Watching today's update and the cars usage graph shows that people are starting to drive for non-essential journeys again.

WHY?

Why can't people just stay at home?! Stop driving around! I see people shopping twice a week or more, regularly. WHY?!

OP posts:

Some people treat lockdown as some kind of competition, who's doing lockdown better?? Is it whoever can make their shop last the longest? I'm just living off tins of food I bought 6 months ago. Do I win? Ten points to the person who lived without onions for a week!

BirdieFriendReturns · 24/04/2020 18:27

Am I allowed to go to Sainsbury’s to pick up sanitary towels even though DH yesterday? Or should I make my own from leaves?

wanderings · 24/04/2020 18:29

Yawn. These threads have been done to death now. It's really telling that three weeks ago, most of the replies would have been "I agree, OP, all those selfish arseholes killing everybody" by all those polishing their haloes; and it's a very different tone now.

imsooverthisdrama · 24/04/2020 18:29

WHY shop twice a week when we're supposed to do essential journeys only??
I didn't realise there was a time limit on how often you shop . If you need to shop once a month or every other day then do so be it . Ffs has this not been done to death .

AlphaJura · 24/04/2020 18:33

I find myself going to the shops frequently. I never go more than once a day but there are 5 of us and a cat in our family including a toddler in nappies who drinks quite a bit of milk and a pre teen and teen who are off school and are hungry all time. I try to buy enough to last more than 2 days but the fresh stuff just goes! Dp hardly ever leaves the house unless he needs to go to work and the dcs don't unless they are going for a walk with me. I definitely don't go to the shops because I'm bored (it's a risk and a faff at the moment) and I don't visit others or do anything unecessary.

tigger1001 · 24/04/2020 18:33

Op, not everyone has your life and some very well might have to do things differently to you.

More and more businesses are starting to find ways to open safely so there might be more workers on the road than in previous weeks.

Some might criticise these doing a shop once a week and say why not once per month? Others might realise there isn't a one fits all solution to shopping.

Not everyone can do a big shop once a week. Some might only have a small freezer. Some might not drive. Maybe the shop didn't have what was needed so another trip was needed. There are a number of different reasons as to why someone does their shopping differently to you. Each as valid as your methods of shopping.

I seriously worry about people's ability for critical thinking.

beautifulstranger101 · 24/04/2020 18:34

*People are not just going to work, they're going shopping and even visiting people.

Just shows how stupid the British public is*

How on earth could you possibly know this unless you are quizzing every single person you see? People are ALLOWED to go fcking shopping

Good grief- this post is stupid

AlphaJura · 24/04/2020 18:35

Oh yes and I've only got a small counter top fridge and same size freezer underneath the counter.

Aesopfable · 24/04/2020 18:36

It is not the Easter holidays anymore. People might not have been able to go away but many still took time off work. Employers were probably encouraging this too.

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 18:37

Hopefully OP will confess her parody or address these explanations.

I’ll have a look when I get back from my 5 miles, during which I might have to stop for a drink of water.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 24/04/2020 18:38

You arent that bright yourself, are you OP?

ElizaCrouch · 24/04/2020 18:39

I shop twice a week. Sorry that bothers you so much.

copycopypaste · 24/04/2020 18:39

My dh who's a truck driver (delivering medical supplies) he said that today, he had to slow down to 40mph in the M1 due to congestion. He said it's been so much busier since Easter.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/04/2020 18:42

I see people shopping twice a week or more, regularly. WHY?!

I went to my local shop yesterday. I was allowed to buy ONE loaf of bread and one carton of milk. As a family of three adults (including autistic DS who really only drinks milk) that doesn’t last very long. I am also shopping for an elderly neighbour so have to go again if he wants milk and/or bread. Some days they allow two cartons of milk but it seems pretty random.

supersop60 · 24/04/2020 18:43

Since we are all at home, we are eating more. DC not at school for lunch, DP and I wfh so having lunch at home. That's 20 more meals per week, so we need MORE stuff than usual.
Also, as mentioned by pp - there was never a once-a-week rule. It was "as infrequently as possible".

PickAChew · 24/04/2020 18:44

No! We are allowed out for certain purposes and it's payday, this week, for a lot of people so shops will be busier.

And I veill buy the food my family needs, when I need to buy it. Even shopping twice a week my autistic DS1 isn't getting any lunch a few days of the week because I can't get the one thing he'll accept that is still available in sufficient quantity.

smokescreen · 24/04/2020 18:45

Goodness @Fratercula it's not prison

justasking111 · 24/04/2020 18:46

I do not have a delivery slot because I am not in a shielded group, why would I take a slot away from someone that really needs it. That to me is sensible.

There are going to be some folk who when we do start to relax restrictions and they can go out will be beyond anxious. I do worry about their mental health.

LesLavandes · 24/04/2020 18:47

I live Brighton and there is way more traffic on roads this week

OhMsBeliever · 24/04/2020 18:49

I went out twice yesterday. In my car. I did the shopping. Then I came home because I have had my period and flooded so needed to change my clothes. Lovely.

I then went back out to drop off some shopping for a friend who can't get online orders but can't drive so can't get tons of shopping and wanted some stuff her nearest supermarket didn't have.

Is that a good enough excuse?

There are 6 of us in the house and I buy a couple of loaves of bread but they only last a few days. I don't have room in the freezer to buy more so I usually pop to the local shop midweek to get another couple of loaves to see us through.

I know, bread isn't essential. But we'd still need to eat something for lunch and I still wouldn't have room for it in the fridge/freezer. Or be able to buy enough tins etc to last a week. Solve this conundrum. 🤔

Spikeyball · 24/04/2020 18:51

When we drove ds to school which is quite a long drive, this week it did seem busier than before the holiday but the noticeable increase was in small business vans. I think it is largely businesses re opening. The majority of vehicles on the road were commercial vehicles

Mysocalledlifexx · 24/04/2020 18:51

My DH goes to 2 shops a week we have a big family and he does my mums shopping, some of us do need to go out. Me and the kids havent been out tho. We need food we go through alot in 1 week

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 24/04/2020 18:53

Lots of people are justifying why they're going out with sensible reasons but for the most part those reasons won't have changed in the past few weeks so wouldn't account for INCREASED car usage.

peppermintcapsules · 24/04/2020 18:53

Apt username Hmm.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/04/2020 18:53

My dad's just rang to say he's running out of milk and there's none in the village shop Is it ok if I pop some that I have in freezer up to him OP? I promise I'll be as quick as I can and I won't talk to strangers.
