Do you think our holiday to Italy will be cancelled?

We have a walking holiday booked at the end of June/beginning of July. Obviously I want this virus to be cleared up as soon as possible and dh is still optimistic that Italy will be over the worst by then and will.lift travel restrictions.

However, sincr booking I have developed back problems. I was seeing a physio but obviously that's now stopped. At the moment it's so painful I can't even walk.to the end of the road and I'm really worried that i won't be able to do high altitude walking with a rucksack.

As I say, I don't want this virus to drag on but part of me thinks that Italy won't have lifted the travel bans by end of June and our holiday will be cancelled anyway. What do you think the chances are?

Bad back (so need health insurance covering a pre-existing condition), walking holiday carrying a rucksack, in Italy, in approximately 8 weeks?

Even if you could go, I wouldn’t. Even if you did go, it wouldn’t be enjoyable.

Because even if travel restrictions are listed, I suspect insurers will be more cautious and refuse to insure people for corona related issues until it is clear everything will be fine.

From what I'm reading the OP is hoping they'll still be bans so that she doesn't have to go, as she has a bad back? Could be reading the post completely wrong though.

Yes I think OP is saying she thinks she will not be able to go because of her back, so hoping travel restrictions will not have been lifted.

Even if Italy comes out of lockdown, travel restrictions won’t immediately be lifted. Especially not travel to the UK, baring in mind how hard we are going to be hit - apparently we’re going to be hit the worst out of Europe judging by our current trajectory. Chances are when Italy is out of lockdown, we will still be in lockdown so doubtful that Italy would want Brits in their country so may even issue a temporary travel ban

If You are cancelling the holiday due to sickness (your back) rather than coronavirus, then you may be able to get the money back, so might actually work in your favour.

I think it reasonably possible that whatever Italy's internal situation, they will not be accepting British tourists.

I think there is an assumption that for 12-18 months we'll be relaxing and tightening restrictions as the virus calms down and flares up again.

Perhaps by June we might be in a phase of relaxed restrictions but it seems unlikely that would extend to foreign travel. However, if it did, I'd be terrified to travel abroad so soon in case things suddenly worsen again.

Bad backs are miserable. I have one and can't get to see my usual physio at the moment. I hope you feel better soon.

We're booked for Italy on 20 May and have been advised by the tour company that the trip is cancelled. We will get a refund or a trip on a later date. Best that you don't cancel and let them cance!.

Yes, but that sounds awful as though I want people to still be catching this horrible disease, which of course I don't.

I've never had a problem with my back before and when we booked this holiday I had no reason to think I wouldn't be up to the walking. We are insured so will get our money back if I cancel because of back problems, assuming that the insurers accept that. Or we could hang on until it's officially cancelled. Dh is desperate to go and doesnt want to cancel yet as he thinks there is a chance my back will improve and that restrictions will be lifted.

God even if restrictions were lifted and your back improved dont you think Italy just will need time to recover from its own onslaught. I'm sorry but morally I would not be going. Restrictions won't have lifted anyway so it's immaterial.

We are insured so will get our money back if I cancel because of back problems, assuming that the insurers accept that.

Please don't assume anything OP. Check the terms of your policy as regards the basis on which they will pay out.

I know exactly where you're coming from re holding out to see if the holiday is cancelled anyway. If I were you, check if your back problem is an acceptable reason on which they will settle your claim. You would need to provide evidence of your problem, which could be medical record from your GP. They may well accept an email confirmation from your GP to validate that you have had a back problem and receiving physio for it.

It's better not to have to hang on for a cancellation due to COVID 19 if you can do it due to your back - a bird in the hand, and all that!

Other countries will keep travellers from the U.K. out as long as we have the virus not under control.
However the person who said that morally we shouldn't be travelling to let Italy recover - all countries that rely on tourism will have been hugely impacted and will want tourists back as soon as it's safe to allow them. Tourists will be part of Italy's recovery.

If the travel restrictions are lifted, they will probably be replaced by a mandatory 14 day quarantine as is currently being seen in Asia.

Even if your back improves, I would not go on this holiday. It could seriously set it off. That would not be fun at high altitude in the middle of nowhere!!

Your dh doesn’t understand how these things work. You would need to spend a long time working out to strengthen your back sufficiently to ensure to the best of your ability it didn’t. Chronic pain sufferer here and didn’t know this before my pain got really bad..... now too late due to chronic illness and disability.

I would cancel through your insurance if this is accepted and I would do this as soon as you can. My understanding is that a lot of holidays are being deferred.
