No point in lockdown anymore

All my neighbours seem to think that we are in a paid staycation by the government and social distancing are out the door.
Everyone around where I live has friends and family over, are having picnics together on the grass in front of their flats, the roads are busier than ever.
It's crazy! There's no point in making this country suffer any more so better all let's just go to work and what happens happens.

People are taking advantage of the paid time off and not staying indoors. What is the point of this lockdown if people are not following it anymore?

My next door neighbors had friends and family over all this week...it's crazy.

Most folks over 60 have some underlying condition... it is a consequence of ageing

Is that really true? I must be doing incredibly well then, I don’t have any.

@alsohuman, you may be an exception, but most will have some issue of some sort. Blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity etc. Not necessarily to a massive degree, but a condition that might lessen your chances.

Many wont even know they have a condition.

VerticalHorizon · 09/05/2020 00:17

I'd ask for a show of hands about who has a condition but I get short of breath and twist a muscle when I put my hand up.

At least my alcohol consumption is minimal - I can get the same results from just standing up too quickly

@RubbishRobotFromTheDawnofTime

Your examples are simply anecdotal. Much as mine are. More importantly, Scotland has shown through polling a much greater level of confidence in Sturgeon (75% I think) than rUK has in Johnson. She is much more conservative in her messages about lockdown (and consistent and authoritative IMHO) We are politically polarised from rUK and I believe that Scots in general (obviously there are going to be pockets flouting - but tbh your examples dont seem particularly alarming) are more willing to listen to Sturgeon.

Again, purely anecdotally, I live in a very very popular costal town. The first weekend of lockdown, our beaches and high street (which I can see from my bedroom window) were heaving. They have been deserted ever since. This has been reflected in all local fb group posts as well.

We can all have an anecdote about our specific area but I'm extrapolating from far more than that. Not least the fact that we only have 200 people in hospital in the Lothian's and less than 13 in ITU. Something is working. I just hope we manage to keep it up.

Just looked at the polls - Trust in Johnson - 54%
Trust in Sturgeon - 74%

Scotland has far fewer cases.

Fewer cases maybe but a higher rate of infection

On the second week of lockdown I had to go Click and Collect shopping, my first drive out in 3 weeks and the roads were very quiet. Since then, I've been out again and the roads in my town are just like a quiet day, busy but not packed so I conclude people are not staying at home as much as they were at first - myself included. I don't go in shops or anywhere for exercise but now will drop things off at a family members house, such as a birthday gift, for instance but will disinfect item and my hands during and after dropping off whereas at start of lockdown I wouldn't leave the house at all.

I have a recurring shopping slot as I shop for 3 other vulnerable households but missed the checkout last week so had to click and collect twice this week at 2 different Asdas, the system my local asdas are using is shocking, I appreciate they want to serve more people but at one asda the staff were not social distancing as much as they were previously, even bending down to pick crates up at the same time a customer put it down (6 weeks ago I put it down and walked away then the worker walked towards it). At the second Asda, a worker was loading a car with a customer!

We had a social distance Street party yesterday, myself and my neighbours stayed to our own driveways, some other streets attached to ours began to mingle more which I witnessed on a walk at teatime. I deliberately did not drink much as didn't want to lose my inhibitions and take risks regarding social distancing.

What bugs me most is when it's sunny the streets are packed with people exercising yet they seem to care far less when the weather isn't so nice so to me they are not bothered about exercising they are just using it as an excuse to pass some time on a sunny day whereas we go in our back garden, though contradictory to this, I do enjoy seeing people walking and riding bikes more and hope it continues!

Maybe they exercise inside when it’s raining, I have. Only natural surely.

Oh and driving past our out of town B&M and The Range after collecting shopping and the car park was as busy as ever, people are using these trips to pass time. Indeed during the street party yesterday I observed a family car come home after 5 hours of being out, then proceed to unload a load of new household stuff from the car - as if they are decorating and redesigning a room.

Most people are following the rules though so even with the idiots who think it doesn’t apply to them, lockdown will still limit the spread.

@lilgreen it's more a case of a cloudy day vs a blue sky day.

Report
VerticalHorizon · 09/05/2020 10:06

We must remember that our 'lockdown' has been far less stringent than Spain or Italy, which may have contributed to our numbers. It is a fine balance between how stringent we can be vs how long it can be sustained vs the mental and emotional wellbeing of the nation vs the economic repercussions (which will also result in deaths)

Report
lilgreen · 09/05/2020 10:08

I still can’t get stressed about people wanting to go out for exercise on a sunny day rather than a cloudy day. It’s allowed!

I really don’t understand why The Range and B&M are open. Also hardware stores should only sell emergency items for diy that can’t wait like burst pipes etc-that’s why they’re open after all.

But even if you assume 40,000 Covid deaths, its death toll is in the same ballpark as diseases we live with, not something so extraordinary as to justify the lockdown reaction.

From the Spectator article - so because we may end up with the same number of deaths with CV (following lockdown) as with flu (no lockdown) then lockdown hasn’t served any purpose?

Don’t think I’ll be subscribing to the Spectator any time soon if they let people get away with this rubbish.

It is 30-40K WITH lockdown, those figures would be far higher without it.

It is seemingly far more contagious than flu, and survives on many surfaces for longer, so it is simply more aggressive. Given the chance, it would likely be more prevalent than flu too.

Also, flu forms are fairly well understood, but this Coronavirus is new and we need time to understand it and try to counter it. If in doubt, we play safe.

Sadly, it is misguided stuff like this that get spouted on social media, and if you dont think it through properly it initially sounds like legitimate argument. Quite dangerous.

VeganCow · 09/05/2020 10:52

its apparently a loss let contagious outdoors than in, let people go outside and enjoy the sun as long as they still keep distance. I see a lot of people sitting on chairs in front gardens but they are well apart.

Report
VeganCow · 09/05/2020 10:53

The Range and B&M sell food and pet food, that is why they are open.

Report
VerticalHorizon · 09/05/2020 11:34

It is mostly less contagious outdoors because of the wind, providing you're not downwind of someone with it, and in relative proximity.

I think this is why the government was ok with exercise in sensible form.

But, these things have a habit of breeding complacency, where we feel outdoors provides immunity rather than less risk. Or at the very least we become overly confident in outdoor activities, which then leads us to feel less worried about travel etc.... slowly it can start to undermine the effectiveness of restrictions.

We've already witnessed street parties where a few hours of happiness, and a drink or two can start to erode the distancing. A 'quick visit' to the neighbouring garden, a 'brief catchup' with the lady down the road etc. Seemingly minor breaches, but 1000s are doing it...

Finally they are going to announce quarantine measures for people arriving in U.K. from abroad

Should have done this 2 months ago at least

The same news article says that last month 15000 passengers were still arriving each day!
