University Fees for on-line Lectures

Latest this morning(sorry if it is already on here, I checked and could not see a thread)
www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-52506283

Just wondering how those of you with DC due to start (or return to Uni) in the Autumn feel about full tuition fees for on-line learning?
I feel there should be a reduction as the teaching is not the same on-line as face to face.

As a reminder, this is what I actually posted:

If it truly is the case that your DS has had no contact with his lecturers since mid-March, then he should definitely complain.

However, I know from direct experience that there is frequently a very big gap between what students tell each other, their parents, sometimes even themselves, and what the reality is.

You flew off the handle and turned that into me calling him a liar. I’ll refrain from drawing the obvious parallels.

AgileLass · 05/05/2020 16:04

And do you have anything helpful to add for instances where there isn't a disconnect?

Like I’ve already posted, the university’s own complaints procedures and the OIA.

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 16:04

Then he should complain....I already said this.
There will be a clear complaints procedure.

brassbrass · 05/05/2020 16:04

I'm afraid your second comment negated your first.

AgileLass · 05/05/2020 16:05

How so?

ListeningQuietly · 05/05/2020 16:09

local universities are using allowing some science undergraduates to volunteer at testing centres to get their lab experience.
Physics?
Elec Eng?
Mech Eng?
Ship Science ?
Aeronautics?

brassbrass · 05/05/2020 16:11

And back to obtuse.

Just leave it agile you've nothing helpful to add. Plenty of other posters on this thread.

Grendlsmother · 05/05/2020 16:12

Bang on ...The Open University seems more experienced prepared and able to deliver online degrees than physical universities.

YogaFaker · 05/05/2020 16:16

I came on to say that expecting young people with no income to accrue debt without receiving anything in return is not ok

And the academics on this thread have explained - patiently and in detail - that what students "pay" for** is not the hourly rental of an academic-for-hire.

And you have persistently ignored & dismissed the knowledge and experience of academics on this thread and at your DC's university.

** They don't really. The Tuition fee loan is set up so it's the taxpayer who pays ...

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 16:16

grend but that's because that's what they do! Physical universities have had to adapt in a very short time.
I was given less than a weeks notice that my course would go online. I think, in most cases, we've done an admirable job.

AgileLass · 05/05/2020 16:18

I’ve said nothing that hasn’t been agreed with by other experienced academic posters.

You’ve decided to target and insult me for the last hour for mildly pointing out that students generally don’t always fully represent what’s going on to their parents.

AgileLass · 05/05/2020 16:20

snug twat [sic]

obtuse

poor kids who have to suffer you

back to obtuse

Charming

brassbrass · 05/05/2020 16:21

No they haven't they can't possibly know how each course is costed across the country so have no way of knowing if DS has had his fee worth of tuition this year. You literally don't know.

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 16:21

And it's not always young students agile I once had a 40 odd year old student complain at the lack of support. When the complaint was investigated they found he'd had 6 one to one tutorials ( 3 more than he was entitled to) and I'd replied to over 250 emails.

AgileLass · 05/05/2020 16:23

Oof. I hope that student was suitably abashed when the reality was pointed out to him, SueEllen. Somehow they never are, are they?

250 emails??! Shock

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 16:25

But brass we can make an educated guess. There are guidelines and expectations that sit across all institutions.
Having set up lots of courses I understand how they are set up and costed.

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 16:26

Eventually agile especially when he was threatened with disciplinary action for lying and harassment - he'd sent over 500 emails.

AgileLass · 05/05/2020 16:28

That’s horrible SueEllen - I’m sorry that happened to you.

YogaFaker · 05/05/2020 16:34

for mildly pointing out that students generally don’t always fully represent what’s going on to their parents

Indeed. I've even got to the point of formal disciplinary proceedings with students, whose parents have been outraged, even when the evidence is clear of cheating or non-attendance, or so on.

I don't feel smug about that - it's really sad to see such breakdowns in communication and expectations.

YogaFaker · 05/05/2020 16:35

OMG @SueEllenMishke that is scary. And how unusual that it was a mature male student harassing a female academic. Hmm

brassbrass · 05/05/2020 16:41

But you are being all of those things 🤷 and you keep brining it back to me so it is your choice. You're not helping. I think that's the 3rd time I've said that so why not just stop?

brassbrass · 05/05/2020 16:44

It's still only a guess. You don't seem to have capacity to cope with the fact that some students are actually being ripped off.

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 16:56

Thank you agile and yoga
It was a little scary at the time but my uni were fab.

SueEllenMishke · 05/05/2020 17:06

But there is also a lot of evidence that students have unrealistic expectations.
If he thinks he's being ripped off then he needs to complain and the OIA decide.

PerplexingWords · 05/05/2020 17:18

I realise this has turned in to a fairly unpleasant bun fight, but...

We will definitely be encouraging DD to take up her place.

  • It is a science course, and the practical elements will have to be covered at some point.
  • Next year is still an unknown quantity, and may not be significantly better.
  • The skills she learns in adapting to this strange new world will stand her in good stead for the rest of her life.
  • If she can be in halls great, but if not, we can cross that bridge when we get to it.
