School secretary saying school might reopen on Monday

I received an email on Friday with the weekly news from school. The secretary writes a brief email and then attaches the news from the HT. She has said school might be open on Monday depending on what Boris says. Considering this was published the day before it seems premature to say the least:

A DfE spokesperson said:
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has not set a date for schools reopening.
Schools will remain closed, except for children of critical workers and vulnerable children, until the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to re-open and the five tests set out by Government to beat this virus have been met.
We are also working closely with the sector as we consider how to reopen schools, nurseries and colleges and will ensure everyone has sufficient notice to plan and prepare."

dfemedia.blog.gov.uk/2020/05/07/school-reopening-covid19/

The media is bad enough and now the secretary is getting hopes or fears up (depending on your stance) and adding to the confusion. Does anyone really think that boris will say tomorrow that schools will be back the next day?? If schools are back then workplaces are going to want their staff back which will create a nightmare for childcare that will need to be sorted. People need some kind of notice, not just 12 hours ffs.

@Spied yes, that's why I said the very distant future.

The woman is clearly an idiot. I'd be considering a complaint if she makes a habit of it.

Quartz2208 · 09/05/2020 13:18

Boris Johnson I think on Sunday will set out the plan for everything including when Schools start the reopening process because I think it will be the plan for the next 3 to 6 months (similar to Ireland and other countries)

Wales and Scotland have been limited in what they can say because Boris is like it or not the leader.

Rumours are that something will start to happen on June 1st but that it will be incredibly limited and will be a very slow phased process.

I am also hoping that the 4 nation approach allows for the same phased approach but taken at different stages. The 4 nations (and places within that) are not at the same stage of this outbreak and I think a timetable based on meeting certain things for each (and within that cities) makes sense based on R0 and infection levels.

From reading our newsletter they are certainly expecting some announcement and plan though

Bloomburger · 09/05/2020 13:18

A friend who works in the local government says they have to give 3 weeks notice for school opening and if they do it tomorrow it'd tie into schools opening on 1st June.

She said they might have years 6, 10 and 12 in first of all.

Headbangersandmash · 09/05/2020 13:19

I thought Boris promised a 3 week notice period ?

Our school is having a senior management meeting on Monday to discuss what Boris says on Sunday according to our newsletter. This obviously makes sense to me

MrsWombat · 09/05/2020 13:19

Speaking as a school admin assistant your school secretary is bonkers.

I've been keeping up to date with the updates from the DfE and our local council and there has been absolutely nothing about Monday. We may well have a clearer picture on Sunday of when the schools will reopen but it won't be 8.30am on Monday.....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/05/2020 13:19

I have a relative who is a TA. I know we can't know for sure but she's convinced schools are going back after half term. Apparently they've been told to prepare, she keeps telling me to keep an eye on the school website.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/05/2020 13:21

I do t think the unions are going to let 1st June happen....

dottiedodah · 09/05/2020 13:23

I would think this must be an error surely? I would have thought Notice of at least a week or two?

Feenie · 09/05/2020 13:24

My auntie's dustman's goldfish is a school pet and has been told to prepare for June 1st also.

Still doesn't mean it is happening, or that he knows more than anyone else.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/05/2020 13:25

@Feenie I'm aware of that. Hence why I said we can't know for sure. Just speculating.

callmeadoctor · 09/05/2020 13:28

Either you have misunderstood it to the secretary is now receiving a bollocking for sending out wrong information...............................

ifonly4 · 09/05/2020 13:29

Unless the school is well on the ball, they'll need time to assess which staff can come in, and deal with any health and safety requirements. Also, staff with children at other schools, will need time to plan childcare.

Our school told staff over a week ago, they wouldn't be ready before 1 June. There's no inkling it'll be sooner.

Feenie · 09/05/2020 13:30

Feenie I'm aware of that. Hence why I said we can't know for sure. Just speculating.

And thereby exacerbating the entire problem. Please don't.

GabsAlot · 09/05/2020 13:31

even worse if shes done this herself-id at least tell the ht what was said

marblesgoing · 09/05/2020 13:33

We had an email last week from h t just saying they knew nothing at all and not to speculate on what's in the media until such times they know themselves in which case we will be notified.

With the daily infection rates going up again this week I'd be very surprised if they re open in three weeks let alone 6.

returnofthemollymawks · 09/05/2020 13:33

Picture or it didn't happen.

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/05/2020 13:34

She is talking bollocks.
If she has done this, then she will be out of a job.

HipTightOnions · 09/05/2020 13:42

Our HT has also emailed to confirm he doesn’t know when school will re-open.

(Large secondary in England.)

TrentBridge · 09/05/2020 13:46

Amazing how headteachers have no idea of when schools are going to open, but various TAs and school secretaries do. It's almost like they are talking complete crap based on office gossip.

As Feenie says, speculation is absolutely pointless. Nothing to talk about until there is an official announcement... at the moment, NO-ONE who works at a school has any more of an idea than anyone else.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/05/2020 13:47

I wonder how many parents are furiously ironing the uniforms, polishing shoes and attempting to tame their kid's hair with kitchen scissors based on this nugget of bullshit.

SophieB100 · 09/05/2020 13:50

@Feenie
I'm inclined to believe the goldfish more than some of the false information posted on here recently Wink
Hope they're making him a waterproof mask - all those pesky kids sneezing in his bowl.

Feenie · 09/05/2020 13:54

Grin Grin

RubieRose · 09/05/2020 14:07

These threads Grin

So many people know 'someone' that works in a school and has been told XYZ about when schools will reopen. No they haven't! Not one Head/Teacher/TA/secretary/cleaner etc. has been told ANYTHING official at all.

Anyone that says differently is making it up.

AuditAngel · 09/05/2020 14:09

Our primary issued a newsletter on Thursday which said, despite the rumours, they had no concrete instructions from government and will watch Sundays announcements. Then, they will consider what can be put in place to open when it is safe for staff and pupils,
