Cancel summer holiday - Cornwall

Seapink2 · 07/04/2020 09:16

There has been a few threads recently discussing cancelling holidays abroad this summer, what are everyone’s thoughts on their UK based holidays?

I have a holiday planned with a B&B to Cornwall at the end of July, I have not heard from the owners that they are cancelling their bookings.

Has anyone had their summer breaks cancelled?

Is there anyone here from Cornwall that knows any updates regarding letting the tourists back this summer? - I know things are all based in government guidelines and how long lock down and restrictions are going on for, just interested in the locals thoughts?

For those saying Cornwall has multiple hospitals - no it doesn't. Minor injuries unit isn't going to be able to cope with anything Coronavirus related, there is only ONE hospital in Truro that can do that and it's only just come out of special measures, and is always groaning at the seams.
The general message I understand, as a local, is that we'd welcome tourists next year - please wait until then. Although I agree it is too early to say for certain but I think it's very likely that normal holiday service will not be resumed this season. We'll see.

Adjusts crownWink thank you @Srslydontgiveacrap you've made an old Kent lass happy, I'll be sure to let you know.

I’m just about to rebook our Cornish holiday for May 2021. I really hope everything is mostly back to normal by then! We lost our deposit for this year’s holiday because we cancelled ourself - the balance was due and we were worried we might lose all of it.

I think Visit Cornwall and Cornwall Council etc have made it very clear that visitors should stay away from Cornwall at the moment and until further notice. We have one large general hospital (yes, there are the local hospitals, but they don't have the facilities or capacity to deal with COVID) and we have a relatively aged population. If things do escalate as they're predicted to, our facilities in Cornwall will struggle to cope with the permanent population.

I think we can say with some certainty that when it's considered safe to travel again, Cornwall and places like it that rely heavily on tourism will be delighted to welcome visitors. But no one really knows when that is going to be. There are no guidelines about it yet, as far as I know.

I’ve got a cottage booked for middle of October in near Aberdeen, received an email stating it needed to be moved, queried it and it turned out to be a mistake so at the moment still going ahead

Rowgtfc72 · 07/04/2020 15:43

I'm booked into a cornish holiday park in May. They've refunded holidays up to the 20th April but are deciding what to do next on the actual 20th April. Were not cancelling as we need the full refund. Surely they wouldn't be mad enough to reopen?
Got to say we've stayed here quite a few times and I'm not sure, after the way they've handled this, that I'd stay there again.

Aurorie11 · 07/04/2020 16:00

We are booked to go to Cornwall in 18 weeks time for 15 days. Not expecting to go but need the travel company and holiday booking company to cancel and refund, or offer change of date. At the moment they've only done this up to 30th June, so the ball is in their court. It would cost us around £3.5k if we don't go, so we need the providers to cancel

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 07/04/2020 16:33

@Rowgtfc72 - to be fair, they are probably waiting to get an official notification from the Government so their insurance will cover them paying you back.

We are all assuming lockdown will be extended beyond the 3 weeks first mentioned, but until it is, and the instruction not to travel is extended, then places like your holiday park won't have the money to pay you back. They could be in a financial mess if they jump the gun.

Everyone is holding off waiting for the government to make clear announcement. It's really not on they aren't.

OneForMeToo · 07/04/2020 16:42

I’ve got two May holidays booked. One site currently says they are closed until further notice and will move dates, no refunds. Another if a well known company who I believe where the last to close and are currently saying they will reopen May 1st. Then I have a August holiday with balance due June who are closed until further notice with no other info. It’s not very helpful.

girlicorne · 07/04/2020 16:44

We should be in Cornwall now.

We have a cottage in the Lakes booked for the end of August, I am hoping we can still go having cancelled four holidays (Easter, May half term, July and October) and six weekend breaks up to the end of May and many camping trips for June and July now crossed off the calendar I need this to look forward to! But we will see how things pan out and look forward to next year. As long as my loved ones stay safe, that's what's important now.

My concern is with international travel looking highly unlikely for the rest of the year, popular UK destinations such as Devon and Cornwall and the Lakes which can be exceptionally busy in a normal school holiday will be unbearably rammed and I won't enjoy that at all.

AteAllTheAfterEights · 07/04/2020 16:46

I’d be quite happy to cancel my holiday to Cornwall in July if the people of Cornwall don’t want us- could the people of Cornwall also ask the air b&b owner to give me a refund please?

Spindelina · 21/05/2020 22:15

How are you all feeling now about U.K. summer holidays?

Our balance was due imminently but they've shifted it back by two weeks.

Still not sure whether we will pay the balance (and risk the cottage being available but us not wanting to go), try to shift to next year (is this the holiday we want next year?) or just forfeit our deposit.

Remmy123 · 21/05/2020 22:19

People Cornwall you don't sound very welcoming 😂😂

WitsEnding · 21/05/2020 22:27

I have an airbnb booked for a now cancelled event in Cornwall, about 40 miles from where I live in Devon. Have told the owner I am happy to drop out if she is uncomfortable or restrictions warrant. At the same time, lots of people are driving past both of us to get to the beaches ... I'm on the fence but will wait and see.

If I had to decide now to get a refund, I'd cancel.

KinderWild · 21/05/2020 22:34

@Spindelina we are in the same position. Booked with Aspects, balance due 6 June. Holiday due to start 6 July. Aspects are not offering the option to move to next year though, which we would happily take. They're offering a move to another date in 2020 but that's only if the cottage owner approves. Confused

Saladmakesmesad · 22/05/2020 00:56

You really think they will lift restrictions to the extent that we can all gaily travel around the country?

See how fast things change? Here we are just a few weeks on and actually we can all 'gaily travel around the country' already. The only thing we can't yet do is stay overnight, which I think will be permitted in another few weeks.

Yankathebear · 22/05/2020 01:10

@eliope ‘you’ve made an old Kent lass happy’

Ahhh so you’re not even actually local? You are just incredibly rude. I thought you might own the place from the way you are talking!

@Seapink2 we aren’t all dicks. Maybe wait and see what happens.

2468whodoyouappreciate · 22/05/2020 01:21

I lived on Cornwall forv2 years near Helston.
August the place became rammed absolutely rammed. Even if only half the normal people still go it will be utter madness and pretty impossible yo adhere to social distancing.

Can you imagine the queue just to get in Tesco with holidaymakers adding to it?
Life as we knew it is long gone sadly. I can't see anywhere coping with a mass influx of people. It's just not viable if social dustancingvis properly adhered to!

DBML · 22/05/2020 03:03

I absolutely believe summer holidays will go ahead. The country needs the £££ for a start.
I would even bet that some people make it abroad.
A lot has changed in the last two weeks.
There’s over 8 weeks until the summer holiday.

DollyParton2 · 22/05/2020 06:42

We have a cottage in The Cotswolds booked in August. I’m definitely still holding out hope for that I guess different from Cornwall as lots more hospitals.

TazSyd · 22/05/2020 06:53

@DBML

Yes RyanAir and EasyJet are resuming flights from July. Just in time for the holiday season.

Rosehip10 · 22/05/2020 07:05

@eliope You have an opinion, you don't speak for the whole of Cornwall! People will come if holidays in the UK are allowed.

Bi11abong · 22/05/2020 07:22

The gov have an obligation to keep people who live in these areas safe. If they don’t protect locals from the scenes, behaviours we witnessed last weekend and a spike it’s going to come back and bite them in the bum. It’s pretty hellish in these areas as it is during the summer, if there are bigger numbers let alone normal numbers during a pandemic it will be one unbearable and not safe. They can’t simply sit back and say knock yourselves out. I think there will be unpleasantness and uproar if they do.

LizzyButton · 22/05/2020 07:41

Go to Cornwall with its high R rate and bring the virus back to low R London and the South East from a coughing pitchforker?

timeforawine · 22/05/2020 07:48

Not cancelling either of my holidays as I'd lose the money, see what happens nearer the time. If we can go we're going
