The “I just had a sit down in the park with crisps” brigade

You are the problem. The rules are simple. Go out and exercise and then go home. Just that, nothing more than that.

To be fair then problem is actually bigger than that and has been brewing for years as we increasingly become a country with rules but almost everyone has an excuse for why that rule shouldn’t apply to them/their child/family.

Puffin I really don't understand your logic. My parents can't walk fast at all due to age and health issues- a gentle walk is as close to strenuous exercise as it gets,

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 11:56

If the government outlaws either a) eating outside or b) sitting on benches be sure to let us know OP.

In the meantime, we’ll all crack on.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/04/2020 11:57

On a purely infection control perspective it would be far less risk to all involved in the eating of crisps to wait until they return home to eat their after WASHING THEIR HANDS

Depends if you've been scrupulous about not touching anything, and if you've been nowhere near close enough to be breathed over.

I wonder how many people are taking and using hand gel?

We've got some in our rucksack, used it before eating a sandwich sat on a log with no one else around, even though we'd touched nothing. (We've got very good at no-hands stile and gate manoeuvres). We used to carry gel anyway in case we'd had to touch something mucky before lunch (eg lifting a muddy dachshund over a stile - he's not coming out on country walks with us now), or when I was doing conservation volunteering.

My guess is that if you're organised enough to take a bit of food, you're very likely to be carrying and using gel.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 11:57

Ignore hear, she’d have everyone under house arrest if she could.

JoeBidensDisintegratingBrain · 21/04/2020 11:58

All this talk of crisps is making me hungry.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 21/04/2020 11:58

Luckily, viral matter degrades in sunlight, so it's not really a very big risk. Especially if you don't touch the bench with your hands. You can wash your outdoor clothing when you come indoors, if you want (and wash hands of course), that should be sufficient to break any chain of transmission.

Yes, it breaks down over time. Not within minutes.

And everything else you've said does not apply to someone sitting on a bench and then eating food with their hands. Many people will be touching the bench with their hands, and then touching their faces. Whether they go home and wash their clothes is neither here nor there, though I bet a lot of them don't.

HavartiToSeeYou · 21/04/2020 12:01

G'wan wotchya have?

I know this wasn’t aimed at me, but yesterday on my hike I had a veggie sausage bap, a Linda Mcartney rosemary sausage fried in a little bit of chilli oil, on granary bread with rocket and hot mayo. With Lidl’s knock-off own brand Pringles, which are even dirtier and more deliciously fake tasting than regular Pringles.

And a latte with hazelnut syrup in a thermos.

AWryGiraffe · 21/04/2020 12:04

What about if you were daintily nibbling the crisps rather than stuffing them or shoving them in ones face? Will that help with the bum fomite issue?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/04/2020 12:04

Almost as good as a hot one in white bread with lots of butter and tomato sauce... droooooooooool. followed by crisps

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/04/2020 12:04

Oh WAIT! You did have crisps!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 21/04/2020 12:05

HavartiToSeeYou

Seriously, how many people use their hands to.hokd onto a seat whilst sitting down or standing up? Particularly people on here who are saying they can't walk for long without sitting down due to a mobility issue. It really is not s tiny number of people.

And why say "blithely sticking their hands in their mouths"? This is the very subject of the thread - people sitting on a bench and eating food with their hands.

LaurieMarlow

Take the piss out of me all you like but I'm not the one dishing out misleading and irresponsible advice.

If people want to sit on a bench and eat food then that's up to them. But they should know that there is a risk of contracting the virus by doing so.

Posters saying that it's fine, it can't be caught by doing this etc are misleading, irresponsible and giving dangerous advice.

So, poo poo me all you like but if you don't also pull up the posters giving dangerous and incorrect advice then you are part of the problem.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 12:05

I fucking love crisps.

Just saying.

HavartiToSeeYou · 21/04/2020 12:05

ALWAYS CRISPS.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 12:06

I'm not the one dishing out misleading and irresponsible advice.

Show us where it isn’t allowed.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/04/2020 12:07

The fact that some people are idiots should not restrict the liberties of those of us who've got more sense. We stopped sitting on benches well before 'lockdown' started even though we don't need to touch them.

If people are touching benches then of course they shouldn't be using uncleaned hands to eat with.

None of this is very difficult.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 21/04/2020 12:07

I agree with you OP but I also found that entire discussion quite enlightening from a class pov. There were so many posts that seemed to be teetering on saying 'there wasn't a blanket, folding chair or wicket picnic basket so it couldn't have been a picnic!'

Poetryinaction · 21/04/2020 12:08

Just don't lick the bench ok? Or cough on it.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 21/04/2020 12:08

My guess is that if you're organised enough to take a bit of food, you're very likely to be carrying and using gel.

Be interesting to find out. My guess is that most elderly people don't carry or use hand gel. My guess is also that people don't know how to use hand gel correctly either, much as most people didn't know how to wash their hands properly.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/04/2020 12:08

This thread was started by a troll from the crisp factories to make us all want crisps.

HavartiToSeeYou · 21/04/2020 12:08

Technically not sure if knock-off Pringles are legally allowed to use the word crisp. “Extruded potato-based snack product.”

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/04/2020 12:09

Were they invented by Douglas Adams?

swishthecat · 21/04/2020 12:10

I want a sausage bap now.

HavartiToSeeYou · 21/04/2020 12:11

Yes, quite possibly.

I moved house shortly before lockdown and now live a 3-minute walk from a Lidl. Oh!! What a Mecca of knock-off non brand name snack products that is.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 12:11

Pringles and (knock off pringles) are not crisps.

They are in their own, perfectly legitimate, snacking category.

Their unmistakeable fakeness is a big part of their charm.

joystir59 · 21/04/2020 12:12

The guidelines state it's OK to stop to eat and drink on a walk as long as you aren't having a picnic.
