Why is everyone rushing back to work this morning?

It's being reported London buses are rammed when they've been relatively quiet until now.
Why have people rushed back yo work today regardless of the guidelines?

Because their employers have told them to come in now and people need to work to pay their bills? It's hardly rocket science.

PrivateD00r · 11/05/2020 07:59

Urgh really? I guess a lot of employers have given staff no choice, even if they have to use public transport. Very worrying.

Nb89 · 11/05/2020 08:02

So employers are going against what Boris said?
How sad. Break the rules or lose your job at a time when everyone knows jobs will be going and new ones hard to find.

Who's breaking the rules?

Boris said that anyone who can't work from home - places like construction, manufacturing, production - can now go back to work. So that's what people are doing.

Vamoosh · 11/05/2020 08:06

Not everybody in the world works in an office and can work from home. People have bills to pay.

JorisBonson · 11/05/2020 08:08

Buses where I am have been rammed since they made them free 🙄

zafferana · 11/05/2020 08:09

The problem OP is that Boris said last night that anyone who cannot work from home should now return to work. He gave the examples of construction and manufacturing, but there are many other jobs this applies to. He also said people should avoid public transport where possible, but in a city in London where most people don't have cars and the vast majority rely on public transport, what the hell are people supposed to do? If you work on a building site in central London you're not going to drive in, are you? You take the train or bus. Ergo - the issue you mentioned. The whole thing is appallingly ill thought out and don't even get me started on how the hell many people are supposed to work without school or childcare.

FirTree31 · 11/05/2020 08:11

Boris 'actively encouraged' people who were unable to work from home in seconds like construction, manufacturing and production to go back to work today. There is the caveat of 'as long as it is safe to do so where social distancing can be practiced'.

InOutofmymind · 11/05/2020 08:13

The new slogan has a Green surround, Green means GO !

Employers will do what employers always do, look at the bottom line, your safety doesn't matter "the Govt told you to come to work , not us"

Moondust001 · 11/05/2020 08:15

And lots of people who work in offices can't work from home either! I'm fortunate that I can, but I won't even pretend that it isn't a lot more complicated and difficult to organise around. Everything takes twice as long - and I don't have kids off school or nursery around me. I also have an office at home. Most people don't have the right facilities to safely work from home. A lap top on the dining table and a dining chair are not appropriate facilities for working full days - occasionally then you can get away with it, but not for this length of time.

Working in an office is not a sinecure where everything is flexible and easy.

DressingGownofDoom · 11/05/2020 08:18

These threads make me laugh, work isn't optional, if you're told to come in then in you go.

pumpkinpie01 · 11/05/2020 08:20

My boss has done the opposite , told us not to come in despite the fact that social distancing is quite feasible . I really think he's going to furlough us until pay day to save himself money.

Sandybval · 11/05/2020 08:22

It doesn't help that public transport services in London have been cut to ridiculously low levels, partly due to staffing levels partly due to...well not sure.

Wilkolampshade · 11/05/2020 08:22

Well my DH line manager rang him last night pleased it was "all over" and they can all get back to it...There won't be any tolerance of naysayers, he'd just lose his job.
There's absolutely NO likelihood of social distancing where he works. Their proper boss definitely falls into the shielded group, but is insisting on going in anyway. It'll be a shitshow. 😳

foggybits · 11/05/2020 08:23

Lots of investment banks, law & tech firms in the city have told staff to continue to wfh. They can't tell people they have to get on public transport & expose themselves to come to work.

Nb89 · 11/05/2020 08:23

Boris said from WEDNESDAY of this week. Not today.

OP posts:
mrsrhodgilbert · 11/05/2020 08:29

He said quite clearly go to work on Monday. However I’ve just listened to Dominic Raab on radio four saying it’s Wednesday. They are saying different things, no wonder people are confused.

Dominic Raab just also said you could meet two people, in the interviewers example two parents, outside if two metres apart. He was pressed by the interviewer and he confirmed it, two people.

Sandybval · 11/05/2020 08:29

And rightly so, that's what Boris said. Only those who cannot work from home should be looking to go back in, those who can WFH should continue to do so.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 11/05/2020 08:30

I can distance at work, so I would be happy to go.

I can't distance on the bus and on the tube and I cannot always drive to work. They have to sort out that.

It's a nightmare.

Pinkyyy · 11/05/2020 08:30

I'll be honest, I watched Boris' speech in its entirety and I didn't know it was to start on Wednesday. I thought it was from today.

mynameiscalypso · 11/05/2020 08:32

Boris' speech suggested that people should go back to work from today and the restrictions on exercise etc would be lifted from Wednesday. It seems what the government actually meant was that it should all start on Wednesday but that message wasn't at all clear.

greathat · 11/05/2020 08:32

Maybe they've decided it's time for the second peak. Get that herd immunity up

Redolent · 11/05/2020 08:33

The stupidity consists of telling people to go back to work but not mandating face masks on busy public transport.

Nb89 · 11/05/2020 08:35

Bloody he'll. It's a shit show isn't it.

No one is clear about what is happening when.

OP posts:
JudyCoolibar · 11/05/2020 08:35

I really don't understand how going back to work whilst avoiding public transport is supposed to work in places like London. I haven't heard anything that suggests they are relaxing either congestion charge or parking, and if they did I suspect the place would become gridlocked.
