In your opinion, when do you think the kids will be back at school?

I change my mind every day depending on what I read. It ranges anywhere between May and September.

I just wondered what others thought?

Oops no I've had corona-wine and see that I misread it. Apologies.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/04/2020 19:16

My DS travels an hour each way on school bus, and it is full. No chance of social distancing.

SuitedandBooted · 20/04/2020 19:16

After Half Term holiday.
Any longer will wreck too much of the economy.
I know several Independent schools are working up their online stuff furloughing etc with that in mind. It would be very difficult to keep state kids off if the private ones go back - I assume they could, as they are effectively private businesses

Keepdistance · 20/04/2020 19:18

I was reading about child covid symptoms and they 50% dont have fever. So we would potentially have to keep them off for any d&v or runny nose etc for the 14 days.

The issue with sharing classroom different days is cleaning. Imo they cant deep clean every day so the kids wiuldnt just pick it up from surfaces. (Or from the teacher).

I doubt it. If they didn’t have to follow the school closures that the rest of the country do, they wouldn’t have closed in the first place.

SuitedandBooted · 20/04/2020 19:26

Letseatgrandma

My kids Independent actually closed before the official government lockdown. I do take your point, but if there is a concerted push from schools, I think they will do it.

Letseatgrandma · 20/04/2020 19:29

Schools don’t make any decisions here. They are opened and closed as per government instruction.

gandalf456 · 20/04/2020 19:29

Indeed @PleasantVille but then there are people like me who've only thought about it since last night's debate in government and so has inadvertently scrolled past those threads.

steff13 · 20/04/2020 19:36

I'm in Ohio. Our governor announced today that they won't return to in-person school until the beginning of the next school year, which is mid-August. Their last day of school was March 13. Please sent wine and chocolate. Shock

DownWhichOfLate · 20/04/2020 19:42

Not until September. Otherwise the BBC wouldn’t have bothered putting together a 14 week programme: www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2020/education-teachers

@Piggywaspushed

Ha! I don like the simple flower gesture. The meadows were a bit much Smile

Pomegranatepompom · 20/04/2020 19:44

Chocolateconcretepinkcustard · 20/04/2020 19:45

Surely if the government knew for a fact it would be September, they'd just tell us ffs?

Piggywaspushed · 20/04/2020 19:52

I don't have the IT skills for a whole meadow, fear not!

Letseatgrandma · 20/04/2020 20:01

I think it’s about managing expectations. If they told people on April 20th that schools wouldn’t reopen until September 5th, people would spend 5 months moaning.

I expect they’ll have this 3 week lockdown, then announce another one, then if numbers are low enough, consider opening a few places. I don’t think schools will even begun to go back until mid/end June when the 12 weeks is up for vulnerable people. Then, perhaps small groups of 10 max to a class maybe allowed back in for the last month. See what numbers look like over the summer and possibly back to something resembling ‘normal’ in September.

PleasantVille · 20/04/2020 20:06

We are in Wales so I think different, my son was due to sit A levels and has been told that will not be happening and grades will be given on course work and predicted grades. Same with GCSE exams so here I don't think until September

This is happening across the UK but the cancellation of the exams isn't related to when anyone thinks the schools will re-open. It was the only possible course of action when no one had any idea if there would be any more teaching before May/June.

They've been cancelled, it won't affect when schools reopen.

VividImagination · 20/04/2020 20:08

I think it will be August in Scotland although October or January would be better for us. Dh is vulnerable so ds3 won’t be going back until at least August anyway. Fortunately he’s happy with home learning and playing with his friends on Xbox.

Emcont · 20/04/2020 22:49

@HowFurloughCanYouGo No it wasn't aimed at you, not at all.

Many of these threads (and there are a lot) show just how many parents can't wait to see the back of their kids.

It's sad 🤷🏻‍♀️

gandalf456 · 20/04/2020 22:52

It's more the being cooped up 24/7 with them, to be fair. The holidays are way different when you can all do stuff

Bflatmajorsharp · 20/04/2020 23:06

Yes, it's more to do with being cooped up 24/7, trying to keep them on track with their school stuff while trying to work, being aware of how much they are missing school and their friends and that teachers are better teachers than I am than not being able to 'wait to see the back of them.'

VivaLeBeaver · 20/04/2020 23:07

After may half term.

Pomegranatepompom · 20/04/2020 23:08

@Emcont

That’s not true. Many pp have said how much they value this time with their children, but people are unable to wfh long term and essentially don’t have the skills to teach (plus work on their normal job), plus isolate. It’s a pretty impossible situation.

colouringinpro · 20/04/2020 23:13

I hope when its actually safe. I have no faith whatsoever in this government. My dd is also in yr10 and struggling with volumes of emails. But she and her brother are safe.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/04/2020 23:17

September at the earliest, quite much possibly later . We need to be on our way to a vaccine, that will take a long time.
