Why is everyone rushing back to work this morning?

It's being reported London buses are rammed when they've been relatively quiet until now.
Why have people rushed back yo work today regardless of the guidelines?

56% of UK jobs can't be done from home.

CorianderLord · 11/05/2020 10:34

Not sure what people thing others in London are supposed to do? I don't own a car, having looked at maps it would take me an hour to cycle to work (if I owned a bike) and two hours eight minutes to walk to work...

I start work at 7am, you're having a laugh if you think I'm going to set off hiking at 5am

DateandTime · 11/05/2020 10:35

Haha Judy. Don't know about you but I don't look at my work phone between 7pm Sunday and 8am Monday, which is entirely in line with company policy, we are instructed not to.

To mobilise a workforce and to do so ensuring SD is in place takes more than a few texts

multivac · 11/05/2020 10:35

No he said very clearly last night 'from tomorrow' aka Monday

He really didn't. I know, I know - I 'heard' it too; but I didn't. What I heard was a really clear implication, set up by following "We NOW need to stress that anyone who can’t work from home, for instance those in construction or manufacturing, should be actively encouraged to go to work..." with, after a few more paragraphs "AND FROM THIS WEDNESDAY, we want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise."

I am starting to suspect this was a deliberate attempt by govt. advisers to set up a strawman for the Opposition and the press.

JudyCoolibar · 11/05/2020 10:37

No it's not "mandatory of you need the money". Do you think people have been staying home for the fun of it?

Money is kind of mandatory if you want to eat and have a roof over your head.

JudyCoolibar · 11/05/2020 10:38

Dateandtime, unsurprisingly most people don't have separate work phones.

FrippEnos · 11/05/2020 10:39

It's clear hat England are going for herd immunity.

The English government. What some/most of the people want seems to be largely irrelevant.

lifestooshort123 · 11/05/2020 10:40

Can I ask a question? Why are so many people absolutely outraged about having to return to work weeks after lockdown was initiated?
You've got it in one. And it might surprise some people that London is not the only workplace in the UK. Oh, and if you want to wear a mask on your daily commute or at work you don't need to wait for permission. FHS.

fascinated · 11/05/2020 10:40

But people who can’t wfh should have been working all along unless specifically told not to eg pubs.

People just don't want to go to work, that's the problem. They want to stay at home on 80% pay forever

Utter complete bollocks! Everyone I know who has been furloughed, myself included, are dying to get back to work, if we even have jobs after this 🙄

thunderthighsohwoe · 11/05/2020 10:45

If an employer states that you must be in work, then you must be in work. Am I missing something? Most people need jobs to pay their bills.

bluebell34567 · 11/05/2020 10:47

it isnt well planned, which they could do. it is as if 'lets do this and wait and see what happens'.

ivykaty44 · 11/05/2020 10:49

Unfortunately it is just about social distancing, places such as factories, call centres will be able to space put their staff by 2 meters, but this won't work as there will be many people in the same room for several hours - if one person is infected then the virus can still spread to others in the location - this is the science part and what they researchers have found so far..

funerals, weddings, parties and work places are the easiest places to catch the virus

www.erinbromage.com/post/the-risks-know-them-avoid-them?fbclid=IwAR1K7kN8EwcQVI3kxw92Ggx6R2ezuKWpF4Qn5IDJiIq3xjmuVa-dHTYN4q4

passing through a supermarket you are less likely to catch the virus in this way - but working inside a supermarket puts you more at risk.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/05/2020 10:50

Well just have to wait a while longer. There are 50 pages of advice yet to come.

Nothing has changed yet...

howells · 11/05/2020 10:54

They wanted to put a proper testing regime in place but they need the number of cases to drop further for that to happen (it’s just not feasible with so many cases and a virus with a longish incubation period and so many asymptotic carriers...they discovered this very early on). In the meantime people started breaking lockdown socially anyway so reducing the chance of us getting to that point.

Meanwhile, we can’t continue to fund the country when economic activity is so reduced. This virus isn’t going away anytime soon- it could be years before we have effective treatments and/or a vaccine. So we have to explore ways of getting the country back to work whilst minimising risk. All governments have the same issues to resolve. Until they try to get things moving again, they won’t know what will happen (eg how many people can actually practically switch to walking or cycling, how much capacity do they need in the public transport system to allow people to get around safely). We’ve never been in this situation before- we can’t expect the government to know all the answers all the time.

Pedallleur · 11/05/2020 10:54

Exactly! Nothing has changed, the distance rules still apply, there is limited transport so are we going to get a second wave? None of the other UK countries are changing anything. Going to look stupid if we have another 1000 a day dying because of misinformation

namechangenumber2 · 11/05/2020 10:55

I think we shouldn't have had this 24 hour gap between his announcement and the parliamentary announcement today.

SnoozyLou · 11/05/2020 10:55

**So employers are going against what Boris said?
How sad. Break the rules or lose your job at a time when everyone knows jobs will be going and new ones hard to find.

Not sure what you were listening to, but he said last night if you can’t work from home, you’ll have to go to work, but not to use public transport, but except if you have to, i.e. do what you will but (a) the government won’t be paying for you to staying at home for much longer and (b) if you contract Covid, that’s your fault. I told you to be “alert”.

bluebell34567 · 11/05/2020 10:57

there should be more buses, trains running so that the social distancing can be applied.

The80sweregreat · 11/05/2020 10:58

A few things have already being put in place. The guy on bbc breakfast news who runs a golf club was already ' on it' but they can be as it's a private place and everyone knows each other. They will probably supply masks and gloves , hand sanitizer and letting people go round in family pairs will be easy to ' police' !
Not so easy in a busy shop but I bet they have already got some kind of guidelines already.
I'm uneasy about staff safety , but it's a balancing act between lives and the economy moving on in order to keep things like the nhs and public sector jobs. So difficult to achieve and some employers just
don't care either which isn't helping.

JudyCoolibar · 11/05/2020 10:59

Why are so many people absolutely outraged about having to return to work weeks after lockdown was initiated

I haven't been seeing reluctance to get back to work. There is however an understandable worry about getting back to work when it means massively exposing your own and others' risk levels by travelling on public transport, or when your children can't go to school and there are no childminding possibilities available.

oldiewelshie · 11/05/2020 11:02

The furloughed seem to be replacing benefit claimants as a target of hate on this thread. Come on you lazy skivers, back to work with you!

Bluewarbler27 · 11/05/2020 11:03

The advice was always only go out to work if you can’t work from home. Nothings really changed there.
