@derenstar - it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that it’s because of undertesting.

LochJessMonster · 07/05/2020 19:14

derenstar climate? Both those countries have hot climates. The U.K., Europe and America have fairly mild climates in comparison which potentially helps the spread of infection?

PumpkinP · 07/05/2020 19:17

Apparently so, wondering about mixed race people, my DS is half white half black

I wondered this too as I’m mixed race but I guess it falls into the same category as black?

FTMF30 · 07/05/2020 19:17

@derenstar I'd assume vit D deficiency. It's difficult to get enough vit D in this country with lack of sunshine. Black/asian people need higher levels than white people so they don't fare well in that aspect in the UK.

derenstar · 07/05/2020 19:18

@GrumpyHoonMain thanks for that insightful contribution but I would hazard a guess that a large number of excess deaths in those countries would have been noticed by someone, even without mass testing.

derenstar · 07/05/2020 19:19

@FTMF30 bingo! It astounds me that hardly anyone is talking about this.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 07/05/2020 19:30

@PumpkinP nope.

In the data mixed ethnicity is its own category. It includes black and white, Asian and white amongst others.

With the various factors taken out your death rate is the same as the white population.

Well India has 800 million poor on less than £2 a day, they estimate 120 million have lost their jobs because of lockdown, with no state back up system, I bet there is a vast amount people dying of starvation before they get coronvirus

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 20:22

I can think of lots of reasons:

Inaccuracies with the census (using 2011 census when there are probably a much higher proportion of BAME in this country in 2020)

44% of doctors in the UK BAME

25% of nurses BAME
(NHS are superspreaders so family impacted)

BAME more likely to work on the frontline, eg taxi drivers, bus drivers, care workers, and in jobs where you can't WFH

Minorities tend to be poorer, and that's associated with poorer health

BAME in the western world more likely to suffer from Western diseases like diabetes than their white counterparts

Unconscious racism leading to poorer care for BAME in the health service

People have mooted vitamin D deficiency

More likely to live in overcrowded housing

BAME more likely to live in big cities like London and not out in the sticks. London etc hotspots due to overcrowding and public transport a necessity.

I can go on and on....

That’s reassuring thanks.

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 20:26

Rey point about the out if date census, I have just read this on Wikipedia regarding the increase in the black London population between the 2001 census and the 2011 one:

At the 2011 census, the total Black population of London stood at 1,101,688.[4] This is a rise of 39% from the 2001 census, when the population stood at 781,751.

So another 39% or more rise since the 2011 census is not unlikely

@LochJessMonster under prepared Western countries have an issue with testing and healthcare for their population, so how do you think African and Asian countries with worse healthcare systems are testing people?

Racist much?!

I think we would have noticed if hundreds of thousands of people were dying in African and Asian nations....how would they hide it?

Also, Africa as a continent managed to deal with Ebola pretty well.

There is international aid for poorer nations to cope with this.

Finally, Senagal are doing amazingly at the moment, testing masses of people, having developed $1 tests

Hmm

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 07/05/2020 21:19

@Namechangervaver the West wasn't bothered about Ebola until it threatened them.

And no I'm not being racist. If you don't test it you don't know how many people are actually infected or are dying of it as the symptoms vary.

OP posts:
Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 21:24

And I'm telling you that tests ARE being done

And yes I know the West don't give a shit when it doesn't affect them. What's that got to do with it?! Confused

Alex50 · 07/05/2020 21:24

How on earth will India be able to test 1.2 billion people?

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 21:26

And to reply to the title of this thread, aren't 83% of the people in the UK who have died from covid 19 white? So I don't see how you're ok if you're white FFS 🙄🤔

DianaT1969 · 07/05/2020 21:27

Italy and Spain had a high death toll. Does anyone know if the BAME population there were overrepresented in deaths?

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 21:29

Do they even have a BAME population?

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 21:31

Is Britain testing 67 million people? They can barely test the NHS!

isitfridayyet1 · 07/05/2020 21:40

OP I think its a bit of a sweeping statement to say 'you're ok as long as you're not old and not white'. Yes, you are less at risk but it doesn't mean there is no risk of a death from covid if you're not in the vulnerable group! No one knows how this illness will mutate and change in the future.
Threads like this are so unhelpful, its not just about your risk as an individual, its also about passing it on to someone who is in a vulnerable group and causing them to potentially die. I'm alright jack attitudes are what will spread this disease further and further.

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 21:42

I@sitfridayyet1 OP is mistaken. The vast majority of deaths in the UK are white people.

Namechangervaver · 07/05/2020 21:43

@isitfridayyet1 I meant
