Cancel summer holiday - Cornwall

Seapink2 · 07/04/2020 09:16

There has been a few threads recently discussing cancelling holidays abroad this summer, what are everyone’s thoughts on their UK based holidays?

I have a holiday planned with a B&B to Cornwall at the end of July, I have not heard from the owners that they are cancelling their bookings.

Has anyone had their summer breaks cancelled?

Is there anyone here from Cornwall that knows any updates regarding letting the tourists back this summer? - I know things are all based in government guidelines and how long lock down and restrictions are going on for, just interested in the locals thoughts?

Thanks for the responses. Yes it’s for July - 15 weeks away, I’m not planning on being a selfish fucker waltzing around Cornwall right now!!

I was interested in what others thought about UK holidays in a few months once we are over the peak and lockdown, wether people were still thinking of going ahead and the likelyhood of the tourist industry’s and locals welcoming us.

I agree with a previous poster of having something to look forward to but of course if this continues further on I will stay away if we are still advised to.

You really think they will lift restrictions to the extent that we can all gaily travel around the country?

Probably not, but we can but hope eh?

endofthecorridoor · 07/04/2020 11:35

People in Cornwall are asking you not to visit. Just that ! it’s manageable here without visitors but you can’t imagine the difference they make. Especially if we have very few cases a massive influx of holidaymakers could ruin everyone’s efforts. Please rebook for next year. Also don’t assume all holiday cottages are owned by Cornish people. I’m sure you would be delighted to rent out your holiday home if you live in Surrey !!

No one on this thread I can see is refusing to accept anything? As far as I can see everyone is saying they are hopefull, no one knows any answers yet and If we can’t go then so be it.

That’s certainly how I feel and I will accept it will be 2021 fingers crossed.

Perhaps the holiday companies need to think about this rather than making it hard for people. One of the cottages we have booked is independent and owned by someone living in Cornwall. She has asked us to wait and see, which we are going to do as we trust her judgement as a local.

The problem with Sykes is they are taking money back from cottage owners but refusing to refund customers. If they won’t allow us to rebook again we’re going to swallow losing he money but not cancel, just not turn up so they can’t make even more money out of this by booking someone else.

The only winners here are Sykes, although hopefully people will think twice about using them in the future.

Tulipstulips · 07/04/2020 11:42

We cancelled a holiday in Cornwall in May, but I’d wait to see for July or August.

eliope · 07/04/2020 11:44

@seapink it's the fact that anyone is even still imagining that they can holiday this year full stop.
I can't get my head around it. I had holidays planned just like most people, but we're not going because there's a pandemic.

Eileope I think the Cornish tourism feels quite differently to you.

It’s out of everyone’s hands at the moment. Just a wait and see.

If restrictions are lifted then people should go and support our country tries tourism.

I’ve not got anything booked but keep an eye on the places I’d like to go and they are desperate to reopen

eliope · 07/04/2020 11:50

@rebel nope I think you'll find that most of us would like to stay well and healthy and see you next year. That is the official line from Malcolm Bell who has said that he couldn't believe he'd ever be saying such a thing.
We do have other sources of income here and many businesses are being helped by council grants.

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/04/2020 11:55

You’re probably better off letting the government know that then so that when restrictions are lifted they put special powers in force to stop hoards of people flocking to your seaside town.
There’s only a few people on Mn and an awful lot of people out there who won’t get your message.

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/04/2020 11:56

Surly if the Cornish tourism board didn’t want that they should be publishing it?
The campsites should be not taking bookings for August and September.
Maybe you should remind them that they don’t want visitors ?

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 07/04/2020 12:02

I would hold off cancelling, if we are over the worse of infections by then, they might be very glad of people turning up and spending their money. Places like Cornwall will struggle if they lose a whole tourist season.

Just wait and see what the situation is, by this time next month things might be very different.

You'd be kicking yourself if you cancel, then there's no lockdown by July in the UK but overseas travel still isn't an option so it's impossible to rebook in the UK...

That said, I wouldnt be buying any new holiday clothes just yet. Because I think I'll be several dress sizes bigger by July if we stay in lockdown for much longer

KaptenKrusty · 07/04/2020 12:03

Lolz at the people saying we are not welcoming visitors this year - it’s not up to you!

eliope · 07/04/2020 12:05

As I said up thread the pasties are all mine this year @rebel

LouLouLoo · 07/04/2020 12:07

What does everyone think will happens with UK holidays like Butlins and Centerparcs for this Summer? If restrictions are relaxed they won’t voluntarily stay closed but they strike me as being prefect virus spreading grounds?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 07/04/2020 12:12

There is only one hospital in Cornwall that can deal with COVID cases and most other severe medical conditions, and as it's rarely out of black it's really not somewhere you want to be relying on.
Cornwall Council are helping local businesses through this with a grant, which is very welcome for holiday let owners who have no business.
I'm very torn - I don't want visitors coming in late summer and potentially causing a new spike, but I do want our restaurants, pubs & cafes to be able to survive till next year, and our museums, bookstores, art galleries and other small businesses to cope. I also feel extremely privileged to be able to take my early morning exercise from home out to the coast path, so whilst I'm loving the deserted beach, I'm aware I'm one of the very few who can benefit from this.
Please be guided by Cornwall Council and Visit Cornwall - I'm sure that is the best place to go for the responsible choice.

CheddarGorgeous · 07/04/2020 12:38

I think it's too early to know what will happen in July.

I have a holiday / event booked for August, I'm assuming it's going to go ahead for now.

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/04/2020 12:51

I could really do with a pasty right now.

I made my own the other evening for dinner. Wasn’t too bad. But doesn’t taste the same when it’s not being eaten by the sea Sad

oldbeforem · 07/04/2020 13:28

‘Cornwall and Devon’ don’t want you...

The OP is saying she’s planning on going now or if the advice is still not to travel.

If restrictions are lifted and things and heading back to normal then I’m pretty sure Cornwall and Devon will be crying out for visitors to rebuild their economy.

oldbeforem · 07/04/2020 13:30

Sorry the OP ISNT saying she wants to travel now

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/04/2020 13:30

I could really do with a pasty right now..

I was looking at online pasty shops online yesterday!

Srslydontgiveacrap · 07/04/2020 13:30

@eliope

Didn't realise we were talking to the Queen of Cornwall. Please do let us know when people are allowed to head your way.
