So it doesn’t look like the lockdown is going to be extended does it?

Just caught the daily news briefing. Despite a lot of people on here last week thinking there’s no way they’ll be easing the lockdown before the end of May (and I admit, I too thought this!) it looks like BoJo may announce relaxations of the lockdown Sunday, possibly taking effect as of Monday?

I am a bit confused though as though the majority of the criteria for relaxation looks like it’s being met, there are still 4000 new infections each day, which is the pretty much the same amount as at the start of this pandemic so surely that’s still too high?

OP posts:

I received an email today from a theatre
"Following government advice, SOLT and UK Theatre have now advised all venues to close until 28th June, 2020 (extended from 31st May)."

Doesn't sound like they think restrictions are going to be lifted this week.

chunkycoke · 05/05/2020 20:33

I think it may relax a bit. But I'm not sure.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 20:33

OP did you post this before or after the news about Neil Ferguson?

I think there's a fighting chance of lockdown going next week if they use him as the fall guy - to be clear, I blame him massively as well as Johnson and Hancock.

Ariseandsmellthetea99 · 05/05/2020 20:33

I think lockdown will be eased significantly for May half term with schools beginning to open (children in, in shifts etc) in June.

MarshaBradyo · 05/05/2020 20:34

Didn’t the guidance to social distancing go out this week to businesses. So if it happens this week it’ll be to that - SD plus wfh, maybe

vanillandhoney · 05/05/2020 20:35

See, I think the total opposite. They aren't going to want people trying to travel to second homes/holiday homes during the break.

Letseatgrandma · 05/05/2020 20:36

I think lockdown will be eased significantly for May half term

I honestly don’t think so! People will be driving off to second homes/drinking in the park and having parties on the beach!

Ipadipod · 05/05/2020 20:39

I think they will have to give businesses a bit of a chance to get their act together regarding how they will provide a safe working environment, so lockdown will be extended for another few weeks.

pfrench · 05/05/2020 20:42

They can't ease lockdown before half term. Everyone will push off to Wales, the west country or the Lakes. I certainly would. They need to stop that happening.

greathat · 05/05/2020 20:43

I saw them saying they were really concerned about the increase in traffic on their charts and they needed to bring it down. Ending lockdown won't bring traffic down

cherrybloss · 05/05/2020 20:45

Surely the big increase in testing will have affected the figures? I haven't been watching all the briefings but I was under the impression it was hospital admissions that was the important figure.

Forgone90 · 05/05/2020 20:48

My guess is extention with weekly reviews after, however they will have small tweaks like social bubbles starting on Monday, then perhaps the next Monday smaller shops and so on and so Forth, Something will be changing tho this is why he is announcing it on Sunday ready for the new week.

TitsInAbsentia · 05/05/2020 20:50

I have a feeling they will extend to cover the end of May bank holiday too unless they are feeling really confident on new cases lowering.

Mgby1 · 05/05/2020 20:50

I also thought it was quite unbearable at times even though I am classed as a key worker so have still been going to work. At this moment I'm lying in a hospital bed having tested positive for covid-19. I hope it's not relaxed as people are not taking it seriously enough... I think there needs to be stronger clearer rules around what lockdown actually means.

cushioncovers · 05/05/2020 20:53

I think they will extend the lock down for another few weeks the daily death toll is still high. they made a point of mentioning the concern about an increase in traffic on the roads. So how can they go from being concerned today but easing the lockdown in a few days time?

MindyStClaire · 05/05/2020 20:58

I was expecting a three week extension with some detail of the plan for after that too.

I'm really hoping for a plan along the lines of the Irish one, with that level of detail. I just want to know what I'm aiming at.

TabbyMumz · 05/05/2020 21:00

Why on earth would you think lockdown ais ending? No way... Going to be another 3 weeks for sure.

ballsdeep · 05/05/2020 21:01

@Ariseandsmellthetea99
I'd eat my hat if lockdown was relaxed for half term! We've had an email saying our holiday has been cancelled in half term and can you imagine the choas with everyone out and about?!

ballsdeep · 05/05/2020 21:01

Chaos sorry!

CoronaIsComing · 05/05/2020 21:01

I thought we’d missed the memo about lockdown ending when we went for our daily exercise tonight. There were lots of groups of children playing out in the streets and a full on cricket match going on on the football field 😡 plus a group of 4 cars parked in the car park all in a circle and chatting together.

Letseatgrandma · 05/05/2020 21:01

I saw them saying they were really concerned about the increase in traffic on their charts and they needed to bring it down. Ending lockdown won't bring traffic down

Neither will opening schools.

ballsdeep · 05/05/2020 21:02

@Mgby1
I hope you're ok

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 05/05/2020 21:04

Very much hoping you're right OP - we need to summon up bit of courage and actually get the place up and running.

ACertainSupermarket · 05/05/2020 21:05

We are in the position to be behind most of Europe in terms of when lockdowns started - therefore it makes no sense to ease lockdown quickly without seeing the impact it has on other countries that do it before us. What schools do will be tied in closely, affecting whether parents are able to go back to work.

Mgby1 · 05/05/2020 21:06

@ballsdeep getting there slowly and with the best NHS help. Thankyou
