Up to £625 and expenses paid.

It’s a no from me!

£235 in Bristol.
I'd honestly love to say I would but I just can't being myself to. It may make me selfish but I'm a worrier at the best of times and I think the anxiety would be worse than any possible side effects.

MRex · 22/04/2020 09:16

DH will apply when they ask for asthma patients. I'm breastfeeding and have some health issues, so I can't, but I'd apply if the health issues were sorted out or were applicable for their criteria.

Vitaceae · 22/04/2020 09:17

DH got a text from his GP recently asking if he wanted to take part. He said no. It's too soon & too risky imo. He didn't want to be a guinea pig.

mynameiscalypso · 22/04/2020 09:17

I tried but I screened out because you need to be able to drive (or have someone drive you) to appointments. You can't take public transport or a taxi which does make sense but is a real pain, especially in London.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/04/2020 09:29

@EdwinaMay I completely agree. If the UK could be the first to find a vaccine that worked that would make my bloody day!!

Eeyoresstickhouse · 22/04/2020 09:46

I would but I am just out of catchment area for the local one.

It is a safe vaccine, and the "placebo" vaccine is a widely used vaccine anyway.

How do you think they make advances with these things if no one volunteers?

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 22/04/2020 10:03

Why is there a payment for it? Genuinely curious, why not just sell as it being the first few lucky to get it. I’m excited by a vaccine, hoping so much that it’s the right one and we can get on with dealing with this.

PatienceVirtue · 22/04/2020 10:04

I've just signed in. Feel quite elated even though it's highly unlikely that I'll be called upon. Would give the money to a charity that's been affected by all this (that'll be all of them then).

I've been feeling so useless that I feel grateful for the opportunity (potentially) to do something of some value.

PilatesPeach · 22/04/2020 10:05

yes I would if in my area

millymaple · 22/04/2020 10:12

Not necessarily ‘lucky few’ to get it first - it’s risky and also you may get the placebo. Think it’s quite hard to entice people without a payment probably

Granted that was a drug trial and not a vaccine trial but still.

The payment is for time and expenses only (bearing in mind that you have to return several times over the next 6 months for further blood tests). If you didn’t pay at all then it would be quite a big ask, especially for people with jobs or care responsibilities: you’d be restricting your pool to people who could afford the time and travel without recompense.

nether · 22/04/2020 10:40

"Why is there a payment for it? Genuinely curious, why not just sell as it being the first few lucky to get it"

a) because it might not work
b) because you might be in the control group which gets the placebo shot
c) because it takes quite a bit of your time (repeat appointments, some lengthy
d) to induce people to allow into their body something which, although it has passed animal modelling and there is no reason to think would be harmful, has a unknown side effect profile

It is however likely that they will be tested for COVID, both immediately on developing any symptoms and alsinperioducally during the trial. And some people might see that as a benefit

fairydustandpixies · 22/04/2020 10:45

I would but it's not in my area.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 22/04/2020 10:46

Yes I’ll be interested to see the results of my COVID antibody test if I get into the trial (no particular reason to think I’ve had it). They also give you a reasonably thorough medical workup to start off with, which you might see as a benefit.

happyandsingle · 22/04/2020 11:00

The pay is rubbish considering the time commitments.
I applied for flu camp, granted you have to stay in their accommodation for a week but you get £4000 for that and then after the week your done with.
I know it's not just about money but I think ppl should be compensated reasonably for their troubles.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/04/2020 11:01

@happy these trials are oversubscribed. People don’t want to die so are happy to be inconvenienced. Plus lots of people have fuck all else to do right now!

Grobagsforever · 22/04/2020 11:02

If I wasn't a lone parent I'd do it in heartbeat for free. A great chance to make my life count.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/04/2020 11:04

I would but I'm a single parent and a keyworker so can't.

Good luck to those that do.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 22/04/2020 11:07

Flu camp is an entire week spent away from home where they deliberately infect you with a fairly serious disease. The plan with a vaccine trial is for nobody to get sick who wouldn’t otherwise have got sick, and ideally for fewer people to get sick.

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 22/04/2020 11:38

Yes that’s why I question it @millymaple, if there’s risk then that is a piss poor amount of money to pay someone.

timeforawine · 22/04/2020 11:39

I would but i'm in Yorkshire so too far

VivaLeBeaver · 22/04/2020 11:47

I would, even without the payment. Not in my area though.

Abraid2 · 22/04/2020 11:49

A year too old ☹️

TinyTear · 24/04/2020 08:25

I just signed up, i wonder if i will be called in?
