"Let our teachers be heroes"

I've seen the front pages of the daily mail and now the telegraph are attacking teachers unions because they want to ensure that the place is safe.

The headline was 'Let our teachers be heroes'. Frabkly, if it was safe they wouldn't need to be heroes. That headline implies its unsafe to go back and they are taking a risk.

I'm also wondering, as I'm sure teachers are.... How they will implement social distancing in nurseries. My 2 yo toddler was due to start nusury just before the lockdown but that's been delayed. When he does eventually go back when I think it's safe, how will teachers implement social distancing. He needs help with potty training. Most children his age won't have the developmental capacity to social distance. My child touches and kicks everything.

Think it's a bit ridiculous that these papers are attacking unions when they just want to be safe like everyone else. Think they are asking the right questions.

My child's (and my own) wish for them to be back at school is far far outstripped by the right of the teaching staff to a safe working environment.

I would want them to have to compromise on their own safety to teach my child anything.

I note the Daily Fail altered the the image to remove BAME children.

A nurse commented on being called a hero, along the lines of "calling us heroes makes our deaths more acceptable". I don't disagree with that.

There won't be social distancing in nurseries, there has never been any suggestion that there will be. They're asking teachers to go and do their jobs, which countless other people have been doing the whole time.

I work for the NHS in a mental health field,not nursing.

I'm called an 'nhs hero' and I hate it.

I never expected to be wearing ppe. It's not in my job role at all. My role normally I volves nothing whatsoever to do with physical health.

But here I am, taking people's temperatures, going to work each day coming into contact with different clients each day and in close proximity with colleagues (we ha e now all caught CV).

I didn't sign up for this but then neither did a lot.of people, teachers for one. We,and they,don't need to be seen as heros. We just need to be kept safe and retain a decent wage (not have it frozen moving forward etc...)

Our school has confirmed that as they are unable to social distance in the Nursery (preschool) rooms, they will only open to Rec, Y1 and Y6.

They have said they will not open the nursery until they can ensure they meet the requirements set by the govt.

I saw that and my immediate thought was “fuck off”.

It made me angry. It’s the job of teachers to teach our children and as part of that role make sure they are safe. Dead teachers can’t teach.

The Mail and Telegraph are nasty little tabloids.

Why should they be hero's or heroines?
They are human beings and worried about their working conditions and the children they have to teach. I call it common sense!

I doubt teachers' children want them to be dead heroes.

My DD is a teacher, I don't want her to be a hero, I want her to be safe.

My son sent me a link to the article today with the comment "I signed up to be a teacher, not one of the Avengers"

I genuinely don’t know.

I am a teacher. I didnt go into the profession to be a hero. I dont want to be clapped for my 'sacrifice' of putting my health after my job. I went into my job to teach children, to give them a good standard of education.

If I have to go back to work under the conditions the UK government are proposing the best I can do is babysit my students and constantly tackle kids who find it soul destroying to socially distance. I cant even go to see a kids work and answer a question they have. The best I can do is stand in the same room as them.

If you think I will be able to actually teach your kids, you are deluded.

The trouble is there’s going to be ‘risk’ in every job going forward for a long time. Teachers need appropriate PPE etc but also need to accept (as do we all) there is an element of risk to life at the moment. Obviously people who are shielding etc it’s different but for younger healthy people we need to get back to work to keep the economy going. Life isn’t perfect. I say this as a teacher.

The melodrama on this thread is ridiculous. If a teacher is vulnerable, of course they should shield. If not their risk of death if they get infected is very small indeed. We're not sending them over the trench into machine gun fire.
People have forgotten that lockdown was to flatten the curve and not stop infection. We'll all probably get it eventually.
