly soon

Not what my customs officer SiL working airside in Sydney has said. earliest she's been told at the moment is mid-to-late January.

Sorry, fairly soon was the wrong term to use - I meant in comparison with the borders being open to other countries. However, I did think it would be sooner than January - why so long?

DamnYankee · 20/05/2020 03:16

No, it won't go away.
Yes, a vaccine will be developed.
Treatments may be available sooner.
There might be a correlation between heat and the virus being destroyed mid-transmission...I will be interested to see what the summer holds.
Guarantee panic here in August as schools reopen, even if the numbers look good. ('Cause we're parents...Smile)
Still have a lot of faith in others.
And I think the holidays are looking good - if not perfect. (And are they ever???) Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 20/05/2020 14:13

Presumably because of the Christmas and summer holidays. Remember it's the long Summer break there at that time and so stopping too many visitors may be the thinking behind it.

Yes. I read an interview with one of the guys leading the Oxford team and he said this was the only time, in his long career in vaccinology (is that a word?) where he's had people phoning him up and offering him millions, as much money as he wanted. The scale of expertise and money being poured into this project - or rather, 100 projects all over the world - is unprecedented. Of course, that's still no guarantee that a vaccine will be found but along with other factors, it is reason for optimism.

Mumoftwo0357 · 20/05/2020 14:47

Testing and contact tracing will have changed by September - it will actually be up and running and proven to be a reliable system. And infection rates will be lower - more like the rates other countries have been opening schools at

Re Vaccine in sept

Government confirmed at the press conference today that it’d be 12-18 months at EARLIEST

So not Sept by any stretch

RoosterPie · 21/05/2020 20:19

Who said that? I only heard Chris Whitt’s say not likely this year.

RoosterPie · 21/05/2020 20:19

*whitty

IcedPurple · 21/05/2020 20:26

Yeah I missed that bit too. Who said it?

And the govt isn't actually in a position to 'confirm' anything regarding vaccine projects as they are not the ones running any of them, even if they have provided funds to the Oxford project.

Butterymuffin · 21/05/2020 20:36

In a reworked version of what I said earlier, I will take the words of what the Oxford team themselves say directly over any statement from the government, who have been shown many times now to make this stuff up as they go along and spout whatever figures and timelines best suit them personally.

Lardlizard · 22/05/2020 09:44

Oh that’s true about the sea, I guess the wind could carry it off pretty quick if the wind got up
