Some people want the death rate to go back up

Rosebel · 13/05/2020 22:51

Well looks like lockdown has ended. Went to the doctors today and saw 3 groups of teenagers together at least 5 per group and obviously no social distancing. Two men chatting over a gate, again no distance and next door having their grandchildren over.
It's exactly what I knew would happen. Measures relax slightly and people take the piss. I know people will say it's none of my business but actually it is.
First it's everyone's business because this is the reason we can't control the virus.
Secondly I had to go to the doctors for my health but at the same time deal with idiots who just don't care about putting others at risk.
If this is happening everywhere as I suspect don't worry about shops reopening or children going back to school as the death rate will shoot up again and we'll be back in lockdown.
Would love to know why people are so selfish, stupid and want to stay in lockdown forever?

We were told we were relaxing the lockdown taking baby steps. I don’t feel we are. It’s moving too fast. Telling people they can drive wherever they like to exercise is unnecessary at the moment. It could have waited a while while we saw the effect of other measures. I can quite understand why people feel the lockdown is over although I don’t flout the rules myself and wish others wouldn’t. Wouldn’t surprise me if the numbers of people with the virus increase and the government fudge the figures so they don’t have to take any backward steps. Opening schools is a mistake before we see how we do with other measures relaxed. Before anyone tells me children don’t suffer badly from the virus there are plenty of adults working in schools. Additionally why is it sensible to wear face coverings in confined spaces like shops and on public transport but not in classrooms.

Rhodri · 14/05/2020 00:55

Everyone has just thought: If I’m allowed to drive anywhere for exercise and go to the shops and DC can go to school, so we are 2m from random people - then why can’t I be 2m from my family? And they’ve all gone round to visit their mums.

Rosebel · 14/05/2020 00:57

Surely the point of easing restrictions gradually was to make sure the NHS didn't get overwhelmed though. If people do what they want surely the hospitals will get flooded again.
Yes I can keep my distance but the more the rules are broken the more risk there is of me (\or anyone else) catching it. I know it's not going away but doesn't mean we have to actively try and infect people.

@sweetkitty don't speak for all of Scotland it certainly isn't like that where I live. Roads are empty and people are staying at home.

Smellbellina · 14/05/2020 01:08

Social distancing is still very much in evidence where I live, even with garden centres opening etc.

SquashedSpring · 14/05/2020 01:18

It was the driving wherever you want in the country for exercise that I didn't get. Almost as if they wanted to make sure the disease reached all those areas that haven't been affected as badly.

Bowerbird5 · 14/05/2020 01:23

My neighbour stands out and claps for the key Workers and has NHS rainbows in her windows and visits her friend nearly every day. Friend also doing it. They have been around for drinks in the garden. Really pees me off.

SpokeTooSoon · 14/05/2020 01:51

People have the attitude of it will never happen to them

They are largely correct.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 02:12

SpokeTooSoon

So true 😂😂

Redolent · 14/05/2020 02:44

@SpokeTooSoon

Username checks out.

We’re definitely heading for a spike in 2-3 weeks, coupled with the fact that lockdown was eased too soon anyway. This is why experts like Anthony Costello reckon we could have 6+ waves of the virus.

It could be worse...if you’re in Texas, where restaurants reopened at the start of May and are seeing long packed queues with no social distancing in sight. They’re now seeing 1000+ new cases a day. Reassuring to see that our national stupidity has been surpassed.

ToffeeYoghurt · 14/05/2020 02:59

The so called 'doom merchants' want the opposite of a high death rate. We're doing what we've been doing all along. Warning. In the vain hope that it will be heeded so that we can avoid many more deaths, a delayed return to some kind of normality, and slower economic recovery.

The government is prolonging the agony. The past few months they could (and should) have done what other countries did. Got PPE, drugs, and tests. Oh and checks and quarantine at our airports. That's our way out before a vaccine.

Now, we either finally get on with sorting that or this goes on and on and on. Wave after wave, lockdown after lockdown, avoidable deaths, economic disruption.

It doesn't have to be like this. But we need to actually get on with doing something.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 03:14

Texas has just over a 1000 deaths. If they end up with loads of new cases, the majority will have a mild illness and they managed to get their liberty back.

One thing about countries threatening to return to lockdown - it makes people more inclined to break rules. If we’re waiting for the R rate to go down when it’s logically going to go up, we will keep going backwards.

So a lot of people will think, quick, let’s see people before they stop us again.

The original aim was to sort out NHS capacity. It’s gone way beyond that.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 03:16

Remember when the plan was to take bites out of the curve? That’s reasonable. I don’t think many people mind queuing for a shop because of that. But not see close ones properly and trash the economy - not acceptable.

Aridane · 14/05/2020 03:27

I'm in Scotland and nothing has changed here, went my 2 walks today, everyone keeping out your road, no gangs of kids out.

Ditto where I am (London) - including the buses

DippyAvocado · 14/05/2020 03:33

The quickest way to get it over with is actually to go out and let the disease spread until everyone has had it.

Er, no. That is the quickest way to end up with a non-functioning healthcare system.

IMO, public use of the term "herd immunity" by Patrick Vallance at a government briefing at the beginning of this crisis will be a major contributary factor to why the UK has suffered so badly in the pandemic. To hear people still rolling it out now, after the government have said lied it was never their policy and even Patrick Vallance himself has publicly admitted it was a mistake, goes to show that a bad policy cannot be undone. Who knows how many people haven't been bothering with social distancing because they actually think it's a good idea to catch the virus.

We would have done better to have a short (3 week or so) total shutdown earlier on to really get a grip on it, then be able to relax lockdown gradually as we built up measures to contain localised outbreaks through testing and tracking. Instead we got a loose lockdown that's going to end up going on much longer, or being turned on and off, which will likely end up with more serious health and economic consequences than if we had just bitten the bullet and shut everything down briefly. There is already concern that the death rate is not falling as quickly as they had expected.

ToffeeYoghurt · 14/05/2020 03:40

DippyAvocado I agree.
Short-term pain, long-term gain.

BritWifeinUSA · 14/05/2020 04:02

@Redolent Texas has a population of around 39 million, so a little under half the population of the UK. Even 1500 cases a day puts TX on a par with a UK when you adjust the figures for population size. And that’s with restaurants, etc open. So how much good is social distancing, shutting down the economy really doing if places that are open have a similar number of cases?

PollyPelargonium52 · 14/05/2020 04:49

My ds is 15 and when he found out that they were allowed to meet somebody from another household he was shaking his head at how ludicrous it is as a measure to believe that young people will meet up carefully like this. Although he did not go out yesterday and does not go out much and is quite careful.

This also applies to adults many adults will just not be careful and will flout the rules from day one. To think somebody is going to see their mum in the morning and their dad in the afternoon is plain daft.

Boris is way off in his estimation of the public if he thinks all the public is going to behave rationally and considerate.

I just hope it is a tiny minority that act stupid and incosiderate.

Plump82 · 14/05/2020 05:00

I'm in Scotland. About a week before Boris' BIG announcement I did feel it was getting slightly busier on the trains but not too much. Then after Nicolas announcement it was like a switch and Glasgow is like a ghoaldy town again. Yesterday I was the only one in Queen Street station. Same train time as usual. Its was like that right at the beginning of all this. I think Scotland are listening to her.

HelloToMyKitty · 14/05/2020 05:11

They’ve ramped up testing but I do believe that god percentage of positive results has actually gone down. Also, new cases do not matter as much as new hospitalizations (especially as the health system in the US is underused at the moment) which have gone down as well.

Georgia has been open for weeks without a problem but headlines were shrieking about all the new deaths that were gonna happen. It didn’t....

Plump82 · 14/05/2020 05:25

*ghost not ghoaldy. Not sure what that is!

Pleasebeafleabite · 14/05/2020 05:55

But the Hospitals weren’t flooded were they?

Reginabambina · 14/05/2020 05:56

You mean infection rate. Bar the extinction rebellion types I doubt anyone wants increased infection rates, they just want to get back to living their lives.

Utterlydespairing · 14/05/2020 06:02

We can’t stay locked down forever despite what many Mumsnetters want. The same posters will be complaining when their taxes go up and we have a deep recession

Peggysgettingcrazy · 14/05/2020 06:06

Hang on.....the announcement was on Sunday.

Whose fault it is, lots of 'idiots' scrapped socal distancing for VE day celebrations?Yes plenty of people, celebrated in a social distancing way and kept to it.

But lots of people didnt. There was no announcement then. Just a poster someone (unknown) made for Facebook, that wasn't from anyone official. Some councils shared it. But they arent the government.

I live in an area where there were lots of videos of the social distancing being thrown out of the window, Friday night, which also went into Saturday and Sunday.

People not staying away from eachother in the supermarket etc. It was awful all weekend.

Again, the government didn't tell anyone they could go out in groups. Or chat to neighbours without social distancing.

If people are taking stupid risks, thats on them. Plenty were taking the risks before the announcement on Sunday.
