Realistically, how often do you go to the shops per week?

How often do you go to the shops, including if you pop in for milk one day etc

I mean if everyone in the family is healthy.

We‘ve managed to get one delivery a week and I haven’t been to the shops for 5 weeks.

Supermarket once a week, local very small co-op once or twice a week depending on how quickly the kids go through the milk.

Have always shopped in this way. Don't ever do online grocery shopping, and Ocado doesn't exist here.

Supermarket shopping is perfectly safe - I visit mid-morning when it's quiet and it;s all very civilised.

DH goes twice a week. It's just us two here.

We started out trying to do once a week, but without a car it was too much to carry, and we initially had more cupboard staples in, too. Still partly living off stuff that's been in the pantry forever, and Huel, and only partly on the fresh stuff we're buying. I expect once we run out of old staples will need to add a third trip to the shop.

Big delivery once a week and perhaps pop to local store approx once a fortnight for extra milk or eggs etc if we run out.

Supermarket once a week.
Greengrocer and the butcher (next each other) once a week.
Small Co-Op once a fortnight.
Am buying for us at home and my elderly parents. Their stuff is dropped to them once a week.

Once a week, there are 4 in our household.

It would probs be more but the experience is so crap now - always having to go alone (to leave one at home with the DC), then queuing, navigating the arrows while avoiding everybody else - neither of us ever wants to go so things are being stretched a bit further!
We always make sure to get enough junk food to ensure no urge for an extra 'unnecessary' trip.

3 times typically, this represents a major reduction in visits as I was in double figures before! We only have an icebox in our fridge (no proper freezer) and fridge is consequently only 3/4 size - simply impossible to shop (on foot - no car) any less

One shop a week. Sometimes we get an Ocado delivery and sometimes we have a meat delivery from the butcher. No one in the household goes to the shops more than once a fortnight.

Ive been to the supermarket 2 times in the last 6 weeks, we are fortunate enough to have a fridge/freezer, spare fridge thats usually a drinks fridge and a chest freezer so i have plenty of space to keep fresh stuff. Ive had 2 tesco deliveries as well which i had booked prior to lockdown as i always book them in monthly blocks and have managed to get an asda delivery slot for next week. Family of 5 with 2 of those in the vulnerable catagory

Family of 4, we have a asda delivery every Saturday then do a top up shop for milk, bread and fruit on a Wednesday morning.

Family of 5, husband and 1 child shielding so it's all down to me.

I do ALDI and ASDA on the same day (can't get everything I need in one or the other) then just once again for fresh milk/fruit/veg or anything that may have been out of stock that we need for planned meals. I plan prescription collections for the same time I food shop so I minimise going out to protect the family.

I could realistically go nearly 2 weeks if I didn't need fresh milk, fruit or veg and lived solely off chips, pasta and rice so I try to stretch as long as I can between visits.

It's not perfectly safe for the staff working there when people are popping in more often than they really need to.
I used to be a just pop in sort of person. Now like someone described above, those odd items get added to The List and wait until the weekly shop.

I can't remember the last time I went in a shop! I've done click & collect every 8-9days and with careful meal planning and using the freezer that's been easily manageable, if a bit low on fresh fruit and veg towards the end of the week. That said, I drink non-dairy milk so always buy the long life cartons and have several in stock. Similarly I don't eat much bread so if I buy it it lives in the freezer.

Most people could manage to just shop once (or for some twice) if they tried to plan ahead more and organise themselves. But huge numbers are going 3 or 4 times a week.

These extra visits could be cut out if people;

  • planned the weekly shop more carefully
  • added things they think of mid-week to the list for next week rather than going for it mid-week
  • accepted not always having exactly top choice of food every day

If people cannot get enough bread or milk or fruit to last a week without going off, they might need to go a 2nd time. However, those things always last at least 4 days, so why would anyone need to go more than twice a week. And actually, often milk or veg will last a week.

I think people like a little trip to the shop for variety, plus don't quite get their act together to reduce the needed visits, plus haven't really acknowledged that every trip into a shop is a risk to themselves, shop workers and other shop workers, even if small. Where else do people think the virus is still being picked up from, apart from in care homes?

Currently, never.

I have a weekly main delivery and, rarely, a second mini delivery (we are in an area where Ocado Zoom covers).

Well, I see your point however none of those things (which I've done, the last one because well if it's not there I can't buy it can I?) Enable me to carry more than I can carry..... A relatively small backpack that I put milk, potatoes, dog food, tins in because it's easier to carry on my back and then a reusable shopping bag because carrier bags are shit anyway walking two miles it's not about lack of planning or anything here, it's about lack of a pack horse. I would normally get a bus, but, we've been asked to stay off them unless absolutely necessary so key workers and elderly/vulnerable can use them with more chance of observing social distancing.
It's the lesser of two evils for me.

I do weekly shops quite easily. I use tinned and frozen for fruit and veg. I freeze meat and bread. I get enough milk for the week etc. I don't have a bit freezer either. Just meal plan. I've had orders where things have been missing and I've just gone without. I fully understand those going several times a week as they cannot carry everything. I'm not sure car drivers have an excuse really?
Some people are still not taking this seriously or are getting relaxed in their view about it.

Same here Unworthie, going shopping for us involves walking 1.5-2 miles up a massive hill- we aren't doing good it for fun. We can either go once a week and get a taxi, twice a week and use a bus or 3 times a week and walk, so we're choosing to walk. It isn't because we're disorganised or fancy a trip out or are picky about what we eat or too lazy to do a meal plan.

My shopping habits haven't changed, to be honest. Once a week. Pre-covid and now.

BUT we're not a big family, don't eat bread and don't drink milk. If we'd use these things, it would be more often, I guess.
