Thank goodness.

So you think I should get a job where I have no experience in for a couple of months and then go back to my job just because it annoys you that I'm sat at home .

It’s more that there may be a shake up when businesses have to contribute and decide not to continue the scheme. Zero or 20% top up may be ok but more not. It may not be the case but if there are many hitting the job hunting at the same time it will be harder not easier.

MrsG010814 · 12/05/2020 14:34

A lot of furloughed can't actually work whilst on leave as their contract prohibits it. They can't do anything else because they are not permitted.

vanillandhoney · 12/05/2020 14:34

The furloughed need to be doing some sort of work, rather than having one long sunny 80% holiday I'll be paying eyewatering taxes on for the next 50 years.

What work is it that you want them to do? People keep saying this but they're not giving any sensible solutions.

There is no childcare available to anyone who isn't a keyworker, so what work are these people supposed to do, exactly? Out of idle interest I looked on a local jobseekers site to see what work was available in my area.

Two delivery driving jobs.
One 9hr contract to work in co-op.

Then a couple of hospital jobs requiring degrees and years of medical training.

That's it. That's all there is within 20 miles of here. Nobody is hiring.

Pomegranatepompom · 12/05/2020 14:35

Yes, people who have continued to work as normal )or in worse circumstances) and who haven’t benefited from from government schemes are going to be very angry about the increased taxes.
Job security isn’t guaranteed for anyone.
It’s all so desperate.

jasjas1973 · 12/05/2020 14:35

This is how stupid and anti business people are on MN

Businesses haven’t had a a bloody wage holiday. They’ve been closed down. I don’t why people on furlough are not shitting them self’s worrying about their jobs

I think you should watch your tone lol !

If they are closed down, then employees will be made redundant!
My company carried on trading, at a lower level, so furloughed some staff.
That is what many businesses have done, so they have kept the expertise ready for any up turn but had wages paid by the state, sounds like a wages holiday to me.

Its not stupid or anti business.

imsooverthisdrama · 12/05/2020 14:35

Yes @Spillinteas and those are most of the jobs that a furloughed because they cant open .
We will need chefs one day hopefully soon or are we all going to carry on cooking at home forever.?

Joan0fSarc · 12/05/2020 14:35

This us vs them saddens me greatly

Me too. It's so disheartening that even at a time like this people still carry on this way. Those on furlough are the new scroungers with a wide screen telly.

Some people might find they feel less stressed and knackered if they only stopped concerning themselves so much with other people's business and getting so tied up in knots over it.

Government should just force the majority in to some sort of national service on a rota and get them disinfecting streets, public transport and so on. Delivering food to the working, befriending the isolated.

Where would the resources come from to organise and co-ordinate this? There were hundreds of thousands of people offering to volunteer for the NHS a few weeks ago and many were never contacted.

If the non-furloughed are being overworked, that's the fault of their employers not the furloughed.

This sort of thread seems to have replaced the benefit bashing ones. It's shameful that people are turning on each other like this.

BirdieFriendReturns · 12/05/2020 14:36

I imagine a lot of people will have no job to return to.

Exactly.

Marylou2 · 12/05/2020 14:36

Please share this information then , I can assure you that me and my colleagues are paying tax , insurance and pension so are millions of others .

I don't need to share it. It's basic economics 101. A small percentage of people pay a large majority of tax receipts. Most people don't cover the amount that's spent on them. Nearly every developed country operates this system. I agree with it completely but I'm always surprised at the the average person's lack of financial awareness.

felineflutter · 12/05/2020 14:36

Erm... there are many Care Worker jobs @vanillanandhoney

Devlesko · 12/05/2020 14:37

I saw a job the other day that was wfh, brilliant for me, but those furloughed couldn't apply.
I know I have no work to go back to, so am looking. Although no way will I woh, atm.
I understand that you shouldn't be paid twice but surely you could pay it back/ stop claiming furlough.

justasking111 · 12/05/2020 14:37

I read in Spain the hospitality industry has been told to re-open, why, whose coming?

vanillandhoney · 12/05/2020 14:37

@felineflutter it depends on where you live. There's no care worker jobs going within 20 miles of where I am.

Joan0fSarc · 12/05/2020 14:37

People could volunteer for the track and trace work which is home based.

squiglet111 · 12/05/2020 14:37

For the companies that are furlonging some and keeping others working doing several people's jobs, surely they should switch things around so people now working can be furloughed and the others can go back to work?

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 12/05/2020 14:38

*@avroroad"

"Boris telling people to go to work if they can and Rishi extending their furlough scheme until October? Doesn't exactly I still any confidence in the Government, which is what people need right now. Do they even talk to each other?"
The two things are not mutually exclusive. Why would you think one would preclude the other?

Boris Johnson confirmed that (apart from the shops & companies who have been told they mustn't work) you should wfh if you can but, if you cannot, you should go to work. Furloughed workers should, in general, only be furloughed to keep them on the companies' books rather than being made redundant. This is generally being done where there is not enough work to retain the staff in the current circumstances.

It doesn't instil confidence in the Govt? Really? I think many furloughed staff are very happy right now.

imsooverthisdrama · 12/05/2020 14:39

@Marylou2 you are going onto a completely different subject now , those that are furloughed are paying tax etc.

vanillandhoney · 12/05/2020 14:39

If the non-furloughed are being overworked, that's the fault of their employers not the furloughed.

Precisely. People are angry at the wrong people. If you are now doing the work of 2-3 people that's not your co-workers fault!

ScarfLadysBag · 12/05/2020 14:39

Really? Are there oodles of care worker jobs for people with zero previous experience? Really? You want people who don't want to be there and have no experience in caring for elderly people to work in care homes, which are becoming the one place Covid is still thriving?

I can see no way in which this will go wrong.

I've just had a look and can see no care worker jobs around here requiring zero previous experience. I've just had a look and while there are some care vacancies, they variously require a year of experience in care homes, selected health and safety certifications, and registered with certain organisations.

vanillandhoney · 12/05/2020 14:40

A lot of people have been furloughed for childcare reasons, though. So until schools re-open, they can't go back to work.

userxx · 12/05/2020 14:41

@Joan0fSarc Glad your husband is getting paid and you're alright but do you understand the implications of this financial disaster? We will be paying this for decades to come. Looking at the next 4 months and being relieved is very short sighted.

Stop being so logical Grin
