School secretary saying school might reopen on Monday

I received an email on Friday with the weekly news from school. The secretary writes a brief email and then attaches the news from the HT. She has said school might be open on Monday depending on what Boris says. Considering this was published the day before it seems premature to say the least:

A DfE spokesperson said:
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has not set a date for schools reopening.
Schools will remain closed, except for children of critical workers and vulnerable children, until the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to re-open and the five tests set out by Government to beat this virus have been met.
We are also working closely with the sector as we consider how to reopen schools, nurseries and colleges and will ensure everyone has sufficient notice to plan and prepare."

The media is bad enough and now the secretary is getting hopes or fears up (depending on your stance) and adding to the confusion. Does anyone really think that boris will say tomorrow that schools will be back the next day?? If schools are back then workplaces are going to want their staff back which will create a nightmare for childcare that will need to be sorted. People need some kind of notice, not just 12 hours ffs.

Govt not go!

AlphaJura · 09/05/2020 12:33

We have heard nothing to indicate that from our HT. I suspect it's because they don't know! We get weekly updates from him and the staff and they haven't mentioned this so I doubt that could be happening. People would need notice.

Barbie222 · 09/05/2020 12:33

I'm working on Monday but it's key worker children only.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 09/05/2020 12:34

That is absolutely crazy. I’m in Ireland and am friends with a lot of teachers. No child is in school at the moment not even for key workers.
They have had meetings during the week on how to implement social distancing measures. The earliest the children will go back is September and it will be phased so not all children back together. Its looking like a long time before things will go back to normal

MarshaBradyo · 09/05/2020 12:34

How was it written?
Our schools say they don’t know but are preparing.

SistemaAddict · 09/05/2020 12:37

It's been open for key worker children for weeks so she didn't mean this. I'm not going to put the exact wording but was definitely that school might be open fully on Monday if Boris says so tomorrow.

Secretary is an idiot.

OneandTwenty · 09/05/2020 12:40

Schools have been advised they are opening after May half term! Haven't they all received the same letter? Confused

Appuskidu · 09/05/2020 12:41

Schools have been advised they are opening after May half term! Haven't they all received the same letter?

My schools hasn’t.

Are you a HT?

MarshaBradyo · 09/05/2020 12:42

Just looked at our email and it says they are looking to clarity from Johnson on Sunday.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/05/2020 12:43

That is not going to happen. Schools have to be made ready and cleaned. Children have to be prepared. Parents will have to be notified of an official start date and which children will be in on which days. I expect there will need to be a number of checks as well.

PineappleDanish · 09/05/2020 12:43

and to clarify it's the secretary's view, not the HT

Because everyone knows the secretary is making the decisions on those things.

What a numpty, Hope the head has had words over the newsletter.

BirdieFriendReturns · 09/05/2020 12:43

I’ve been told 1st June.

cantkeepawayforever · 09/05/2020 12:44

Schools have been advised they are opening after May half term! Haven't they all received the same letter?

Er....no? Because that letter - one saying they are definitely opening after May half term - doesn't exist....

Weatherwax · 09/05/2020 12:45

@oneandtwenty what letter would this be? We have had no such letter! Who was it from?

cantkeepawayforever · 09/05/2020 12:45

I’ve been told 1st June.

Who by? There is no official statement from England; Wales and Scotland have already said their schools are NOT opening 1st June; Johnson widely expected to follow suit tomorrow.

CrocodileFrock · 09/05/2020 12:46

Even if the coronavirus magically disappeared overnight, it would still take time to prepare classrooms and organise deliveries of supplies. Parents and staff would also need to be informed. There is no way that this could all happen with just a few hours notice.

BirdieFriendReturns · 09/05/2020 12:46

My mother is a HT.

imsooverthisdrama · 09/05/2020 12:46

Did she actually say it will open from Monday or did she say they will look into things from Monday?
Have you interpreted it wrong ?
She's either the most stupid person in the world to say that , because schools will not open on Monday or it's her idea of a really shit joke .
I'd look again at the wording .

ThisIsMeOrIsIt · 09/05/2020 12:48

I work in the education department of my local council and have heard nothing about schools re-opening. In fact, I usually go into different schools as part of my job but have been deployed elsewhere for the time being and am receiving training for my new area next week. No mention of it being short- or long-term.

So if there are plans to open very soon, my council appear to know nothing about it.

Topseyt · 09/05/2020 12:48

The school secretary seems to be talking out of her arse.

SpringerJS · 09/05/2020 12:48

Schools haven't been told 1st June (DH is a headteacher). They might be preparing for it just in case but there's certainly been no notification.

Spied · 09/05/2020 12:48

OP you say you are shielding and you'd love some peace.
You are aware that when the schools go back and you can have some peace that you'll be shielding no more?

OneandTwenty · 09/05/2020 12:48

oh, ok, so not all schools have received the same information, weird. Don't blame me!

pooiepooie25 · 09/05/2020 12:50

OneandTwenty are you a Head? I am a teacher in a large borough in London. The borough certainly have not had any information at all about opening, never mind on June 1.
