Realistically, how often do you go to the shops per week?

How often do you go to the shops, including if you pop in for milk one day etc

I mean if everyone in the family is healthy.

Once a fortnight for big shops, then maybe once every 2-3 days to the shop across the road for milk/bread/fruit.

YinMnBlue · 27/04/2020 11:46

Once every two weeks.

We do not 'pop in' anywhere.

I freeze enough milk for beyond the Use By date of the fresh milk we buy.

Buy 'short term' fruit and veg to use in the first week, and 'long lasting' for the second week (white cabbage, red cabbage, a whole pineapple, oranges, sweet potatoes, etc)

Buy frozen veg - green beans and petit pois are good, leaf spinach for curries and pasta dishes.

Tinned pulses, tins of things like artichoke hearts (pasta and paella) , veg for stir fry like bamboo shoots and water chestnuts.

Freeze some bread products (packet of bagels) , packets of wraps / tortillas are long lasting, and when flour can be grabbed, use the breadmaker to make our bread.

Cheese, Greek yogurt etc all lasts.

Frozen bags of salmon fillets, cod, etc. Freeze meat.

Our freezer is three drawers in a fridge freezer, so not massive.

We haven't missed anything or eaten shoddily by shopping every two weeks.

Twice a week..once for us, once for in laws

ssd · 27/04/2020 11:46

I'm asking as I had a conversation with a neighbour who swore to me they go once a week. But I've seen her dh bringing in bags at least twice a week too.
It made me think, people must not realise how often they actually go.

When I said you in the tutke, I actually meant you as a family or household.
Sorry for confusion.

We get most things delivered through a variety of means. I’ve been to physical shops twice in the past 6 weeks.

Pinkblueberry · 27/04/2020 11:49
  1. 1 ‘big’ shop. Then a ‘small’ shop for stuff we couldn’t get in the supermarket. Then another ‘small’ shop for more bread, milk, fruit etc. 2 adults and a toddler. If we had a bigger freezer we’d probably go one less, I used to freeze bread and milk all the time before I lived with DH.
Ginkypig · 27/04/2020 11:50

I've been able to get an online delivery once a week (for me and I add stuff for two neighbours to it too) just through luck and persistence as I'm not on any lists. I'm disabled and am very grateful as I wouldn't be able to do a "big" shop and get it home even if it was just basic milk etc

Apart from that there have been a grand total of 2 visits to the local shop when either a number of essentials hasn't turned up or one week the milk ran out and the bread went off within a couple of days of delivery.

Bluesheep8 · 27/04/2020 11:50

Every 2 weeks to Aldi. Probably every other day for milk. DP tends to do that and I do the Aldi shop.

Ninkanink · 27/04/2020 11:51

Maybe some people don’t realise how often they go...Or they only count their one shopping trip and mentally discount popping in for bits and bobs here and there.

I’ll continue to keep shop visits to the minimum for as long as I can since that’s where I’m most likely to catch it and subsequently potentially spread it.

bigbluebus · 27/04/2020 11:52

Fortnightly to the supermarket. Pick up milk at village shop once a week on way back from a Boris walk. DH gets fruit and veg from a market stall once a week. I can hand on heart say that we haven't been to any other shops and only ordered essential items on line - which has been 3 items since lockdown.

YinMnBlue · 27/04/2020 11:52

Constantly popping into shops seems high risk to me, so we don't do it. None of us.

The High St and in shops are the places where I have the most 'that wasn't 2 metres!' encounters. (said in my head - not out loud, yet).

And even with social distancing, in a shop you are breathing in air that has been breathed out by every customer that has entered that day. And, possibly wrongly, I think that big supermarkets probably have air handling and ventilation that pumps fresh air though the shop, but independent corner shops do not.

MarieQueenofScots · 27/04/2020 11:54

Normally (i.e. non-Coronavirus conditions) I go once a week.

Now I go once a fortnight and supplement with a fruit/veg delivery.

ClientQ · 27/04/2020 11:56

Online delivery, every 7-10 days or so. I can go longer but start missing soft fruits/salad bits!

randomsabreuse · 27/04/2020 11:57

About every 6 days to stay topped up with fresh veg as kids are a bit fussy... Could probably stretch to 10 days but DH has been going on the way home from work - been in once a week so far. I'm not convinced by this as he keeps buying random cuts of meat as bargains but not thinking through accompaniments!

Ninkanink · 27/04/2020 11:58

We have enough bread to last 4 weeks, it’s just the milk that might run out, but if that happens we’ll probably just make do without for a week or so, or if we’re really desperate we’ll use the carton of Uht milk I’ve got in our store. Our aim is to get to 17/5 without doing another shop, and we should comfortably make that, but won’t have salads and fresh veg for the last week or so.

WombatChocolate · 27/04/2020 11:58

It's not exactly a lockdown is it, if people are going to the shop 3 or 4 times a week. It doesn't matter that it's only for 3 items most times, it is opening up the possibility of transmission and then returning the virus to multiple homes.

Why don't people organise themselves to go less frequently or don't you think that will help/is part of the current restrictions?

Randomschoolworker19 · 27/04/2020 11:59

I get my milk and bread delivered from Creamline.

I shop at Tesco once a fortnight (used to go once a week) and I get there around 9 PM just before closing so it's nice and quiet.

frillyfucks · 27/04/2020 11:59

About once a fortnight click and collect. I freeze milk and bread and defrost things as required. My shopping habits haven't really altered since lockdown - were farmers, we live remotely so have a big chest freezer. I was previously going to the shop in person but due to toddler and newborn I decided the risk was much lower by doing click and collect.

chocolicious · 27/04/2020 12:01

2 of us in the household.Do a click and collect shop very 8-10 days.

bellinisurge · 27/04/2020 12:01

Haven't been to the shops for over a month. Managed some click and collect at local supermarket and also local greengrocers delivers. We use a milkman anyway.
Husband finally been offered a delivery slot by the supermarket having received a message from them about a month ago saying they have put him on the vulnerable list - asthmatic and presumably the doctors surgery volunteered him for this because we didn't. .

WombatChocolate · 27/04/2020 12:01

I think people aren't prepared to alter their eating habits/shopping habits in reality.

People fancy something they haven't got, so pop out to get it. They could just wait until their weekly shop to avoid an unecessary journey.

Many people could plan their shopping more carefully when they go for their big shop to avoid at least 1 or 2 of the top-up shops. If people did this, the number of visits to the shops would be more than halved.

Out of interest, are people doing more top-up and little shops than they did 3 or 4 weeks ago? Are people becoming complacent? I think so.

LAlady · 27/04/2020 12:02

Big supermarket shop before the weekend, midweek shop for milk, bread etc on Tuesday at the local Tesco Express. 4 adults.

Fairylillie · 27/04/2020 12:02

One big shop every two weeks. I'm putting half the bread and milk in the freezer for the second week. Just trying to avoid going to the shops as much as possible. Everything else we buy online or go without.

fortyfifty · 27/04/2020 12:02

I do a supermarket shop once per fortnight - at a quiet time. I then get other bits from local shops every few days as needed. If I do go to a local shop for a top-up, I try to anticipate need for a few days and grab an armful of things so that I get as much as I can in one go, rather than pop in as frequently as I did before the pandemic.
