Have I imagined that we were getting clarification on everything at 2pm today?

@Fortyfifty

He said mainly construction and manufacturing at the moment .

I would think things like dentists and hairdressers would find it pretty hard to observe the 2m rule .

As in other countries they will only come back if the r comes right down .

We are only minimising risk not eliminating it .

Boris said that if you can’t work from home and you can’t get child care at the moment employers must take that into account

Must take that into account.

Except this is NOT backed up in law.

And if the alternative is unpaid leave or Statutory Sick Pay (as your employer refuses to furlough you or you furlough isn't available) where does that leave you (remembering that it looks like furlough is likely to be rolled back to 60% of pay), where does that leave you?

Jobless? Homeless? Bankrupt? Or more than one?

Not being backed up in law is a minor detail. But the only one that matters.

@Somerville

Sorry I don’t agree . I think it’s quite clear that not much has changed for the moment and the planned changes will only proceed if the figures are weighing guidelines .

Employers are getting constant advice that the public don’t see and hopefully at least this might get some more people in some families back at work if they can .

SusieOwl4 · 11/05/2020 16:55

Within guidelines

SusieOwl4 · 11/05/2020 16:56

@RedToothBrush

But perhaps it is ? Could be classed as discrimination?

TwentyViginti · 11/05/2020 17:03

Just heard. News conference at 7pm.

Are they?

Have you been under a rock for the past few days? There have been threads on here, and it's all over my FB - people jumping at the first mention of not having to stay at home, and having parties or moving to their second homes, and employers putting pressure on staff for an immediate return to work.
My family alone were directly affected in 2 ways - our cleaner offered to come back today (before she realised the rules don't change until Wednesday, and before I could work out how to enable social distancing while she cleans, with a toddler running around and 3 teenagers doing remote schooling in separate downstairs rooms) and my 15 yr old got invited to a party in a barn last night to celebrate end of lockdown Hmm (of course didn't go, but plenty of others did judging by the photos on his social media).
Getting more people safely back in work and more isolated people with human contact are laudable aims that I support but they won't happen if R-rate rises because people rush to resume work unsafely because needing to wait for details wasn't clear. Or because they're wee dickheads desperate for any excuse and confident that the police are less able to enforce the rules.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2020 17:25

Not if they have a blanket policy of it for all parents, and the problem you have is how do you enforce that? Though the courts which might take years, by which time you've already been forced to quit work...

Xenia · 11/05/2020 17:40

I owildn't like to be an employer or in HR at the moment - you are going to need the wisdom of Solomon to decide who can stay home, who will get furlough, who will get sick pay, who will be made redundant - is it 03 stone Jimmy who is at risk or Jane whose nursey is closed and has a husband who never does a second of childcare because he is utterly sexist?

kwest · 11/05/2020 21:46

DH is new self employed hairdresser, so not allowed to work and it’ll be a total of over 3 months with no work and no wages or financial help. 4th July at earliest for him.
It’s almost as if no thought was given right at the very beginning of the lockdown as to how we were going to come out of lockdown. It all feels as though it’s being made up each day - clear as mud and not very clearly thought out at all.

Xenia · 11/05/2020 21:49

It might be worth the hairdresser trying to get at least a month of work in a supermarket just to tide things over.
