Cancel summer holiday - Cornwall

There has been a few threads recently discussing cancelling holidays abroad this summer, what are everyone’s thoughts on their UK based holidays?

I have a holiday planned with a B&B to Cornwall at the end of July, I have not heard from the owners that they are cancelling their bookings.

Has anyone had their summer breaks cancelled?

Is there anyone here from Cornwall that knows any updates regarding letting the tourists back this summer? - I know things are all based in government guidelines and how long lock down and restrictions are going on for, just interested in the locals thoughts?

Chill09 I couldn’t agree more with everything you say

@Daisydoesnt you don't need to be sick to claim, you can just be self isolating .
Self declare you are self isolating at home or sick and you can claim approx £75 per week.
Open to those who are self employed and employed, the rules were changed to help with CV. Previously claims were not paid until day 8. Claims now pays from day 1.

As soon as this ends I’m fucking off to Italy.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/05/2020 10:36

@Chill09 I agree with you and have seen the same.

@yankatthebear
Correct, lived here 31 years and I'll never be localSmile

Daisydoesnt · 22/05/2020 11:06

@Alwayscheerful bless you thank you but I'm not nor never have been self-isolating. I'm also not registered as self-employed. My B&B income is reported through my tax return as income from UK property.

@Daisydoesnt
Cornwall council have just announced that they have grants for businesses that have slipped through the net without 3 years of tax returns etc. I think they are doing it on a case by case so may not be quick but they've been pretty good so far, contact them😊

You found me rude @yankatthebear We picked up 2 bin bags of shite off our small local beach yesterday evening, used sanitary towels, nappies, shit, as well as the usual stuff people leave behind. That's what's fucking rude and that hasn't happened until the restrictions were relaxed.
It was rammed and the mostly older residents can't social distance.
Limited supermarkets which were beginning to adjust to the new normal are now swamped again.
In my mums village the police have been escorting second home owners out and going back to check they've gone, police in Devon and Cornwall are asking people not to visit. The infrastructure of normal life hasn't returned and sadly nor should visitors.

Many businesses have adapted, pubs and restaurants are doing takeaways. Pasty and ice cream companies are doing local box deliveries. We are buying our local produce and supporting companies that are struggling.

People are scared and trying to protect their communities and this isn't just a Cornish phenomenon. I had holidays booked that have been cancelled too, I'm not slatting Scottish people for not letting me over the border, its common bloody sense. Scotland will hopefully be there for me next year.

The overcrowding in Cornwall in peak summer is a big part of the local concern over what might happen here this summer, with covid in the mix too.

Bookings are up 443% in some Cornish campsites compared to last year www.cornwalllive.com/whats-on/whats-on-news/huge-surge-holiday-bookings-cornwall-4152576

How we will manage social distancing in our small shops and streets, even beaches, I’m not really sure.

And unfortunately, large numbers of visitors always brings with it litter on beaches, parked cars blocking vehicle access and increased need for beach rescue. All things that are very difficult to manage during this pandemic.

I hope holidaymakers can visit safely and sensibly this summer but I’m not sure how it will work. Our village beach was totally packed yesterday, with used nappies left behind and piss on the sea wall. And that’s just from the people that live within a day trip’s distance.

Chilli18 · 22/05/2020 13:26

Its just a crazy situation for everyone. You'd think that the people desperate to visit a beauty spot for their day out would treat it with respect and keep it clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy. Instead theres rubbish being dumped everywhere etc and then people wonder why the locals are moaning.

I'm not planning to go on my July holiday - my question is more around how to bail out. Wait it out and hope they cancel and give me a refund, or just relinquish my deposit.

Worst case is going to be if you are allowed to travel but requested not to, or if lots of the facilities and attractions are shut or just less fun to use (who wants to play crazy golf if you have to sanitise you're hands every time you touch something? we're not planning to stay in a tiny flat in the middle of a seaside resort so we can keep the kids entertained indoors.)

KinderWild · 22/05/2020 16:19

That's exactly our dilema @spindelina. At the moment we are leaning towards not paying the final balance and for fitting the deposit. It's not money we can to loose but I fear we'll be told be the gov that we can go and we know we don't want to. Paying the final deposit will mean we loose 3 times what we've currently paid.

Forget loo roll and PPE, it's crystal balls we need now!
