Just seen on daily fail (sorry!) that Boris is going to announce that we will be lockdown until June at least.

Not sure if I can cope that long. 😩

You will just have to put up with things, until it seems possible, that we can come out of lock down. There is no point in thinking that other countries have done this or that whatever. We just have to go by the rules of the government here, and trust them to be doing the best for everyone.

"germany have seen an increase though it was mentioned yesterday by raab"

Gabsalot Raab was wrong - no surprise there

In Germany, new case and deaths are continuing the gradual downward trend
there have even been 2 days in the last week when new deaths fell below 100

He was (mis-)using the R0 number - a theoretical measure of how many people are infected by one person, calculated with a wide statistical range

That R0 number had risen on Monday to 1.0 (95% confidence interval 0.8 - 1.1)
but yesterday had fallen - before Raab's press conference - to 0.75 (95% confidence interval: 0.64- 0.87)
(RKI report 29/04/2020, 12:00 am)

All with no dramatic changes in either new cases or deaths, just the same gradual reduction trend,
I have to wonder how meaningful these theoretical calculations of R0 are 🤔

In Germany - where I live - the public would require a lot of explanation to revert to strict lockdown without a rise in new cases and deaths,
regardless of theoretical R0

@Rainbow12e Furlough is until the end of June - it's already been extended.

True them?! Fucking hell, we are all doomed, aren't we? Nope, I'll be using my common sense as I see fit. The government doesn't give a fuck about me and mine, or you and yours, only about money and themselves.

RoseMartha · 30/04/2020 14:42

It wouldn't surprise me at all.

I am struggling everyday as one of my dc has asd and behaviour issues have shot through the roof. Juggling this with running the household, one to one support for child with asd with school work, working from home, taking care of elderly parents who do not live with us and refuse outside help and shopping for me and kids plus three other households. Support is currently zero and sometimes I dont think I can stand it for another day. But some how I have to. But it is making me feel really depressed.

Mum2Girls19 · 30/04/2020 14:43

The problem is regardless of all this conversation we will do as we are told tbh
The government have been quite clear in saying to lock down is not lifting and I think it'll be exactly the same this time next week at the review

There is no point moaning about something we cant control.
I am working from home whilst trying to home school 4 kids, its not an ideal situation but there is no better one

whatisforteamum · 30/04/2020 14:44

Poshme undoubtedly harder home schooling you have my sympathies. My husband and I are on low incomes and I work in hospitality so that could go to the wall. This would ve been harder when the dcs were younger.
Everyone is in the same boat with th e uncertainty.Luckily we have a garden even if it is tiny
.I havent found food prices have gone up where I live.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/04/2020 14:46

Ivory tower? I wish. I'm in various supermarkets everyday with no ppe and customers treat us like shit, no ivory tower at all.

BenjiB · 30/04/2020 14:47

I’d wait until an official announcement. I went to work yesterday for the first time and it was business as usual. All the industrial units with people working sensibly And at a distance. Honestly I don’t think, unless they put military on the roads, that many will adhere to it.

RingtheBells · 30/04/2020 14:47

I think furlough was extended to stop companies making people redundant as it takes 45 days to do this and the extension coincided with when 45 days would start or something like that. So now companies would begin to make people redundant from mid May

cantory · 30/04/2020 14:49

Well my company will adhere to it. It will not reopen until it is safe to do so.
Industrial units are often owned by sole traders. I have two friends who have one and both are still working. Their line of work is permitted by the government and they are following all the rules.

Stop whining ... right?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/04/2020 14:52

I'm not whining, I'm explaining what it is like to have no choice but to work ATM. People are whining about having to stay home, big difference. But be as obtuse as you like, we are scared, really scared.

"@YuronaI'm very sorry to hear of that situation, but based on statistics, you're very veryunusual "

Is she? I know no one who has died of covid, I know many who are facing serious financial ruin, mental health problems and death as a result of lockdown (2 people let go from jobs as business folded, one self employed but not for long enough to claim , all likely to loose homes, 1 awaiting cancer treatment but it's been put on hold, 1 had fertility treatment cancelled indefinitly and she quite frankly feels this is the end for her now)

FliesandPies · 30/04/2020 14:55

we are scared, really scared

Stop whining and don't be so dramatic, you work in a supermarket ffs

GrimmsFairytales · 30/04/2020 14:55

People are whining about having to stay home, big difference.

You choose to see it as whingeing. Personally I see it as people admitting their struggles and worries. Which is no different to what you're doing.

Russellbrandshair · 30/04/2020 14:59

Ffs just stop whining!

Not so nice when it’s directed at you is it? 🤔

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/04/2020 15:00

@Fliesandpies yes I do, not being dramatic, customers seem to think we are immune and stand next to us etc, not just one supermarket either.

But you carry on moaning about how hard it is to stay at home away from this.

Russellbrandshair · 30/04/2020 15:01

But you carry on moaning about how hard it is to stay at home away from this

You realise many women and kids are locked in with their abusers? Their lives are at risk. But yes, why don’t they just stop whining!

WhereIsTheLove1234 · 30/04/2020 15:04

I hate it when people tell others ‘you’ll just have to cope’ or ‘just deal with it’. Suicides are up and domestic violence is 50% up. Some people literally cannot cope and are desperate. Just because we can’t turn up at their house to physically support doesn’t mean shouldn’t offer them the same sympathy and emotional support we would at other times. Anyone who is struggling, please focus on getting as much help and support as you for the next few weeks, keep reaching out and remember that it’s just a few weeks more now.

eveoha · 30/04/2020 15:04

Lockdown could continue til kingdom come but won’t make any real difference to infection/mortality rate - 50% coming from ‘nursing homes’ - and rest from London - country is being held to ransom until those figures come down - which they won’t - Government is stalling and obfuscating as they have no clue how to proceed - and we the sheeple accept this unquestioningly Angry

FliesandPies · 30/04/2020 15:05

TopBitchoftheWitches funny, I have the opposite experience where customers are going out of their way to distance and staff are taking no notice of the rules. I have also found staff to be chatty and relaxed on the whole, certainly not scared.

You're being dramatic and deliberately unpleasant but, if that works for you crack on.

Wakaranaihito · 30/04/2020 15:06

I've started to be very wary of the Govt saying they are following the science. They are listening to the science but the decisions they make are theirs. South Korea followed the science, so did Germany and Sweden but they've made different choices.

Seems, at least with South Korea and Germany, they have made better decisions than our leaders.

Hang on, so you're saying that he not only used the wrong stat for what was supposed to be increasing, but that even the stat itself had been superseded before he used it?? Shock
