Football restarting. Why?

HMSSophie · 15/05/2020 07:48

If premiere league football - famously a sport played by people from the same household - restarts, WHY?

I am angered by this unreasonably. Football? Is that what we've come to? That the (primarily but not only) male masses need their dummy? That the footballers themselves can't lose a season in which to shine? That restarting will "justify" their obscene salaries?

Another female here who can't wait for football to come back. It's made the world feel even harder to cope with without it. Football is something you get emotionally invested in and look forward to. It's a huge part of so many people's lives. Just because some don't care for it doesn't mean it shouldn't come back when it's possible to do it safely.

And yes, also billions of pounds.

“The male masses”?!!!

Have you been in lockdown since the 1970s @HMSSophie?

Because people love it.
Because it brings untold pleasure.
Remember that? Pleasure?

Honestly, if the players are tested and it’s behind closed doors, what’s the problem?

At least you recognise YABU 😃

Football is good entertainment, there's loads of money involved, there's less risk if transmission than in the supermarket, and it's also, if you're worried, a good way to keep people at home just now. I'm looking forward to a Sunday afternoon idly watching some footy.

I personally can't wait to see Liverpool win the league Smile

Echo all the sentiments above about it being thousands of people's jobs.

Ridiculous post.

Some people will not be happy unless we all live in sackcloth and ring leper bells.

The footballers are paid to do a job, they can do it safely so why in God’s name should they not do it?

Seriously, this hysteria has gone far too far.

But also why not, plenty of people heading to work now and it's good for morale.

I also sense a bit of snobbery in the kind of why are they pandering to the oiks? tone. The male oiks, obviously 😃

Nothing to do with sport. This is driven by the money, it’s been all about that for a very long time.

The owners/management of some clubs have shown themselves for what they are during this public emergency. Unfortunately, most people will forget and keep buying the shirts each season 🤷‍♀️

If it is played behind closed doors then I can't see the problem 🤷🏼‍♀️

Football behind closed doors is one of the safest things to start up surely, a tiny contained number of people involved who can be tested regularly and bring back something that millions enjoy.

Where's the risk? Of all the things to get het up about in this crisis a controlled return to sport is not one of them, tbh you're being ridiculous

What is wrong with footballers doing the work which earns them money.

Someone needs to earn the money to pay the taxes which keep a quarter of the workforce on furlough.

The players, coaches, physio, medics even down to admin staff. People need to work.
And all the jobs connected to it, and the jobs connected to those jobs, etc. Eg, my job has nothing to do with football, but by a series of interconnections, it is crucial for my unrelated job that football starts up again.

For me, the lack of sport in the schedules is an unexpected bonus of lockdown, but I appreciate that many, many people are miserable without it, so 🤷‍♂️

Maybe they could compromise and it could start but they have to wear sackcloth?

JanewaysBun · 15/05/2020 09:36

Lol maybe it would be pretty entertaining if they changed the rules so it was just a footballer+WAG+kids, ibwould actually watch that!

I've thought from the start that it would be better to have football on behind closed doors than not at all. How I see it, all those millions of fans that watch football either at the ground or on tv week in week out will now be sat in doors watching football rather than out walking round shops or the streets spreading stuff about. Less people gathering is a good thing.

So will it just be football? Or can professional tennis go ahead? Singles tennis is one of the small number of sports which is actually permitted.

Anyone saying ‘money’ is 100% correct as football is a business which employs thousands of people (not just footballers). Why should this business not be given guidelines to return when the time is right like every other?

Plus, shock horror, many woman like football aswell!

'not be happy unless we all live in sackcloth and ring leper bells.*

It's going to be weirdly quiet without an audience but hopefully if the players wear bells it will help liven things up.

Its money money. Clubs would owe so much in telly revenue. Then depending on if it was cancelled how it was cancelled.
Long as done safely, isolation still happens if players test postive etc and no crowds actually gather it's fine.
Tbf a lot of players have spoke up against it anyway and want reassurance.

Though the date does keep getting pushed back.
