Why is everyone rushing back to work this morning?

It's being reported London buses are rammed when they've been relatively quiet until now.
Why have people rushed back yo work today regardless of the guidelines?

People just don't want to go to work, that's the problem. They want to stay at home on 80% pay forever. Our economy will not survive if we don't start to open businesses. People know the rules on social distancing and should be following them, whilst going to work.

I don' think that is true Pinkyyy. Many people are on a low wage and 80% of that wage is not enough to lve on. News reports are saying the roads are really busy, which suggests people are going back to work.

Pinkyyy · 11/05/2020 08:56

People won't die because of Boris' decision, it will be because of their own. They are choosing to get on a bus that's already too full to social distance. He told them to SD on public transport.

JacobReesMogadishu · 11/05/2020 08:57

Piers Morgan has had a message from the govt saying Raab got it wrong and you can only see one person/parent at a time outside.

So guess you could see your mum 9-10, send her inside and then see your dad 10-11. Because that’s going to make a difference?

oldiewelshie · 11/05/2020 08:59

It's clear hat England are going for herd immunity. I'm glad I am in Wales, but Johnson's decision will kill some of us too. The majority of the virus hotspots in Wales have been close to the border and I think those hotspots will get worse now.

Yurona · 11/05/2020 08:59

Because they have been told to by the PM?
My employer did send a mail out at 8pm yesterday to tell people to NOT come to work if not already scheduled to do so, but work from home.

oldiewelshie · 11/05/2020 08:59

that

AfterSchoolWorry · 11/05/2020 09:00

Yeah Gawdsake2020 Let them eat cake!

oldiewelshie · 11/05/2020 09:01

But if there are not enough buses/trains/tubes to allow for SD what are people to do? Not everyone can bike or walk to work.

Biscuit0110 · 11/05/2020 09:01

concerned I agree we all need to get back to work, yes 100% but a little more thought and time would have been better to ensure that people are able to get there and home safely.

I am a supporter of Boris (kill me now) but it seems very rushed on the get back to work front, and surely it would have been better to have advised people to return to work over the course of next week, using face masks, and allowed the transport systems time to ensure that numbers were being limited etc.

ukgift2016 · 11/05/2020 09:02

It is a joke, 10 minute address to the country with barely any information.

This government is a shambles. "Get to work on yer bike!"
"Fuck off Boris"

ProfessorPootle · 11/05/2020 09:03

The rules from the beginning were to work from home if possible but if not to go into work. A lot of employers decided to close and furlough staff instead. We own scaffolding and construction companies and have continued working right through, supplied staff with company cars and vans so they can travel separately. Parking costs in London are prohibitive if you don’t have offsite areas to park in, £8 per hour so lots can’t afford that so will have to use public transport. It is what it is.

Unfortunately for our sector I think this has come too late, we’re closed this week as we have one job and can’t afford to open for that. Construction now has a major shortage of materials as manufacturing closed in the UK and limited imports. The stocks of materials will take a few months to build back up, in the meantime no one can work. We’re looking at laying everyone off for a month and closing completely, have commercial mortgages to pay on offices and yard, can’t afford the extra 20% of wages anymore for those furloughed, got business rates, hire on a fleet HGV trucks and vans and no cash coming in. Applied for one of the business loans 7 weeks ago, it’s all looking good but still being processed, STILL BEING PROCESSED, that’s all we’ve heard last 6 weeks so we have to close now until it is processed. March / April we were busy but no one is paying those invoices. It’s all hitting the fan now Sad

DominaShantotto · 11/05/2020 09:05

People need to get paid - if their employer isn't going to let them be at home after the briefing what would make you happy exactly OP? For them and their families to be starving on the street (2meters away from everyone else) so that your personal interpretation of "the rules" is satisfied?

Jeez have you had an empathy and understanding bypass?

OhMyDarling · 11/05/2020 09:06

@Pinkyyy what?????!
Have a word with yourself!
Nothing in what you just said makes any sense.
Gov tells employers it’s ok to reopen
Employers demand staff go back
Staff have to get to work at a certain time
Public transport on limited service
Overcrowding is INEVITABLE on public transport running limited services- during rush hours particularly

How is it their fault?!

Social distancing cannot happen on public transport!
By your logic everyone should be taking antibac to disinfect everywhere the bus before and after they board Or better still, professional deep cleaning at every stop.

ivykaty44 · 11/05/2020 09:07

its as if the government want a second wave of the virus
uk second highest death toll nearing 70000 and wants to aim for first place

other countries look on in horror at the way this government is handling the pandemic crisis

its not hysterics its just plain simple facts

oldiewelshie · 11/05/2020 09:08

Employers need to ensure their employees are safe, though. Rushing everyone back to work without doing this first is going to cause problems further down the line.

TwilightPeace · 11/05/2020 09:09

It’s the governments decisions to allow businesses to re-open now and therefore people HAVE to go back to work as the employers won’t let them stay off any longer. How are they supposed to get to work if they don’t drive? What do you suggest?

The government needs to slow the fuck down and organise this better rather than the rushed shambles that it is inevitably going to be.
Massive second wave anyone?

Charlieiscool · 11/05/2020 09:11

Of course loads of London Underground staff are off sick. Otherwise a strike would be overdue. They never have the ethic that they are there as part of supporting Londoners’ lives. Self interest only, as usual.

BovaryX · 11/05/2020 09:12

Because no country on the planet can continue to bankroll the current situation. I imagine many people are keen to get out of the paralysis of lockdown.

More than half of Britain's adult population is now being bankrolled by the state amid warnings from the Chancellor that the furlough scheme could soon cost as much as the NHS.Analysis of official figures shows that 27 million people are being funded by the Government amid growing concern over the devastating impact inflicted on the economy by the coronavirus pandemic. The figure includes people being paid through the furlough scheme and those claiming benefits after being made unemployed because of the virus. The remainder are public sector workers and pensioners. On Monday night, Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, said the cost was "clearly not a sustainable situation" and warned that Britain must get back to work

BovaryX · 11/05/2020 09:17

Some people seem to think that the government can just continue bankrolling billions of furlough benefits. The current situation is unsustainable. But this idea that the only thing stopping the government picking up the tab for everything is entrenched in the UK. I wonder if certain sectors will refuse to return to work because the virus hasn't been eradicated?

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/05/2020 09:18

Pretty sure immediately after the briefing phones up and down the country were pinging with
‘It’s all over - get back to work’ Messages

And people are

blueheaven97 · 11/05/2020 09:19

@Pinkyyy so please can you explain what people are supposed to do if they're being required to return to work but can only get there on public transport?

(Not to mention what they're supposed to do if they have kids but no childcare - maybe everyone should take their kids to work with them and make the buses and trains even busier?)

Pinkyyy · 11/05/2020 09:20

@OhMyDarling because, quite simply, anyone who sees a full bus and steps on it is an idiot.

LarkDescending · 11/05/2020 09:21

Sadiq Khan said on the BBC this morning (08:47) that he was clear from conversations with Boris that the “back to work” message was confined: “only in construction and a couple of other open sectors can you return to work”.

Which isn’t what Boris told the nation.

Pinkyyy · 11/05/2020 09:21

@blueheaven97 they act accordingly. They travel at less busy times, wait for the next train, cycle. People can't just ignore the rules because they need to go to work. What do you think everyone else has been doing this whole time?
