How is Sweden and China doing now?

Polly02 · 14/04/2020 11:06

I’ve tried looking in papers online but can’t find any updated news.

Must look at Worldometer.

But does anyone know any more than the figures?

Don't know about China, but Sweden has more than 900 dead and thousands more expected to die in coming weeks as they have practiced a relaxed attitude towards this pandemic. The neighbouring countries started their lockdowns weeks ago and Denmark has less than 300 dead, Norway around 130-150 dead and Finland 50-60.

whirlwinds · 14/04/2020 11:35

Sweden Found this article just now which might help a bit.

PicsInRed · 14/04/2020 11:35

Sweden = rapidly escalating death toll. They have erred terribly.

China = beginning of 2nd wave. They manufacture a lot of what we rely on generally, but specifically PPE and the raw ingredients of the medicines which India manufactures for the West. God help them (and us).

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 13:07

@PicsInRed Do you have an article about the second wave in China?

PicsInRed · 14/04/2020 13:41

Here you go:

They're now importing cases back into the country.

Tbh, country that size, 1.6 billion people, some extremely rural, impoverished, subsistence areas - there is highly likely some uncontrolled transmission still going on in the Centre/West of the country.

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 13:48

But they are quarantining those people for 28 days. So it's not actually that big a thing unless I'm missing something.

This is the best place to see Sweden's figures, as they correct for reporting being dodgy over weekends and holidays. It's in swedish though, but pretty easy to follow...sjukdomsfall is cases, avlidna is deaths

Terralee · 14/04/2020 13:59

My sisters friend is Swedish- her sister is a nurse & they won't be giving ventilators to anyone over 60!!
Bars are still open & people are all at work.
But the nurses ppe is much better than the nhs ppe.

Seriouslyastounded · 14/04/2020 14:01

Doesn’t matter what happens in China because it won’t be he truth we are told.

YappityYapYap · 14/04/2020 14:05

There's more chance of peppa pig flying over my house tonight than the 3,600 deaths in China being true

Andante57 · 14/04/2020 14:07

Exactly, seriously and yappity

Polly02 · 14/04/2020 14:10

Thank you

I don't think we should compare what different countries are doing or not doing: each country will do what they think is right for them.

There are no rights or wrongs in this situation, because no-one has ever handled it before. Some theories will work out better in practice than others, but each country in the world is different from all the others in terms of demographics, geography, economy etc, there really is no point in comparing the UK any random country with any other random country and pronouncing one "better" or "worse" than the other.

SirVixofVixHall · 14/04/2020 15:05

Sweden - spoke to friend there a couple of days ago. He lives in a rural area near the sea, and they have been inundated with people coming from Stockholm to stay in their Summer houses over the Easter holidays. He is very worried that they will now have a large increase of cases all in one go.

PicsInRed · 14/04/2020 15:11

But they are quarantining those people for 28 days. So it's not actually that big a thing unless I'm missing something.

They can't keep the world out forever without returning to the state of an isolationist Kingdom.

As I said above..

Tbh, country that size, 1.6 billion people, some extremely rural, impoverished, subsistence areas - there is highly likely some uncontrolled transmission still going on in the Centre/West of the country.

...it is just vanishingly improbable that they have eradicated internal spread and circulation.

DianaT1969 · 14/04/2020 15:33

A friend in Sweden hopes that by next month they will have built up some herd immunity without tanking their ecomomy (unknown of course). That way they can open their borders for tourism/trade whilst continuing to shield the elderly and vulnerable. Neighbouring Scandinavian countries who locked down early will be vulnerable as soon as they open their borders. Which begs the question, do they plan to close borders until a vaccine or ant-viral drug is found? Possibly.

Bloomburger · 14/04/2020 15:35

China's figures are fake.

here

Rocketmam · 14/04/2020 15:41

I believe the technical term for Sweden is 'fucked'.

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 16:00

"They can't keep the world out forever without returning to the state of an isolationist Kingdom"

Of course not, I didn't say otherwise. But neither can any other country so it seems a little odd to single them out. If we're talking about rising figures, but those figures are only people who are entering the country, then it would seem they have a good control of it.

@Bloomburger fucking everyone's figures are fake. Why pick on China particularly? The UK only counts deaths in hospitals. They barely do any testing. The figures are much higher than the government is claiming and yet I see this "China are lying" thing daily.

That is not to support the Chinese government. They are terrible and yes of course they are fudging their figures.

But so is everyone else.

Delatron · 14/04/2020 16:01

Won’t we only know when all this is over? When other countries have come out of lockdown and we either see second and third waves and more deaths? At that point will Sweden be on a downward trajectory and be through it mainly, quickly and with their economy in tact?

As long as hospitals don’t become overwhelmed.

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 16:05

@MrsJoshNavidi I think when the virus was spreading quickly in China and then Korea and then Italy and yet the UK decided it wasn't a big deal and that football matches could go ahead and shaking hands with people with coronavirus was a good idea, you can safely say that some countries took the wrong approach.

1000 people (reported) dying a day in the UK? The approach is not right. Not when Korea has had 200 deaths total. Although they might be sneaky liars too, I guess.

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 16:06

@Delatron That's what I'm thinking regarding Sweden. Unless you suddenly have enough tests and aggressively test, track and isolate like Korea, you'll just get more waves as soon as people start gathering again.

Is there any news on the UK getting more tests at any point?

Delatron · 14/04/2020 16:10

Whilst we can’t directly compare different countries we can definitely learn what strategies have worked in other countries. Though it’s a bit late now. You can’t argue with how well S.Korea have handled this.

Mass testing and contact tracing is a successful strategy and could and should have been adopted elsewhere. Instead of denial and then massive lockdown. They’ve avoided a big lockdown. Germany have done well.

It’s not just the fact we are densely populated here that we have a high death rate.

Delatron · 14/04/2020 16:14

Yes @LoveIsLovely we’re just managing the peaks of this and delaying it somewhat. There will be a second wave and maybe a third wave and aprolonged economic impact

Sweden’s strategy is just to power on through and get over it as quick as possible without hammering their economy.

PicsInRed · 14/04/2020 16:19

Of course not, I didn't say otherwise. But neither can any other country so it seems a little odd to single them out

They're the world's most populous nation with beyond obviously ongoing internal circulation of the virus and ridiculously fucking fake numbers.

Oh, plus human transmission started there and they orchestrated quite possibly the greatest though most inept cover up in history.

Seems fair to single them out to me. 🤷‍♀️
