The “I just had a sit down in the park with crisps” brigade

You are the problem. The rules are simple. Go out and exercise and then go home. Just that, nothing more than that.

To be fair then problem is actually bigger than that and has been brewing for years as we increasingly become a country with rules but almost everyone has an excuse for why that rule shouldn’t apply to them/their child/family.

I am pregnant (third trimester) and if I’m to get any exercise, yes occasionally I will need to sit down and eat a satsuma/have a few sips of water/rest my hips before I carry on walking. This wouldn’t be the case before pregnancy

Same here.

rookiemere · 21/04/2020 08:15

Oh for goodness sake. I made a filled roll and ate it on the bench at the top of the hill when out on a recent walk ( although I did check no one else around). I was out for over an hour, it was around lunch and I have low blood sugar.

The judgement here is unbelievable, it seems like a thinly veiled opportunity to have a go at people who don't exercise and eat crisps - it is actually possible to eat crisps and enjoy exercise as well it's not binary - rather than a coronavirus related matter.

TabbyMumz · 21/04/2020 08:15

The police have confirmed that you are allowed to take a rest on a bench during exercise. They've even said you can sit and have lunch, and then carry on with your exercise.

Makeitgoaway · 21/04/2020 08:15

ImHappyHopeYoureHappyToo

"Oh yeah, Every fekker's got a reason to be out and about. The longer we take the piss, the longer this is going to last."

Explain this to me. Why does breaking rules make it last longer? In fact the exact opposite is true. More cases, at the same time get it over with quicker. Spreading it out, protects the NHS and reduces number of deaths due to inadequate medical assistance but it makes it last longer.

Nowhere has any expert ever told you that lockdown makes the pandemic shorter and yet people are determined to keep insisting it does.

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 21/04/2020 08:16

Read the rules and guidelines.

Also, I walk with my mum who has mobility issues so needs to sit and rest every so often. She has her own walker for this btw.

Stop being so judgemental.

TheStuffWasBad · 21/04/2020 08:16

You are the problem

Wow. No. The lack of it being taken seriously in the early stages by our government is WAY more of a problem than people sitting for a few minutes with a bag of crisps.

And I'm deviant on the side of people should not take the piss in this situation. But your are being overdramatic.

Happyspud · 21/04/2020 08:17

Two types here that make me goHmm

The ones who think ‘right, we’re now allowed to eat crisps on our walk so I’m packing a bag of crisps and a bottle of water’.

And the ones who want to cite ‘the rules’ to stop people eating their ‘government endorsed bag of crisps’.

You’re both overthinking this.

Tellmetruth4 · 21/04/2020 08:17

Am I the only one who imagines people who say ‘brigade’ folding their arms with a triumphant look on their face as though they’ve ended the argument? I lose interest immediately when that put down is trotted out.

5foot5 · 21/04/2020 08:18

To be fair then problem is actually bigger than that and has been brewing for years as we increasingly become a country with rules but almost everyone has an excuse for why that rule shouldn’t apply to them/their child/family.

It is unclear from this which bit you see as the problem. Is it that we have, in your view, "increasingly become a country with rules" or that, again in your view, "everyone has an excuse why they don't apply"

Personally I think the former would be more a cause for concern.

Obviously in this current crisis we must expect many of our personal freedoms to be put aside for the greater good. But in general I don't really approve of people's lives being over regulated, some common sense must be allowed to apply. I suspect we will disagree on that.

saraclara · 21/04/2020 08:18

People with this sort of thinking are starting to worry me more than the virus.

Read the guidance. Use your thinking shills. Use logic.
Peoole need to walk and be outside in the sun in order for their bodies to be primed to fight this virus. Siitting briefly to rest, have a drink or a snack is allowed, and it comes at no risk to anyone.

Actually making an OP with such flawed logic and some misplaced authoritarianism is odd.

onanothertrain · 21/04/2020 08:19

It has been confirmed that it is OK to rest and have a snack. Would you be so judgy if they were eating an apple? These threads are getting ridiculous.

user1471468296 · 21/04/2020 08:20

I have a toddler, and it's a choice between exercising him and exercising me. If I go out to get sufficient exercise for me, yes we'll stop and have a potter on some grass and some breadsticks so he is happy to stay out longer. We also stop and feed the ducks. Everyone round here does, but is staying more like 6m away than 2m. Many times we see barely anyone and are tens of metres apart. Not everyone lives in a densely populated area of the south east - it is a world away going for a walk in the Highlands or Scottish Borders than it is in busy London parks.

Laiste · 21/04/2020 08:21

The longer we take the piss, the longer this is going to last.

Confused I hear this so often. Like they everyone is hiding till it's gone away. Do people think that when we lift lockdown the virus will miraculously have vanished?

It's such a basic misunderstanding of what's going on. Ironically these are the same people braying about what other people are doing.

dottiedodah · 21/04/2020 08:21

Well I am going for a walk and need to sit down for a few minutes to rest! Presuming we are not living in Eastern Germany pre destruction of the Berlin wall ,Then I assume this is permitted .Some of us have a bandaged leg/sore ankle and need to rest ,but also exercise! There is a difference between someone with a water bottle and packet of Cheddars and a family with a full blown picnic!,

Makeitgoaway · 21/04/2020 08:22

We need people to question the rules (all rules) and those who aim to be over zealous in their enforcement, surely history teaches us that.

We saw early on that the police in some areas went way overboard and had to be reined back. Were the people who questioned their actions wrong? What happens when next time they're being over enthusiastic in their application of stop and search powers? Wrong to question that too?

JasonPollack · 21/04/2020 08:22

I don't think you understand the guidelines. Also you sound like a fascist. Have a Biscuit

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 08:23

Oh fgs OP.

Sitting on a park bench eating crisps is ...

Not spreading CV
Not against the rules
Probably a little bit of lift for people at a very difficult time.

Are you always this much of a self appointed prefect?

okiedokieme · 21/04/2020 08:23

I think they need to properly nip this in the bud, having a full picnic sitting on the grass is harming nobody - the government need to help us by allowing safe fun things to do this summer. They need reopen garden centres so that people can grow things (another healthy thing for kids to do) and allow small shops to open to help sole traders - none of these will significantly affect transmission of the virus but will help mental wellbeing a lot

Frangipanini · 21/04/2020 08:25

Going out for a walk to help with your MH and sitting on a park bench to finish off your crisps, at least 2 metres away from everyone else

versus

Standing in a long queue for ages and then picking things off a shelf that have gone through about 5 pairs of hands in the last 24 hours and sat on a shelf everyone that day has touched.

Hmm
PineappleDanish · 21/04/2020 08:26

At least read the rules before you come on here telling people what they can and can't do

Come on, keep up. You should know there are the rules (the official ones) and the RULES which are the ones that Mumsnetters have pulled out of their own arse and which involve staying in a locked house for 6 months and eating dust and lentils.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 08:28

EVERYTHING okiedokie said.

People need a bit of safe release for their own sanity.

I’m sure the facists disagree Hmm

gandalf456 · 21/04/2020 08:28

Isn't this a TAAT and against the rules?

I can't get excited about this issue, tbh

DurhamDurham · 21/04/2020 08:29

You are the problem

HmmHmmHmm

I'll tell that to the old man we pass on a daily basis who has a rest on a bench near his home, he sits there for about half an hour in between walking and it's the only chance he gets to say hello to people. We give him a wide birth, keeping our distance but always say hello and ask him how he is. He's doing no harm whatsoever.

Honestly there's bigger things to think about than someone sat eating a bag of crisps. There's plane loads of people arriving everyday without being checked, there's packed tubes in London, house parties being broken up. They're much bigger problems.

acatcalledjohn · 21/04/2020 08:30

you are the problem

For eating a packet of crisps mid walk?

How the fuck does that transmit the virus? Please do enlighten us.

I went for a long-ish walk last night. I had a 5 min sit down halfway. Perhaps it was ok because I had no crisps so therefore the virus is less likely to transmit.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 08:31

Someone posted about the practice of scourging in the Middle Ages and how it peaked during plague times.

I swear this is what going on here. Ppl think they can scare off CV by living as grimly as possible.

That’s not how it works folks.
