The “I just had a sit down in the park with crisps” brigade

You are the problem. The rules are simple. Go out and exercise and then go home. Just that, nothing more than that.

To be fair then problem is actually bigger than that and has been brewing for years as we increasingly become a country with rules but almost everyone has an excuse for why that rule shouldn’t apply to them/their child/family.

I'm so glad the guidance came out and seems to have been written by someone with a bit of common sense. Can almost feel the eye rolling of course you can buy non essentials (wine) with your shop! Sit on the grass eat your crisps. Walk your dog as necessary. Just stay away from others and try and keep journeys to a minimum.

Self imposed misery isn't a cure. My lockdown experience isn't awful (rural, big garden, surrounded by fields) but I'm sure if I followed all the made up rules I should keep everyone locked inside doling out the plain pasta. We should all be making the best we can of it whilst maintaining social distancing.

It's worrying how quick people are to turn on their neighbours, friends and family. It really demonstrates how easily a democracy could slide into an Orwellian nightmare.

Frompcat · 21/04/2020 10:37

OP just wanted a pile on and is disappointed they haven't got it.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 21/04/2020 10:38

What alec just said

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 21/04/2020 10:38

Oh bloody hell....i typed as fast as i could

GlummyMcGlummerson · 21/04/2020 10:38

I feel embarrassed for those saying "what if everyone sat down on a bench". Well numpty it's fine as long as they're social distancing.

AnneOfCloves · 21/04/2020 10:38

I have taken one walk other than going to the shops in 5 weeks. DP dropped me at the far end of the local woods and I walked home. I took an apple with me.

I spent 3 hours out there, very little of it walking. Most of the first hour was spent sitting on a log listening to the birds and watching the wildlife. I saw two people with dogs at the other side of the ravine, about 400m away in that time.
The rest of the time I walked for 10 minutes and rested for 5 minutes on my way home (I have mobility issues).

According to the OP I am the problem

Give your head a wobble. That time alone with nature did me the world of good, and put no one at risk of anything.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 10:38

I totally agree with you that a good proportion of the current young and children have grown up with hardly any discipline

It’s becoming obvious that there were many facists lying in wait to bust out the jackboots in the name of ‘discipline’. They feel like their ship has come in right now. Hmm

so naturally any type of instruction is going to make them stamp their tiny feet and say 'no'!

If the ‘instruction’ takes the form of bollocks the OP has made up in his head then obviously they will reject it. Thankfully they’re not cowed and stupid.

WilburIsSomePig · 21/04/2020 10:39

OP just wanted a pile on and is disappointed they haven't got it.

Yep. How embarrassing. I doubt they'll be back.

feelingverylazytoday · 21/04/2020 10:40

The fact that we don't have a strict lockdown like Italy and Spain (for example) seems to really piss some people off.
The fact is, there's no real need to ban exercise outdoors, or even sitting outdoors, as long as the rules of social distancing and hygiene are observed. I'm glad our government is being sensible about this, I think it is one thing they've got right.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 21/04/2020 10:40

According to the OP I am the problem*

No youre ok

I think its just crisp eaters that are the problem

misskatamari · 21/04/2020 10:42

Its interesting the guidance says you can maybe exercise more than once a day. I've got young children, so days that I take them out, I obviously haven't been going out again, but while exercise for them, it's not particularly exercise like for me. It's good to know it wouldn't be wholly unreasonable for me to have my own walk/jog later in the day (I probably won't, but it's good to know it's an option).

wildcherries · 21/04/2020 10:42

YABsoU. I'm disabled but need exercise. I need to sit down to rest (every so) often on my exercise walk.

FacesLookUgly · 21/04/2020 10:46

It absolutely is an option @misskatamari

The law puts no limits on it and the police guidelines place "Exercising more than once per day" in the 'likely to be reasonable' category.

SpillTheTea · 21/04/2020 10:48

Sitting down for 2 seconds is hardly an issue. What's the point of starting yet another judgemental and self-righteous thread? Get a life and mind your own business.

nettie434 · 21/04/2020 10:49

Totally agree about the higher risks posed by lack of immigration controls on air passengers, crowded tube passengers and the lack of PPE for health and care workers than a crisp eater sitting on a bench.

It can't be said too often that a packet of crisps is not much of a picnic.

Full house bingo here for posters wanting an opportunity to criticise crisps, obesity, pregnant women and people with a disability or other reasons for needing to sit down, eating in public, and applying their own version of government guidance all in one go.

Dragonsanddinosaurs · 21/04/2020 10:49

As far as I am aware, the lock down is working, so in that respect there isn't a problem. So it seems all those people daring to sit on a bench and eat crisps aren't actually causing a problem after all.

Healthyandhappy · 21/04/2020 10:50

Also have u seen the thread saying hospitals are empty lockdown needs to end

oralengineer · 21/04/2020 10:51

Those of us who understand natural selection are happy for those who don’t to suffer the consequences of unnecessary contact.

Tootletum · 21/04/2020 10:51

Bog off. You're probably in the going to the shops every day brigade, far bigger risk.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 21/04/2020 10:54

Are the disabled/diabetic really supposed to exercise solely by walking round and round their living rooms? What about the risk to their mental health?

That's exactly what those of us shielding are expected not do. We're just expected to manage our mental.health.

Those of you promoting the idea of sitting on a bench and eating crisps, satsumas etc are you not concerned about catching the virus? Whether you are allowed to do it or not it is most definitely a way to contract the virus, without a doubt. You are touching a surface that many other people will have touched, the bench, and then touching your face and mouth with unwashed hands, whilst eating.

Does that not concern any of you?

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 10:54

Where’s the ‘unnecessary contact’ in sitting on a bench by yourself? Confused

Floatyboat · 21/04/2020 10:55

Having a rest during interval training etc is obviously fine. But who on earth stops to eat a packet of crisps whilst exercising? What a strange thing to do and it does suggest the motivation is more around having a pleasant time than exercising.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 10:55

You are touching a surface that many other people will have touched, the bench, and then touching your face and mouth with unwashed hands, whilst eating.

I’m perfectly capable of sitting on an empty bench without touching it with my hands.

I expect most people are.

lazylinguist · 21/04/2020 10:56

Haven't rtft, but this:

Well, pack of crisps kind of defeat the exercise bit, doesn't it.

is an astoundingly dimwitted comment. Firstly, exercise has various huge benefits which have nothing to do with weight loss. Secondly, no. One packet of crisps does not automatically undo all the weightloss-aiding effects of an exercise regime. It depends entirely on what else the person eats and how much exercise they do etc.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 10:56

What a strange thing to do and it does suggest the motivation is more around having a pleasant time than exercising.

Perhaps it’s both. Mind blowing, huh?
