Time to get real people

Ok I think it's time to get a grip on reality!

Coronavirus is pretty nasty but it isn't apocalypse now time. Most of us are going to get it at some point and we will be just fine. So will our families and friends.
The UK cannot stay locked down for much longer without producing a national disaster that will reverberate for decades. So - you will be going back to work, your kids will be going back to school. Wash your hands well and enjoy your lives.
I'm just so sick of the posts prophesying carnage and really enjoying competitive isolation. For most people living like this is borderline harmful. For some it is already actively harmful.

We have to come out from under the bed. Wear a mask, wear gloves if you like but be prepared to live a normal if socially distanced life.

All epidemics burn themselves out eventually. We are much better placed to treat and protect the vulnerable then ever before. At some point soon we have to just get on with it.

OP posts:

Thanks for the links, and very nice to see my question actually answered in the spirit in which it was intended 😊

TryingToBeBold · 03/05/2020 18:39

Just read the Tattooist of Auschwitz

It could be worse

Witchend · 03/05/2020 18:39

@Ormally we agree!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 03/05/2020 18:39

OP out of interest does working on a Sunday pay more or do the nudge unit only pay the same rate, I'm sure I could learn on the job or would I need training?

mrpumblechook · 03/05/2020 18:39

I always find it a bit laughable when posters state that people should stop "prophesying carnage" and should learn to live with the fact that they or their loved ones may die but at the same time predict that if we don't end lockdown immediately it will be a national disaster with millions dying of starvation for decades to come. We have evidence of the former but not of the latter and yet they think those that want lockdown to be released only gradually are the ones overreacting.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/05/2020 18:39

SAGE are looking for experts to join them. Lots on MN should consider it 🧐

cantory · 03/05/2020 18:41

We are only just being told that many people who are seriously ill with this are left with long term kidney problems. They must have known about this for ages and this is the first we hear?
We have been lied to again and again.

Before lock down I and other posters were told we were batshit crazy to say this could kill a lot of people and we were told over and over again that only those over 80 or likely to die in a few months anyway, were likely to die.
When we talked about possible long term health impacts for those who survive we were told there would be none.

We were right back then, I think we are still right to realise that sending all kids back to school and getting on with life as the OP suggests, will kill a lot of people and leave lots with long term health problems.

Ormally · 03/05/2020 18:41

@Witchend first time I have seen that from somewhere else. I'm really fascinated by it!

cantory · 03/05/2020 18:41

@LadyWithLapdog SAGE reportedly has Dominic Cummings on it. What is his expertise?

So I find it a bit unsettling for it to be claimed that people cannot possibly live during a pandemic on the sum of money I live on all the time

People live to their means. It's v difficult to go from say 2 ft salaries to only UC when your mortgage and bills are based on what you did have coming in.

Use your imagination. Just because you do live on it doesn't mean everyone can adapt immediately and not struggle Hmm

7Days · 03/05/2020 18:44

cantory this is a novel virus. Every day they are gathering new data. It's just incorrect to say 'they must have known this for ages'. There is enough to complain about without bringing up stuff like that. Its entirely reasonable to make observations after a time.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/05/2020 18:45

@Cantory don’t get me started on DC’s nefarious influence.

mrpumblechook · 03/05/2020 18:46

Use your imagination. Just because you do live on it doesn't mean everyone can adapt immediately and not struggle

I would rather adapt than be dead or suffer long-term health complications. The people who say they wouldn't just don't think they will suffer from long-term health complications.

merrymouse · 03/05/2020 18:46

What difference does it make? It’s the same principle keep money in circulation until the growth is happening sufficiently to start reducing annual deficits.

No it isn't. Debts still need to be serviced, but a stimulated economy creates more income. Even after lockdown has finished, it's likely that the economy will be restricted for months to come. This is new territory.

cantory · 03/05/2020 18:46

@7days They talked about thousands of people left with kidney problems and there being an international shortage of correct equipment to treat it as a result. Of course the government has known for ages. This has not just appeared.

Devlesko · 03/05/2020 18:47

Trust

We had a turn over of millions, doesn't mean it was our money Grin
Like many businesses in one hand and out the other.
We don't make much ourselves, but love the work we do, when we can do it.

cantory · 03/05/2020 18:47

@LadyWithLapdog He has killed people through his influence and is totally unaccountable.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 03/05/2020 18:48

JustAnother yy I wonder about the rates of pay and the experience levels too. imo the nudge unit needs a little work.
There's a lot of mixed messaging going on. We're all middle class. But also lazy. We're wealthy enough to stay at home. Yet also hoovering up government money on the furlough scheme. We're watching Netflix in our pj's but also working from home. We're fantasists whilst quoting facts and science.
There's a lot of cognitive dissonance going on.
It's hilarious in a way. Dropping into social media without understanding a particular site's demographics or posting style leaves you with a situation like when the WEP tried to borrow MNers for photo calls.

maddy68 · 03/05/2020 18:49

I have lost three members of the family 35, 52 and 60 all in good health , no underlying factors

This has been underplayed if anything to avoid panic

Bollss · 03/05/2020 18:50

I would rather adapt than be dead or suffer long-term health complications. The people who say they wouldn't just don't think they will suffer from long-term health complications

Good for you I'd rather take my chances and not lose my house. That should be a choice I am allowed to make.

etopp · 03/05/2020 18:50

OP, I completely agree with you. MN is such an echo chamber of self-righteousness that a lot of people who also agree won't dare to say so, though.

cantory · 03/05/2020 18:51

@mrpumblechook I agree. People don't think they will be the ones to suffer long term lung damage or kidney problems. Or they don't understand the realities of living with these conditions.
