Football restarting. Why?

HMSSophie · 15/05/2020 07:48

If premiere league football - famously a sport played by people from the same household - restarts, WHY?

I am angered by this unreasonably. Football? Is that what we've come to? That the (primarily but not only) male masses need their dummy? That the footballers themselves can't lose a season in which to shine? That restarting will "justify" their obscene salaries?

OP posts:

Can't men do without football for a few months FFS?

AgeLikeWine · 15/05/2020 13:30

Can't men do without football for a few months FFS?

Outdated, sexist attitudes are not just a male thing, it would appear.

SimonJT · 15/05/2020 13:33

Footballers have their health closely monitored, so if they did contract it they would be at little risk of complications. People also forget that many sports people in clubs are PAYE so bring huge amounts of tax money to the UK.

We started rugby training two weeks ago, we’re just not doing contact at the moment. Rugby is typically pay to play, RL don’t give a shit about players and they’re trying to force three games a week when play is back.

B1rdbra1n · 15/05/2020 13:41

Because wealthy people want to stay wealthy, and they have the money to ensure it happens

Keepdistance · 15/05/2020 15:00

Tbh im annoyed they said they would turn around tests in 24h.
Plus i guess if we were paying to test care home staff and hcp that much we might have kept it out of care homes.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/05/2020 15:05

@MotheringShites I'm a Chelsea fan and quite happy with the position we are in now lol. Might not be a few games in

ViciousJackdaw · 15/05/2020 15:21

@Keepdistance Tests on club staff and players would be performed and paid for privately. No cost to the NHS. The failure to test care home staff (which I agree is a complete disgrace) is the fault of the government.

Iknitknickknacks · 15/05/2020 15:22

Money talks - the rest of us plebs will continue to follow the 2m rule in isolation.

If it doesn't make sense then it can't be right.

Sod it I'm off visiting - obviously there's organisations altering the rules to suit themselves. All things being equal - I will do the same.

Theluggage15 · 15/05/2020 16:05

It’s a business. Thousands of people are employed in the industry. Not exactly a job that can be done at home either and again, the virus is here to stay now, so things need to start happening again in whatever way they can. Millions of people love watching it. Footballers are paid high wages but also pay very high taxes.

Anyone talking about it just being men who watch football needs to grow up and stop with the outdated sexist stereotypes.

I can’t wait for it to start again.

TerrapinStation · 15/05/2020 16:09

the rest of us plebs will continue to follow the 2m rule in isolation

Do you not know that millions of people who you call plebs have worked throughout lockdown, and huge numbers of them unable to keep 2m apart.

A regularly tested footballer is of no risk to the rest of us and will have no impact on when restrictions are lifted.

Iknitknickknacks · 15/05/2020 16:28

Terrapin

Yes - well aware millions have been working. How do you think the virus is spreading?

Antibles · 15/05/2020 16:48

They're going to have to stop their disgusting spitting. It couldn't be more anti-social right now. One silver lining of coronavirus could be that this gross habit is stamped out.

MrsWhites · 15/05/2020 16:56

Can't men do without football for a few months FFS?

You do realise this is 2020 don’t you? Woman are allowed to watch and even play football nowadays you know!

Utterlydespairing · 15/05/2020 16:56

The German league starts this weekend. Can’t wait

Viviennemary · 15/05/2020 16:57

It's pathetic and shouldn't be allowed. Money grabbers.

AgeLikeWine · 15/05/2020 16:59

Sod it I'm off visiting - obviously there's organisations altering the rules to suit themselves. All things being equal - I will do the same.

So you have been tested within the last few days and found to be covid negative then? Because all the players, club staff, officials etc etc will be tested regularly before being allowed to participate

avroroad · 15/05/2020 17:06

Money talks - the rest of us plebs will continue to follow the 2m rule in isolation.

Erm, lots of people have been working through this without following the 2m rule because it's not possible. Yes, money does talk. That's what business is about, for the thousands of people who are employed as an extension of that football match.

What a weird post. As if you have no idea that people have been working Hmm

Wtfdidwedo · 15/05/2020 17:06

I'm so excited for the Bundesliga tomorrow.

avroroad · 15/05/2020 17:07

Sod it I'm off visiting - obviously there's organisations altering the rules to suit themselves. All things being equal - I will do the same.

All things wouldn't be equal though. Visiting is not the same as going to work Confused

MrsWhites · 15/05/2020 17:25

It’s completely different to going visiting!
The government guidelines say that if you cannot work from home you should return to work. If you cannot social distance in the work place, other measures should be implemented, which is exactly what teams are doing, increasing hygiene, training in small groups and weekly testing.

Iknitknickknacks · 15/05/2020 17:54

Agelikewine

As I said money talks - paying for tests

There are a finite number of tests - shouldn't they be available to all if they're available to footballers?

avroroad · 15/05/2020 18:00

@Iknitknickknacks

Interesting how you have totally ignored the responses to your more ridiculous comments.

Iknitknickknacks · 15/05/2020 18:02

Mrswhites

So I can go to work for 8 hrs observing 2m distance with people who I don't know where they've been?

I can queue for an hour getting essentials in a sea of people who merrily pass the time of day chatting and who have no knowledge of what 2m is?

But I can't see people who I know?

Doesn't make any sense so can't be right.

cheeseycracker · 15/05/2020 18:02

the footballers themselves can't lose a season in which to shine

Rolls eyes.

Trust me when I say there aren't very many footballers who are happy to go back.

And how about this.... some clubs are saying to the players for away games they have to get themselves there, the morning of the match. There are no club coaches allowed to drive them all, no hotels available after a long journey OR places that they can eat. Let's say for example Newcastle players have to leave their house at 5am to drive all the way to Brighton and once they get there they can't even get a proper pre match meal???
It's not good to drive all those hours and then play a full match PLAYERS DONT WANT TO GO BACK YET.

Iknitknickknacks · 15/05/2020 18:07

avroroad

What difference does it make?

2m distance from a colleague is the same as 2m distance from anyone else.

Or are you saying football is work? Which is the most ridiculous thing ever.
