Just seen on daily fail (sorry!) that Boris is going to announce that we will be lockdown until June at least.

Not sure if I can cope that long. 😩

oh, so you can't go to pilates or for a coffee, big deal. Of course we can't go on holiday, and it won't happen anytime soon for that one. But let's stop being so ridiculous, we are still pretty much free to do as we please.

No one is checking or cares if you see your boyfriend, people have family staying overnight, builders are working and disturbing the neighbourhood.

I don't know where YOU live, but I am in the UK, it's not quite a lockdown here.

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 20:55

And that is bollocks. We are absolutely not free to do as we please.

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 20:56

Unless you’re saying you’re free to do as you please because you are ignoring the guidelines?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/04/2020 21:01

Crap. It's my uncle's 85th birthday tomorrow. I want to go and see him, give him a big and take him out to lunch. I want to go to work in the office tomorrow instead of in my dining room. I want to go out for a meal rather than ordering a takeaway. I want my hair coloured rather than doing it myself. As I can't do any of those things I'm really not free to do as I please.

OneandTwenty · 30/04/2020 21:03

of course you CAN, who is stopping you?

There's no real lockdown in the UK, and people are clearly doing as they please. At best we have "guidelines", and many don't even bother respecting them.

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 21:04

But let's stop being so ridiculous, we are still pretty much free to do as we please.

So you're breaking guidelines and being selfish? Seeing friends and family? Going to the pub maybe? Or do you have a secret shopping centre or cinema in your back garden? Do let us know

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 21:05

Well I’m not doing as I please, as I’m following guidelines. And as I said, I can’t do most of the things I ‘please’, as everything is shut.

TriangleBingoBongo · 30/04/2020 21:09

@AmelieTaylor

I said they could give us an indication based on their projections, the benefit of experience from other companies and acknowledged that date might move owing to the many variables?

Where does a crystal ball come into play?

TriangleBingoBongo · 30/04/2020 21:10

*other countries

The government seem fairly happy that it's reduced the R-number to below 1 which was the whole point, and even say that people have complied better than they had expected and planned for... so it's a success, right? I mean, it's done what it was intended to do, so the people who were calling for a real proper Wuhan weld-them-in-their-houses style lockdown can be relieved that something less strict has done the job?

TriangleBingoBongo · 30/04/2020 21:14

@poshme

Thank you for pointing that out. I can neither be furloughed nor do I qualify as a key worker for childcare. I’ve got both ends of the shit stick.

My DH is still out the house 50 hours a week. I’m so fed up.

TeacupDrama · 30/04/2020 21:30

there are guidelines and the law the guidelines help explain the law but are not the law themselves
ie in England it says you can go out for exercise and shopping it doesn't specify exactly how long or how frequently that is in the guidelines( maybe an hours walk etc) or what counts as essential shopping ( food medicine essential household repairs)
some idiots thought this meant you could go out to exercise then go out to do shopping then go out with dog the go to work then go and collect prescription all on one day, other equally stupid idiots the other way say you can only go shopping every 3 weeks you don't need milk you can put grated cheese as its made from milk in your coffee
both groups are equally dangerous idiots to put it mildly
There are lots of very normal things we can't do; so saying it is not restrictive is rubbish even though it might be a bit more restrictive elsewhere doesn't make it not restrictive here
we can't go to cafes, or normal shopping, can't play most sports, kids are not in school can't play with their friends no clubs scouts swimming etc loads of people can't work and are worried about money because either they have less or there might not be a job to go back to, lots of people are very lonely as their social life is now non existent lots older people in particular need this they are not so tech savvy and lots are deaf so zoom and facetime is not the answer for them they relied on their clubs church mosque garden centres etc to met their friends

poshme · 30/04/2020 21:46

@TriangleBingoBongo yes.

So many people saying 'you can get furloughed' (I know that furlough leads to finance issues)

Wfh with kids & DH working many hours both at home & out isn't easy.

Russellbrandshair · 30/04/2020 21:49

But let's stop being so ridiculous, we are still pretty much free to do as we please

Very true. So far this week I’ve had a haircut, been to the cinema, eaten out at a restaurant, sunbathed on the beach, had a picnic with my friends, took the kids to football club, been for a long drive for a day out, had a pub lunch in a beer garden, went to church, and went shopping in the mall.

Oh wait- I didn’t do ANY of those things because they aren’t allowed. But yeah- we are so FREE aren’t we? 🙄

Whataloadofshite · 30/04/2020 23:02

@WhenTheRabbitsWentWild

I have CPTSD, and believe me I fucking know it's hard but we all have to try.

Thanks for assuming I don't have a clue though.

squeekums · 01/05/2020 00:24

@TopBitchoftheWitches then how would I pay my rent, bills and feed my kids?
It's not as simple as that and if customers could simply stay 2m away from me that would help alot.
That's not an unreasonable request, so think whatever you want.

How would the people who you think should stay home pay bills. rent and buy food?
Look, your concerned about your health, fair play, but all are in the same boat and your position isnt special, in fact your one of the lucky ones who still has a job. Many dont and wont have one to go back too.
Its not an unreasonable request but you cant make poeple do anything and if the risk is that big in your mind you have 2 choices, suck it up or quit, it sucks, its not fair but it is how it is.

Dont worry, if someone said what you have to me IRL, id have replied the similar but more of a 'ok then, i shall take your job so you can stay home" and accept the risks, while enjoying the pay

squeekums · 01/05/2020 00:28

But let's stop being so ridiculous, we are still pretty much free to do as we please.

Really?
So cinemas open? Can go browse non essential shops? get takeaway? How was the football over the weekend?
Are people getting stopped by the cops for sitting on a bench or being in a park?
How many threads on here about neighbours wanting to report others for mixing in groups

If you were free to do as you please, all of the above wouldnt be happening

cantory · 01/05/2020 01:17

@squeekems Most people can't quit their job. If they do they are not even entitled to basic welfare benefits. They would literally have nothing.
That is why we have health and safety laws because we recognise that people should be sage at work and if it is not safe most can't just walk away and quit.
I really hope that anyone put at risk by employers who dies is sued by families. And yes that includes NHS staff.

Neves7 · 01/05/2020 02:52

Suppose the government announced that on Monday the lockdown would be over. What do you suppose would happen?

Bluntness100 · 01/05/2020 07:09

what do you mean if the government announces lock down is over? There is a massive difference between the current lock down and moving into phase two with a staggered and gentle lifting of restrictions, which is clearly what will occur.

So do you mean if they announce lock down is over and they announce phase two with a staggered and gentle lifting of restrictions to start to get the economy back up and running or do you mean lock down is over and immediate return to normal life with everything operational as usual.

Because the latter is a pointless question, it isn’t going to happen, we all know that, the former, well there will be a small uptick in cases that needs to be monitored closely to ensure the nhs stays within capacity. It’s a delicate balancing act.

Kingjarvis · 01/05/2020 07:18

squeekums

You can get takeaway. I get one every Saturday night.
The guidelines also say no more than 2 people gathering outside so that means that you can meet up with your partner or a parent, surely?

TriangleBingoBongo · 01/05/2020 07:43

@poshme

Am in the same boat. DH working outside the home as normal. I’m really struggling. I’d love to be furloughed. I’d even take it unpaid.

amelisa1 · 01/05/2020 08:02

@GrimmsFairytales
Well... nannies can still work in the households. Maybe your friend can hire one for couple of hours?
Also, if her children are preschool age, she can contact her LA, Early Years Dep and check if there are any arrangements for emergency situations, or she can call directly the nurseries that remained opened and check if they cover such arrangements.

GrimmsFairytales · 01/05/2020 10:02

I had no idea nannies were still working, does that apply to those who already employ them?

As It makes a lot more sense for me to have the kids for a few hours, as apposed to a brand new nanny who has never met them before.

amelisa1 · 01/05/2020 22:06

@GrimmsFairytales.
They should not be working unless their work is absolutely essential and not able to work from home.Is a loophole but a bit risky, for example if the nanny is positive Covid 19, your family will be exposed and vice versa. Also, may create an opportunity for a claim against you if the nanny is getting ill while at work and you, the employer demanded her to do the job. Also, legally if they have been furloughed by a different employer they should not take another job while furloughed. As I said, is a loophole used by childcare agencies...
