Stop going out!

Watching today's update and the cars usage graph shows that people are starting to drive for non-essential journeys again.

WHY?

Why can't people just stay at home?! Stop driving around! I see people shopping twice a week or more, regularly. WHY?!

Just had a look and people are using pathetic excuses, such as not getting supermarket delivery slots, but that doesn't explain why they need to go out twice a week to the shops or more.

They're just bored.

Because I don’t qualify for any help apart from £23.44 UC so I go out to work which involves shopping for 5 different families.
How I’d love to be enjoying the sunshine at home but I have to keep myself alive & will continue to do so

Oh & I live in a room in a shared house. I have 1 shelf in the fridge & 1/2 a shelf in the freezer so I have to shop more frequently for myself

I think people are starting to take matters into their own hands. The government refusing to talk about future plans in terms of easing restrictions has left a lot of people feeling pretty hopeless. This way of life can't go on indefinitely.

Well I don't drive, so this may not be applicable, but because I don't drive I need to shop 2/3 times a week. Maybe more if I have to get heavy stuff like dog food and laundry stuff. I walk because I can and we've been asked to stay off public transport, and it's been reduced a lot.
Even if I could get an online delivery slot, I wouldn't feel right using it because I have an alternative. I haven't even tried.
I didn't get chance to get a big shop before lockdown, so literally buying and using.

Because I'm shopping for 3 families and it's not possible to do it all in one go. Also doing prescription pick ups. Mind your beeswax and stop staring out your window. How on earth do you know why people are going out and where they're going?

We aren't driving at the moment but we do go out daily for a long walk. If the long takes us past a shop which is open we often pop in and get some bits and pieces. We practice social distancing while we're out and about. I think if you're allowed it's not a problem to be out, there's a lot of martyrdom on Mumsnet, some people seem to think they'll escape the virus if they live as miserably as possible.

We will be using our car twice tomorrow with reasonable excuse. Ds has been in a car twice every day this week to go to school. Dh has made several essential work related journeys.

Not half as bored as you, considering how much attention you are paying to other people.

There are a various reasons why people are shopping more than once a week. A) They are allowed to do so.

B) They have limited fridge/freezer/cupboard space

C) Some shops are still poorly stocked which can mean more than one trip to get your shopping.

D) They can't carry a week's shopping. I have various disabilities including nerve damage to my hands and arms and I can carry very little at a time and there's not a chance in hell I could carry a week's shopping so I have to go 2-3 times a week.

E) They want to and you are not the bloody shopping police.

I think not going shopping so that you have no food would be even more stupid.

We shop a couple of times a week. 1. for our family food shop. 2. my dads shop (hes in vulnerable cat). 3. Our local foodbank - shop and drop off. 4. Shop for two elderly neighbours and drop off. 5. Prescription pick up for 7! neighbours. If you dont know where people are going or why, dont judge them. As long as theyre keeping their distance what is the problem? People need supplies. If its any consolation to you my children havent been in the car for 6 weeks.

My fridge-freezer is an under-counter one therefore the freezer bit is tiny. In there I have fitted five pre-prepared meals (in case I have to self-isolate), a bag of scampi bites, and a tray of meatballs. It is full. Therefore I have to buy fresh food more than once a week as milk etc. does not last a week.

To (partially) compensate for loss of overtime, I now cycle to work instead of driving. Therefore the amount I can carry is limited. I do however try to fit food shopping around my work roster to avoid going out more often than I have to.

We sometimes have to go twice. No delivery slots and try as we might our veggies go off before a week, usually last 3 days.
Any suggestions and we'll go out less.

About 10 million people are still going to work, maybe not everyday, work patterns have shifted. People need to eat, Friday seems a popular day to go. Some journeys are necessary.

The police have advised that people can drive to exercise, B&Q is open. Some journeys are less necessary.

The more people choose to go out, the more risk there is to people who have to go out.

I don't think the OP is referring to those of you who need to go out more frequently. She's thinking about the people who could well remain home but go out either because they don't care about the rules or because they're bored. There will be a significant number in this category, and they're pointlessly putting us all in danger.

We go out about twice for shopping and I would go more if I needed to and also more people may be back at work as workplaces sort out their social distancing.
