It's being reported London buses are rammed when they've been relatively quiet until now.
Why have people rushed back yo work today regardless of the guidelines?

Let's hope that works @Sandybval since bus drivers are in the most at risk category.

"Men in low-skilled jobs are almost four times more likely to die from coronavirus than professionals, with 21.4 deaths per 100,000 people, compared with 5.6 among white-collar male workers."

"Security guards, care workers, construction workers, plant operatives, cleaners, taxi drivers, bus drivers, chefs and retail workers are all at a greater risk of dying, according to the analysis of Covid-19 fatalities in England and Wales up to 20 April from the Office for National Statistics"

@Derbygerbil, I don't doubt it.

Chillipeanuts · 11/05/2020 19:38

Startling statistics on radio this morning, that “unskilled” men are much more likely to die
from Covid19.
They cited various examples and I was amazed to hear “bus drivers”. Anyone who’s been driven around central London on a bus will know that it’s far from unskilled. Avoiding cyclists, pedestrians, black taxis and ubers cutting them up etc. The driver has to be totally on the ball and a skilled driver, Id say.

I had hoped our sudden realisation that what a lot of us had hitherto thought of as “unskilled” jobs, mostly because they were low waged so we made assumptions, were in fact absolutely key to all of our lives had put paid to such dismissive descriptions.

The80sweregreat · 11/05/2020 20:05

Driving a bus is a skill set not many could do!
Ditto trains.

foggybits · 11/05/2020 20:08

I agree @Chillipeanuts who decided what jobs are un skilled or low skilled. I driven a van through London, way harder & more stressful than my day job which involves playing with numbers on excel.

cyclingmad · 11/05/2020 20:31

I was fortunate enough to get to drive a bus around a depot once and I have huge admiration for them because it is far from easy! How they do it on those tight roads and corners in london with ease is pretty much amazing not to mention constantly being mindful of cyclists and motorbikes!

OP here, only just had a chance to get back and read. I wasn't very clear in my original post but I wasn't criticising people going back per se but that I thought Boris had said to go back on Wednesday, not today.

It seems I'm in the minority thinking this, although some others did say they thought the same.

And tobthisectgat havexnarked down as a heartless bitch with no bills to pay or livingbitvup on myv80% furlough, I'm actually unemployed. I didn't get Furloughed. My job in aviation webtc11th March. Im getting by because i did some overtime tgat was in my last paypacket on March 31st and because 2 of my 4 kids have come home to live and helping out financially. I'm desperately searching for a new job to avoid having to claim benefits if I can.

Like I said, I wasn't criticising the going back to work just that I'd mistakenly interpreted the message to return to work on Wednesday. Sorry to those I obviously offended. Was not my intention.

@Candyflosscookie WTF who are you to say you "thought I was odd before"? Am I missing something, you must know me then? There's nothing I've said on this thread that hasn't been said by other people on here so less of the personal attacks.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 08:32

@foggy, sorry I put my phone away in the evenings or I'd have replied sooner.

I think I more meant that I don't care about TFL as I live out here in NotLondon. Rurally enough that a car or public transport is essential, walking or cycling to work is impossible for the vast majority of people, given the distances involved and the poor state of the roads.

Our public transport, shite as it usually is, has found ways to keep essential staff at work, running a service that just about meets the needs of it's customer base and is talking to them. It won't catch up immediately but have already said they are working on increasing buses around the peak usage hours, including the additional late night hospital runs.

It isn't perfect. But they have screens, cashless payments, and they even wave the Twirlies through without issue. Despite being desperately underfunded, understaffed and, in normal circumstances, under utilised, it has made a big difference to many of it's more remote customers.

Why TFL haven't found similar work rounds will be specific to them and may not apply to any other transport network. In short I think I am saying that London issues are often London issues and don't always translate to more rural settings.
