How do you feel about the slogan changing to "stay alert" instead of of "stay home"?

I know there's quite a few posts this weekend about people's behaviour having already changed, so perhaps this will just mean people feel justified in their actions.

OP posts:

People are desperate to try and salvage businesses, to sort out childcare, to be able to make plans, and hopefully to avoid a second wave that results in a second complete lockdown while being able to make a living. Basic leadership at this point would be good

I absolutely agree that we need clear information on all of the above. We need reassurance we are not going to be financially abandoned if childcare / schools don't open before workplaces and if workplaces are not allowed to open.

EggysMom · 10/05/2020 09:48

Why has this been released this morning? Too many people will interpret it as a relaxation of rules TODAY and not from tomorrow (i.e. after BoJo's speech).

Well yeah, this of course is the main point.
Surely no one is living their lives based on a slogan though?

Bollss · 10/05/2020 09:50

singing I totally understand what you mean. Yes I think you're right a lot of people are seeing this as black and white all or nothing. It's not going to be that, of course. I think the government's initial message was a mistake and has terrified the population whilst also making at out that staying at home was the ultimaye answer which would solve the problem and we would be allowed back out when it's "safe". Of course that's not the case but I feel only a small amount of people actually understand this.

Bollss · 10/05/2020 09:52

Unfortunately I think a lot are. It's like a cult. The church of the NHS, if you will. People have adhered to the " stay at home" message too well if anything.

I somehow feel this new slogan won't have the same effect because it doesn't negate the terror some people are feeling. Some people are very, very scared. Unnecessarily scared.

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/05/2020 09:55

Yes I see your point TrustTheGeneGenie. People have latched on to the ‘stay home’ thing and disregarded everything else.

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 09:55

Boris will addresses from his bunker on one of saturns moons
'sorry mankind I have decided to bail out. Elon musk and I would like to wish you good luck with the virus'

Bollss · 10/05/2020 09:57

They have and I personally would like a clear message from the government that staying at home will not make this go away. Staying at home indefinitely is not the answer. It will still be here when you venture out of the door in September or 2021 or whenever people have decreed it will be safe.

SistemaAddict · 10/05/2020 09:59

*invisible obviously. Stupid phone.

brentwoodbaby · 10/05/2020 10:03

I don't know what stay alert means! Does it mean I can go and visit my mum but make sure I wash my hand regularly?

If the idea is to get people back to work then I don't understand how spending 7 hours a day with my colleagues and my toddler being in nursery all day is any 'safer' than visiting my healthy, under 60 parents or having a drink in the garden with friends.

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/05/2020 10:05

Well I guess we’ll have to see what he actually says, rather than just relying on the slogan for guidance.

Nicola Sturgeon thinks it’s a shit slogan!

Kit19 · 10/05/2020 10:05

What does stay alert actually mean?

Stay alert to what??

brentwoodbaby · 10/05/2020 10:09

Just to clarify I have two hands not just the one I referred to in my previous post Grin

Mischance · 10/05/2020 10:10

I do not want soundbites - they are an irrelevance. What I want is proper scientifically-based action.

We "might" start quarantining those coming into the country at the end of May - what the hell?!

lljkk · 10/05/2020 10:11

UK people have been shamed and terrified so much that ppl are afraid to experience even very low risk situations. The damage to our economy and children's education has only just begun and will become worse since Brits are so anxious.... unless govt can roll back a bit the shaming and fear.

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/05/2020 10:13

100% agree with that lljkk

InOutofmymind · 10/05/2020 10:13

Stay at home should remain, Stay alert is meaningless and empty.

If there are to be some lifting of restrictions, fine but keep the original message.

I really hope he will drop this new slogan, we need well thought out policies not slogans in anycase.

Kit19 · 10/05/2020 10:15

Means this apparently

Stay Alert, Control the Virus, Save Lives
Bollss · 10/05/2020 10:16

Why should stay at home remain if that's not what we're supposed to go any more?

I don't think lockdown will be lifted today by any stretch but this is the long road back to normal, no?

The hide away in fear stage is done

poshme · 10/05/2020 10:16

But @InOutofmymind we need to STOP staying at home.
Too many people have stopped working who should still be working.

We need to start going out more.

lockedown · 10/05/2020 10:25

I think it is a very weak message. Hope it's not announced. What does stay alert even mean?! I also don't understand this entire showmanship of announcing on Sunday and then leaking out to press.
The lockdown was a joke anyways. We followed the rules. But we live on the main road and people were out all the time - the streets were more crowded than ever.

Eyewhisker · 10/05/2020 10:25

I’m glad that stay at home is dropped. Hopefully an end to the threads of people scandalised by the behaviour of their neighbours.

I hope that furlough is cut to 60%. That will allow those who want to keep lockdown continued to have it extended further and also reduce the bill our children have to pay to keep their grandparents alive.

FirTree31 · 10/05/2020 10:26

@Kit19 thank you for posting that, but I feel that muddies the waters still, it doesn't make sense

OP posts:
bathsh3ba · 10/05/2020 10:26

I'm most annoyed by the fact it basically de facto means schools not back till September without him actually having the guts to come out and say so. If schools get 3 weeks notice (which annoys me in itself since no other sector does) then today was the latest for a partial reopening after half term and the next review would leave only 3 weeks of term.

mrshoho · 10/05/2020 10:30

'Stay alert' to be aware of the risk in your local area and keep yourself updated' ^If^ test, track and trace is carried out correctly (and IF our case numbers are low enough to start with) We should be able to identify hotspots as they crop up and so impose stricter lockdowns/shutdowns. As is happening across Germany. I just wonder how this will work in our large, overcrowded cities.
