In your opinion, when do you think the kids will be back at school?

I change my mind every day depending on what I read. It ranges anywhere between May and September.

I just wondered what others thought?

I'm with @circusintown The Secretary of State for Education confirmed yesterday that there are plans as to when the schools will open again. I know that we all want children back in school but there is little point speculating on when that will happen.

REdReDRE · 20/04/2020 15:23

I think June.

stressbucket1 · 20/04/2020 15:26

The education secretary yesterday said “currently no plans to have schools open over the summer period”

I took that to mean they had no plans to open during the school summer holidays like they have just been open over Easter hols

Houseyhousey · 20/04/2020 15:26

I think after May half term so w/c 8th June they will start to stagger openings and possibly extend to optional attendance for children of working parents (who do not have a member of their household shielding) then all children with the final wave being those shielding.

Ohdeariedear · 20/04/2020 15:30

August.

gandalf456 · 20/04/2020 15:33

I have had enough of my children fighting and generally wandering around aimlessly. Apart from the fact that it isn't great for me to be thrust in 24/7 company, it's bad for them be be away from the routine and they're missing their friends and I'm concerned they will start to get out of the habit of full time study. Dd's mental health is suffering, too, as she's spending too much time in her head. If this goes on for long, it will be a challenge to pull her back

So, yes, I will be glad when it's safe for them to go to school again

TokyoSushi · 20/04/2020 15:36

With the way our holidays fall I think we might be 8th June. Probably not 'as normal' though. Maybe half days, or a couple of days a week.

I think September before we get back to somewhere near normal.

Deelish75 · 20/04/2020 15:38

Possibly 1st June for some Yr 12, Yr10 and Yr6 children.
September for some YrR - Yr5 children and some Yr7-9.
Completely back to normal - after a vaccine is rolled out.
There are shielded children, children of shielded parents. There are vulnerable children, children of vulnerable parents. I can’t see it being safe for those children to be back in school beforehand.

blue25 · 20/04/2020 15:38

September or January

Northernsoullover · 20/04/2020 15:40

When its safe. I don't care when.

stardance · 20/04/2020 15:41

I think September. I hope sooner. Even if it's only for a few weeks before the summer holidays! Mostly for my 11 year old who would love to be able to do all those end of primary school/ transition to secondary school things that he's otherwise going to miss.

CupOfTeaNonBio · 20/04/2020 15:44

August

BackInTime · 20/04/2020 15:44

After May half term I think in some kind of staggered way. Perhaps nursery's back for childcare

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 20/04/2020 15:48

This...AGAIN...

OliviaPopeRules · 20/04/2020 15:50

I think the 1st of June but with social distancing so maybe only certain years in on certain days so kids will only be doing 1-2 days per week.

YgritteSnow · 20/04/2020 15:54

September. Head Teacher friend thinks this too.

Digestive28 · 20/04/2020 15:55

I think September but I really hope that they are working on how they provide some support to families where school is a lifeline and really struggle without it. If they don’t, schools should go back sooner possibly - domestic violence is up, safeguarding referrals are down due to lockdown

RigaBalsam · 20/04/2020 15:55

Would not be a day ending in Y if we didn't debate it again.
At least it is one a day now instead of two.

It may be sooner than anticipated, the cases are now on a downward trajectory, Nhs is running far beneath capacity.
It would be madness to release people in September, this would risk the second outbreak during Autumn and Winter.
Any release would need to sooner, over the summer months, to guage infection rates and provide time to restrict again over winter.

Letseatgrandma · 20/04/2020 16:02

Unlikely to happen till mid/late June, due to the 12 week period for vulnerable staff.

Will probably initially be in small groups eg 10 pupils per class at a time, which may mean they’re only in 3 days a fortnight for a few weeks for end June/July. Then off for the summer. I would presume back in full for September

Remmy123 · 20/04/2020 16:05

I think before September ..i hope, not because I have had enough but because children need to be in school sbd I cannot see much changing between now and then.

Pipandmum · 20/04/2020 16:14

@BriseisPam the decision has been made as far as GCSEs and A levels for this year. GCSEs would have started in mid May, with some non exam parts already assessed (drama etc). So no exams now. There's always the chance to resist them next year if students unhappy with results (as any year).
I think there's a good possibility after May half term, so June 1, for schools to physically reopen. Ours starting back with full schedule remote learning next week and have extended two weeks into summer break, so hopefully not too much to catch up on. I'm not sure a phased return will work.

Giantpinesahem so true. I well up thinking about all that my son has missed out on; SATS they worked hard for, yr 6 residential, prom, named jumpers, yearbook, secondary school induction, being involved in organising and running sports day to name just a few. Not to mention the steady introduction to walking home from school that we planned together to happen over the course of summer term ( I collect in car currently)

OnTheMoors · 20/04/2020 16:52

If it is September then we need realise there will be a lot of problems and school refusal after such a long break

Carlislemumof4 · 20/04/2020 16:58

Earliest September, January a possibility due to flu season and risk of another wave of Covid-19 in the autumn.
