No point in lockdown anymore

All my neighbours seem to think that we are in a paid staycation by the government and social distancing are out the door.
Everyone around where I live has friends and family over, are having picnics together on the grass in front of their flats, the roads are busier than ever.
It's crazy! There's no point in making this country suffer any more so better all let's just go to work and what happens happens.

People are taking advantage of the paid time off and not staying indoors. What is the point of this lockdown if people are not following it anymore?

My next door neighbors had friends and family over all this week...it's crazy.

People are complying here and have been the whole way through. But we live very near a major hospital, so the constant ambulance sirens might have made us all a lot more aware that this isn't a silly game.

AhGoGo · 07/05/2020 18:31

Look on the positive side. It's giving benefit claimants a break from all the abuse they usually take. If we have lousy weather all summer, I expect that will be the fault of furloughed employees

No worries, by summer a large chunk of those on furlough will be on benefits instead. True evil Hmm

Greenbutterlfy566 · 07/05/2020 18:32

Here in my part of wales most have NOT stuck to the rules in my street.

Builders around, Bbq's and shes a teacher.

Grandkids around.

Then the elderly in their cars multiple times a day with other households.

mrpumblechook · 07/05/2020 18:34

People are certainly complying where I live. Perhaps it's because we are in a hotspot. It will be interesting to see how things change and if places where people are apparently relaxed have a worse infection and death rate in the future .I can't get that worked up over people having picnics on the grass though. I doubt it would make much difference. The main thing that increases infection rate would be people in enclosed spaces, especially schools, pubs and restaurants etc and they are closed.

twinnywinny14 · 07/05/2020 18:34

As a key worker who cannot social distance at work I would rather the infection rate was lower than higher. I may be under 45 and have no health problems but that doesn’t mean I want to catch it and I don’t want my DH who is over 45 and has a heart condition to catch it either. Those at risk are not just those in the shielded group, there are a large number who are at high risk of complications and death but they are expected to work as normal so the lower he rate the happier I am x

Blondieg · 07/05/2020 18:35

We are taking it pretty seriously in the part of Norfolk where I live.

Kljnmw3459 · 07/05/2020 18:35

Lot of bitterness towards furloughed workers. Why is that? Jealousy?

FliesandPies · 07/05/2020 18:36

That's quite some dossier you've compiled there, Fireman Sam!

Katinski · 07/05/2020 18:36

In the midlands, my 55yr old neighbour is having a whale of a good time and lockdown just hasn't happened for him, he's out in his saloon car for a couple of hours or so, then back to change cars, then off again in his open topped car,the one with a hole in the exhaust or something, anyway it makes one hell of a noise, for ages, then back to sunbathe and zzzz on his SW facing terrace and then it's time to get his bike out and go for a ride. And that's his life in 'lockdown' for which he's getting paidAngry

YgritteSnow · 07/05/2020 18:37

It was over here in my area in London two weeks ago. Someone started a thread to talk about the fact that Londoners seemed to have decided for themselves it was over, they were roasted and the assertion aggressively denied. The thread was pulled by MN in the end, but the OP was right and took a real pasting for being so.

TheGreatWave · 07/05/2020 18:37

I am not sure that a 10minute socially distanced chat is actually worse than the people who locally stood in a half mile queue for the supermarket. The current advice permits high risk activities but not lower controllable ones.

I am showing symptoms of covid-19, it is most probable I caught it from going to the shops.

lilgreen · 07/05/2020 18:39

No changes here. East Midlands.

MintyMabel · 07/05/2020 18:39

as soon as schools shut, the kids were being carted all over the countryside, beaches etc.

Except beaches have remained largely deserted for 6 weeks. It’s almost like people are actually doing what they should be.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 07/05/2020 18:40

My neighbours either side are li ing in each others houses i know because my dog barks everytime they pass my window every 5 minutes, all but one of them are wfh or not working. I see my mum through the window (she walks past on her daily walk, kids get to say hi which jas helped them to cope i know very lucky)

My husband who was stressing about being at work before lockdown due to his health is now prepared to be back at work on monday.
The saving grace was furlough meant we still had his income not 100% so we are struggling but without it i dread to think where we would be right now.

lilgreen · 07/05/2020 18:41

@Katinski he can sunbathe on his terrace, he can go out on his bike. Do you know where he’s driving to? Could be work, for food or to help a vulnerable person.

MintyMabel · 07/05/2020 18:41

It was over here in my area in London two weeks ago.

Did you enjoy your evening out in the pub/restaurant?

Oh, of course, they’re all shut aren’t they. Could that be because lockdown is still in place and not even close to being over?

The hyperbole on this thread is ridiculous.

bellinisurge · 07/05/2020 18:41

Which beaches? I get daily photos from my old hone town and people lucky enough to include it in their daily exercise. Empty beaches. For weeks. You must be fantasising.

00deed1988 · 07/05/2020 18:43

I travel from Kent to Zone 2 London station to work in a hospital. Husband drops me to station and then train in.

I honestly can't believe the difference. Day by day the numbers out increase. Gangs of teens on the train. Passing parks and they have so many people mixing, having picnics with 10+ people. Roads are busy. We were stuck in traffic earlier. I already come into contact with enough people at work when I have no choice but now added are all these people on my train who are huddled together and then don't give a damn about anyone else and give no space for social distancing.

The advice has not changed. Yet at the beginning I had a whole train carriage to myself. A handful of cars on the road and thr parks only had joggers in them.

We haven't seen anyone for the whole time (apart from me travelling to work) but no family or friends. But I guess I know I am doing everything in my own power to keep my family safe. If these people get ill they can only blame themselves!

RedToothBrush · 07/05/2020 18:44

Except beaches have remained largely deserted for 6 weeks. It’s almost like people are actually doing what they should be.

No they are just around my next of the woods instead.

Even the police have said its been busier (already) than last May bank holiday.

Thighmageddon · 07/05/2020 18:45

It's the same here.

My furloughed arse is firmly attached to the sofa and I've seen them all out in the street, chatting and the kids playing, visitors visiting.

They'll all be out pot banging in T minus 1hr 15mins.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 07/05/2020 18:45

curiousaboutsamphire
What do you mean about a high number of Eastern European residents?

YgritteSnow · 07/05/2020 18:46

And here's another one to deny and sneer @MintyMabel Grin

People are out and about, the streets are as busy as they ever were and traffic is up again. No one is staying home. The retail and restaurant spaces are still closed of course as you point out but people are not staying home and they're not socially distancing either. They're adapting to no shops etc but they're out there buying coffees and strolling along together. Construction workers are building again. I don't care if you believe it and label it hyperbole. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not true.

Alicemovedtothecity · 07/05/2020 18:47

Of course roads are busier then they were a few weeks ago when the lockdown began. More places are open so that means more staff travelling to and from work, supermarkets are open longer so more staff needed, delivery drivers are busier so more have been hired, then there is the people who have been indoors for a few weeks and now need to venture out to collect food or prescriptions...honestly the list is endless as to the reason it’s busier! The vast majority are doing a essential journey! Grin

GinnyStrupac · 07/05/2020 18:48

The vast majority in our rural area are still following the guidelines. In all this time, I have seen only 3 adults and 5 teenagers who weren't socially distancing. The main problem we have are the entitled covidiots who think it's their right to drive or cycle a good number of miles from their local areas in the surrounding towns and cities, and from even further afield, to 'exercise' and visit our small village shops. We are dreading the next couple of days, as are our shops and mountain rescue. Please, (unless you are one of the specific few allowed to travel further for health reasons under the government guidelines), stay local and away from National Parks and the coast until it is safe for you and for us, and you will then be assured of a warm welcome.

RedToothBrush · 07/05/2020 18:52

honestly the list is endless as to the reason it’s busier!

Two weeks ago, there wasn't an ice cream van parked up on the next street over.

So yes you are right... but if you think that driving 10 miles to go for a picnic and an ice cream either count as essential trips for food or medication or exercise you are having a laugh.

Unfortunately, it seems the police are powerless to tell the ice cream van to fuck off, despite all the council notices next to the parking telling people to do this. Even the police tracing number plates and fining some hasn't been a deterrent. Its just got steadily worse.

It means now that locals have no where in walking distance to go themselves.
