Hi, I am looking for some decent facemasks. There seems to be quite a few out there but not good quality. I would like my family to have some sort or barrier and one that’s washable. Big ask I know! Please point me in the right direct!
I bought some local cotton ones and they didn’t last five mins

Omg

Thighmageddon · 13/05/2020 15:09

The first of my cotton ones I ordered from Etsy has arrived.

It's really well made.

ADreamOfGood · 13/05/2020 15:11

@portocristo how do their masks kill the virus? Soap/washing breaks down the virus, so any washable mask is one that can be cleansed.

Lola1975 · 13/05/2020 15:14

Great! Thank you will try them!

portocristo evidence for that extremely bold claim?

ADreamOfGood · 13/05/2020 15:37

portocristo antimicrobial fabrics to kill microbes, but not "on contact", rather over time (at least ten minutes, usually longer).
The chemical agents used in these fabrics are quite hazardous, and whilst they may be approved for bodily use (e.g. sports wear, gowns for morticians etc) I don't think people should be breathing in or ingesting directly triclosan chitosan etc which are banned in some countries, though not UK, due to health concerns.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 13/05/2020 15:37

The mask is Anti-Microbial and physically destroys corona virus on impact .

LOL

ADreamOfGood · 13/05/2020 15:41

And of course many antimicrobial fabrics merely retard the further growth of microbes, not kill them.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 13/05/2020 15:41

I have just ordered from here:

bespoke-facemasks.com

It is a British rowing kit manufacturer who has converted to making masks as no one is currently rowing!

Not medical grade (but general public advised to leave those for frontline workers anyway) machine washable at 60 degrees.

I have gotten a mask and a snood-think snood might be easier to wear now but as it gets hotter out may need mask then.

BruceAndNosh · 13/05/2020 15:44

If there is a mask that destroys the virus on contact I'd expect the inventor to be fending off Government contracts to supply the NHS for ICU use.
Not selling them on eBay for people to wear round Tesco

PestymcPestFace · 13/05/2020 15:44

Put your washable fabric face coverings in a wash bag or a pillow case when you wash them. It will stop the ties coming out and make them last longer.

Astrid84 · 13/05/2020 15:50

bespoke-facemasks.com this company isn't even declared on companies house so i'd be very wary on ordering from them. A scarf would work just as well

They are Stitch Rowing

I have been a customer with them for many years while my DC rowed. They are a business based in Malvern so supporting a British business.

CantStandMeow · 13/05/2020 16:01

How many layers of thickness are recommended for day to day use? I'm seeing 3 layers up to 7 layers of cotton when I look.

Hagisonthehill · 13/05/2020 16:01

Are people going to be wearing goggles as well since the eyes are another entry point for the virus?

Hagisonthehill · 13/05/2020 16:03

Apparently layers of silk is good, also layers of fine cotton, the higher the tread count the better. This way you need less layers which will make breathing through it in summer more bearable.

Thighmageddon · 13/05/2020 16:04

The masks are to protect others not the wearer.

Not sure my eyes have ever propelled liquid into the air the same way my sneezing or coughing could.

miatheminx · 13/05/2020 16:05

The only mask that will protect the wearer is either an FFP2 or FFP3 - anything else about catching droplets to protect other people. Even then it's minimal.
