Posters who want lockdown lifted

DianaT1969 · 24/04/2020 13:15

I'm seeing an increase in threads where the poster is impatient for exact details of an exit strategy (even though we can all imagine what it will involve - phased re-opening of some stores and businesses etc,,). Plus we're hearing the usual cries of lockdown is hurting society more than it's helping.
Spain saw a spike in new infections today - the highest since their peak 3 weeks ago. To these posters I'd like to ask what your thread titles will be during our spikes in infections and deaths after this lockdown?
What I'm really getting at is that you don't seem to understand that we're in this for the long haul. There is no quick fix, back to normal.

My GP is doing phone consultations. They then send any prescription to the chemist. I think if its really serious then they would be seen at the surgery or referred to the hospital?

I know someone who got through fairly quickly, the GP rang back within an hour and a prescription was sent to a local chemist (antibiotics or something like that)

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/04/2020 19:04

Pretty sure cantory. My mum works at the surgery.

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/04/2020 19:05

They are referring to the hospital if really serious.

collateralmadanage · 24/04/2020 19:06

I have found my doctor more efficient. Uploaded photo. Prescription at the chemist that afternoon.

cantory · 24/04/2020 19:17

I hope we can continue to do that after lock down. Far better.

MRex · 24/04/2020 19:20

I would presume two things:

  1. Information from countries that have each eased different restrictions and are at slightly different stages of their lockdown journey will be looked at in deciding what we should do in the UK. The fact that Scotland and Wales have indications already suggests that enough is just about known (but wouldn't have been known 2 weeks ago). So...
  2. They are waiting for Boris to restart work on Monday to confirm the exit strategy, the date was so close and it saves a bunch of questions when he does get back about whether he agrees or not with every fine point of detail.
MsSafina · 24/04/2020 19:24

There won't be any money from taxes to fund the NHS eventually. As for Virgin Airlines and a few other airlines going bust, can't say I care. Likewise with clothing retailers. Too many of them anyway.

MsSafina · 24/04/2020 19:27

There's no exit strategy. This is going to last a long time and if accounts are to be believed there are several different mutations of this disease so a vaccine is going to be very difficult.

cantory · 24/04/2020 19:32

@mssafina There have been recessions before and we had an NHS.
The economy will recover.

cantory · 24/04/2020 19:33

And it is not unusual for viruses to mutate. No reason not to have a vaccine, but it may need updated every so often.

Quartz2208 · 24/04/2020 19:38

There is a difference between an exit strategy to normal life which needs a lot of time and the fact that actually yes this is going to take time so we need an exit strategy from this level of lockdown which simply isnt sustainable

THe mutations wont necessarily make a vaccine difficult (its has mutated less than seasonal flu) just it may need to be a seasonal vaccine

2beautifulbabs · 24/04/2020 19:49

I want out of lockdown because this isn't sustainable long haul.

The economy can not afford for everyone to stay locked in doors for more than tops another month.

Education is another massive factor how long do children young adults suffer the effects of this lockdown on vital learning

I think social distancing still needs to be maintained around shops ban on large gatherings but I do think we should be allowed to visit loved ones be able to go out more than once a day for exercise.

Also you have to look at those who are suffering in silence right now because of this lockdown suicides that have happened domestic violence and child abuse that is currently happening right now but no one is aware or able to help these vulnerable people

It has to come down to choice we are already aware this is going to be with us right through to next year even we are also not sure if there will be a vaccine to help treat this

Also major surgeries and treatments have been put on hold risking the most vulnerable because of this lockdown and I imagine it's just as upsetting to their loved ones knowing they may end up losing a close family member that could have been saved had the treatment surgery gone ahead as planned

The longer this goes on the more it feels like hell

Like most I have my own struggles my DS has learning difficulties speech delay trying to get him assessed for autism which has all been put on hold due to lockdown and this virus and he's due to start nursery in September and I'm scared now what this will do for him it's going to have a massive knock on effect for everyone trying to pick up where we all left off it's going to take months maybe even years to get back to some form of normality

cantory · 24/04/2020 19:52

Everyone is not locked in doors. A lot of people are still going out to work or working from home. 3.2 million workers are furloughed. They are the ones any removal of lock down would aim to get back to work.
Some will be made unemployed when furlough ends. So you are maybe talking about getting 2 million people back to work?

cantory · 24/04/2020 19:54

Also we are being told medical treatment and surgeries that are not happening are because there are medics not available. Ending lock down will not change that. Or because it is more risky for people to come into hospital and risk getting covid 19 than to delay treatment. There is now talk of setting aside some hospitals for urgent treatments that will not treat covid 19 patients.

GoldenOmber · 24/04/2020 20:03

It's a fluid thing depending on what's needed at a certain point in the timeline of the epidemic and this was explained to us right from the start.

Was it, though? On this thread alone we've got people who think that the government has been very clear that lockdown is just to create more NHS capacity because we're all going to get the virus at some point, people who think the government has been very clear that it's always planned to have rolling on/off lockdowns to stop everyone getting the virus, people who think the government has been very clear that it has an exit strategy, people who think the government has been very clear that it isn't appropriate to set out an exit strategy...

The idea of rolling on/off lockdowns was set out in the Imperial College paper that came out mid-March and terrified lots of us (rightly so). It was not a plan the government set out as "right, everybody, we're all going to spend 2/3 of the next year or so in intermittent lockdown." It didn't feature mass testing/contact tracing, which is the government's current plan, which I'm guessing the government thinks will be an alternative to indefinite on-off lockdown as other governments do.

I'm glad they're now talking about contact tracing as a real concrete plan. I wish they'd done that sooner and it didn't feel like it had to be pestered out of them by lobby journalists.

GoldenOmber · 24/04/2020 20:05

I think the degree of confusion about what 'lockdown' is and what 'social distancing' is and what the government is actually planning is going to make it increasingly hard to maintain the current level of lockdown. People will put up with a lot if they know it's short-term and have faith that there's a plan to get out of it to somewhere better. But if they start thinking it's going to be like this indefinitely and don't have anything to look forward to, they'll just think "well fuck it, then, I'm going to go and see my mum."

cantory · 24/04/2020 20:09

I think you are right, and that will increase deaths.

Cantata · 24/04/2020 20:12

But, but Save The NHS. Brilliant slogan by Dom Cummings ensuring obedience.

Mynydd · 24/04/2020 20:41

So are all of you our visiting friends and having bbqs with extended family then?? All of this 'you can't keep us in forever, you lock down if you want to I'm going out' is a nonsense. Have a look at what's happening to the US state of Georgia. They've lifted restrictions far too soon. Who wants to guess what happens next?

Feelings matter, but not enough to change the course of this I'm afraid. That does not mean I want to be locked down for 18 months, nor am I under any illusion that we will be. However economies rebound, children are resilient, and on this one I'm trusting the experts. You can foam and froth but the current situation is what it is and you just have to get on with it

GoldenOmber · 24/04/2020 20:50

So are all of you our visiting friends and having bbqs with extended family then??

No, of course not. And thinking the government could be doing a better job of comms here is really not foaming and frothing.

Frompcat · 24/04/2020 20:51

So are all of you our visiting friends and having bbqs with extended family then

No, but I have seen my mum and my sister who are also isolating (and live together).

collateralmadanage · 24/04/2020 21:01

Finally @Mynydd and @cantory

Finally people with sense

Bathroom12345 · 24/04/2020 21:02

There is no routine anything around here. No blood tests, smear tests e5c. All cancelled and of course just phone appointments.

lljkk · 24/04/2020 21:09

I have... 6? relatives in Georgia. 7 if I count cousin's wife.
I think they will be ok. They are genuine bible-thumpers so probably happy to accept their fate.

So are all of you our visiting friends and having bbqs with extended family then??

Can't... they're in Georgia. Grin
