So it doesn’t look like the lockdown is going to be extended does it?

Just caught the daily news briefing. Despite a lot of people on here last week thinking there’s no way they’ll be easing the lockdown before the end of May (and I admit, I too thought this!) it looks like BoJo may announce relaxations of the lockdown Sunday, possibly taking effect as of Monday?

I am a bit confused though as though the majority of the criteria for relaxation looks like it’s being met, there are still 4000 new infections each day, which is the pretty much the same amount as at the start of this pandemic so surely that’s still too high?

"Most hospitals seem to be coping well"
A third of all covid patients admitted to hospital die. On what planet is that 'coping'?!

The patients aren't dying through lack of ventilators / medicine / staffing. There is sufficient bed space, ventilators and staff for covid19 patients.

They are dying because they have sadly succumbed to the virus. Not because the NHS cannot cope with them enough to keep them alive.

Bathroom12345 · 05/05/2020 22:04

The NHS can cope. We just don’t have a cure.

HaddawayAndShite · 05/05/2020 22:05

@Peppafrig it's a leading option for a withdraw plan apparently. I understand there needs to be some plans, but if the 60% plan goes ahead I can see it having drastic consequences for some people.

Another three weeks means 10 weeks of lockdown. Two ladies in our cul de sac, both in their 80`s, one has not opened a window or gone into the garden she loves for seven weeks now. The other goes into her back garden to let her dogs out but will not sit out in it. Another nearby lives in a McCarthy Stone flat, she has not stepped outside the door for seven weeks, her daughter shops for her, knocks on door and leaves.

So three ladies have not seen the sun for 7 weeks, I hope people like this can survive this incarceration even prisoners have company.

Rhubardandcustard · 05/05/2020 22:07

I’m not finding unbearable. I’m loving not rushing around crazy schedule and sitting down exhausted most evenings, cramming everything else into a weekend.

I don’t have a problem with them easing restrictions, but as someone with underlying health problems I won’t be rushing out to shop, meet friends or get back to the office. I’ll leave that to everyone else and see how things go for another month.

cushioncovers · 05/05/2020 22:08

I get the impression that as soon as boris said we are over the peak a certain percentage of people have just decided they can go back to normal. The roads are definitely busier in the last few days ( Im a key worker) and the local Tescos express has stopped counting people in and out and people in the shop were just walking by each other like a normal day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Itsjustmee · 05/05/2020 22:09

I think another 3 weeks of lockdown
I can’t see them wanting people fucking of to tourist locations over the half term
They may set out what will be happening after the half term if we stick to another 3 weeks of lockdown giving business the chance to get ready for any changes

PhilCornwall1 · 05/05/2020 22:11
  • Lockdown is inconvenient and causing hardship for some. Death is unbearable.*

I don't agree. People potentially having to explain to their children that the very roof over their head is going to be lost because of no job is unbearable.

Death isn't unbearable, it's one thing in your life that is guaranteed. Could be tomorrow, could be next year, who knows, but it's going to happen to all of us.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 05/05/2020 22:12

The argument that Neil Ferguson broke lockdown so it can't be that important is kind of a red herring.

Neil Ferguson is clearly a twit in this scenario, but his argument is that he had a confirmed case of Coronovirus and self isolated so was working on the basis that he knows he has had and has immunity so safe to go see his mistress. Of course so far immunity is still a working theory, not fully verified.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 05/05/2020 22:14

@PhilCornwall1- I’d rather explain to my son we were going to have to move than daddy is dead

The argument that Neil Ferguson broke lockdown so it can't be that important is kind of a red herring.

I wasn't saying it's not important, but it most certainly doesn't help the governments case does it?

I can agree, he is a twit, I have experience of that.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 05/05/2020 22:17

I really hope you are wrong we are shielding as a family , and grieving for a immediate family member lost to coronavirus. People in regular lockdown can go for walks etc it’s really not that strict a lockdown. People’s lives are more important.

Nonnymum · 05/05/2020 22:17

I think it will be extended. Its too soon to lift it with new cases every day. Raab said that it was important not to change things too quickly because of the risk of a second peak which is very real. The second peak of spanish flu killed more people than the first.
The Government have made people believe lockdown will be eased so maybe there will be a few small changes but not much. Maybe some non food shops will open.

megletthesecond · 05/05/2020 22:18

I'm not going anywhere until June at least.

2beautifulbabs · 05/05/2020 22:19

I have had enough now of lockdown I'm not even that bothered about shops re opening any time soon but just want the freedom to go out as many times as I want for fresh air go to different places for walks not just the same boring streets and most importantly to see my family and friends

Peppafrig · 05/05/2020 22:19

bananaskinsnomnom thanks it's not an emergency . I was just due to get two fillings the day after they announced lockdown. So I'm worried if I don't get seen soon it will result in losing two teeth that could have been saved with a simple filling.

frasersmummy · 05/05/2020 22:20

Nicola sturgeon has been quite clear.. The restrictions are not being lifted this week..

She is also quite clear that easing of restrictions in England won't necessarily be reflected here in Scotland

So it looks like we are in for a few more weeks of this...

PhilCornwall1 · 05/05/2020 22:23

@Lifeisgenerallyfun whilst I haven't had the conversation that dads dead (if I had, I'd be typing this from a very hot place Hmm), I've definitely had the "Dad isn't going to live as long as he should". This one still means there is a roof over their heads and future security.

I know what I'd find easier. Obviously it's different for everyone and I completely respect that.

loobyloo1234 · 05/05/2020 22:23

So we’ll have a longer lockdown than most of China if its another 3 weeks. What a fuck up by the government

ssd · 05/05/2020 22:26

I'm glad I'm in Scotland and it's almost certain to be extended here. Our First Minister is talking about how we will open up eventually and treating people like adults who can deal with an adult conversation.

Lovemusic33 · 05/05/2020 22:28

I think it will be extended, I’m not sure why people are thinking otherwise. They are making plans to lift the lockdown but it will be weeks before they start doing it, it will be gradual and will start with us being allowed to exercise more or sit outside with family.

The numbers of daily deaths are still 600+, it’s not safe to lift the lockdown however pissed off people are getting.

Anniesnotmydaddy · 05/05/2020 22:31

I've observed it to the letter and done exactly what has been asked of me. But if Neil Ferguson can do what he likes then I can too. I'll go out more than once a day now if I fancy it. I'm prepared to do what's needed for the good of society and that's what I have done but I won't subscribe to 'do as I say, not as I do'.

It makes no difference to me now whether it's extended or not.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 05/05/2020 22:32

It will be extended. The only reason to lift it would be to placate Tory donors and considering we now have the highest death rate in Europe that probably isn't a good enough reason.

Elpresidente29 · 05/05/2020 22:33

@PhilCornwall1
I just wanted to say your comment is spot on! If only more people thought like you do!
In fact I will re post it again:

“I don't agree. People potentially having to explain to their children that the very roof over their head is going to be lost because of no job is unbearable.

Death isn't unbearable, it's one thing in your life that is guaranteed. Could be tomorrow, could be next year, who knows, but it's going to happen to all of us.“

Just so true. I’ve nothing else to add. Amen!!
So so so true.
