What is the true story?

Hancock has said he has lost two people close to him.

Somebody I know has died.

Boris has been hospitalised.

The country has been shut down despite us knowing that to do this will cripple us for years to come, so it's a very serious situation.

A small fraction of our population is supposedly affected but I'm guessing we all know people hospitalised or dead.

This is obviously so much worse than we have been told

It’s looking like wartime Britain, will rationing be next, and Britain will be in debt the same as after the war?

twinnywinny14 · 06/04/2020 05:19

We have known since February this was coming and that it would be huge. We also knew that ‘lockdown’ or restrictions would be needed. We’ve known since the beginning of March that possibly 20,000 could die from this. There was talk of makeshift hospitals and pop up mortuaries being needed. Unfortunately until 19th March when Boris partially closed schools most people had their heads in the sand over it and believed it would never happen. They continued to either ignore it or bury their heads in the sand until the day he put these measures in to place. Unfortunately there are still people who believe this will all be over next week and that it’s all a fuss over nothing.

Branster · 06/04/2020 05:45

Nobody is holding anything back. One of the first things Boris said right from the beginning was that many people will due. He made it very clear. This is the reality. Then there were some complaints that he’s being insensitive or exaggerating.
The problem has been widely detailed and analysed in the media for a long time now with reports starting from China then covering the whole world.
All the news reports are out there. There is limited actual knowledge but the reality has been very widely reported at an international level. If anything, there’s too much and I find it difficult to keep up with it all every day but it’s there.

PowerslidePanda · 06/04/2020 05:54

We were told at the offset 20,000 are expected.
Someone must have arrived at that figure for a reason. Latest statistics agree with the original forecast. I don't know who drew the stats together. I just hope we won't meet the forecast but I suspect they're even upping those stats as we ride along in the pandemic.

If I recall correctly, the 20,000 deaths was "if everyone adhere's to the lockdown rules". Which lots of people aren't doing Sad

joystir59 · 06/04/2020 06:05

I know two people who have it, I'm hoping they will be OK buy both have underlying health issues. One of them.is a front line NHS nurse who had been working on Covid-19 wards with out adequate PPE

larrygrylls · 06/04/2020 06:05

OP,

You are fear mongering and some perspective is required here.

Even if we have 60,000 deaths, that would be an additional 10% to a normal year. While every death is sad to family and friends, and especially sad for those who die clearly before their time, dying is a normal part of living. If we have 660,000 deaths in 2020 as opposed to our normal 600,000 (and people are expecting closer to 20,000) it will not be a national tragedy, in fact retrospectively people will scarcely notice.

Cover up scare stories seem ridiculous to me. I know several people who were told by medics that they have it (5-7) and all have recovered. The worst was admitted to hospital for a few hours for monitoring. (I am in London). Luckily I know no one who was respirated or died. The individual anecdotes above totally agree with what we are being told:80% mild to moderate, 20% more severe and a probable CFR of 1-2%.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 06/04/2020 06:13

I think only now people are realising/accepting that it's bad. We were being told but it wasn't really sinking in.

Hellohello2020 · 06/04/2020 06:57

Agree about keeping quiet, first week it was in th hospital I work at they published numbers and sent seperate emails of condolence for the first 2 patient deaths. Then they stopped telling us and remind us to be careful on social media and check the policy on it.

trying29 · 06/04/2020 07:02

My mum has it now with pneumonia and pleurisy - she’s only 60 and no underlying conditions. It’s far worse than I or she imagined. She’s pretty ill.

Moomin8 · 06/04/2020 07:03

One of the first things Boris said right from the beginning was that many people will due. He made it very clear. This is the reality.

Er, I recall that this was back when the government had decided to let the virus burn through the population taking all vulnerable people with it. In order to avoid shutting businesses down.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/04/2020 07:04

trying
I’m sorry to hear that. Flowers

CathyandHeathcliff · 06/04/2020 07:05

I guess I must be lucky but I don’t know anyone who has been hospitalised or died of it (so far) and hope it stays that way!

CathyandHeathcliff · 06/04/2020 07:06

Although I think I may have had it myself, but obviously didn’t need hospital admission. I’ll never know without a test.

Knocksomesense · 06/04/2020 07:11

Absolutely no way does a whole world shut down for no good reason.

A family member of mine is working as a supplier for companies building morturies. He is very busy at the moment.

Actions speak louder than words

Moomin8 · 06/04/2020 07:17

*Italy, by all accounts, has a v good health system and people were surprised by the way it was overwhelmed in Lombardy.
**
*One of the factors that has made Lombardy hit so hard by this is that their air quality is very toxic - much worse than London.

There's a disturbing piece in the Mail Online from a doctor about the tick sheet she now has to use before ventilating. The chances of recovery have to be much higher than previous practice.

But putting someone on a ventilator in itself will put pressure and stress on someone who might already be very ill. So it's a catch 22.

The80sweregreat · 06/04/2020 07:18

An old work colleague of mine ( now more a Facebook friend) her mum died of it alone in hospital. She was elderly, it sounded horrific. She couldn't be with her when she passed.
My sons girlfriend is a nurse and they can't see each other as she has to isolate between shifts. She doesn't say much on the texts etc but she is struggling.
The economy is tanking and new mortuaries are being built. I'm mid 50s and I've never known such dark days.

joydivisionovengloves71 · 06/04/2020 07:24

The other day someone posted a BBC link saying that if a person had the virus in their body the death is recorded, no matter how mild the symptoms, and many of these deaths would have happened at that time anyway.

1forsorrow · 06/04/2020 07:25

A small fraction of our population is supposedly affected but I'm guessing we all know people hospitalised or dead. I don't know anyone with it let alone dead or in hospital. I check in with my 4 kids most days and as of the weekend none of them knew anyone with it either, and 2 are frontline NHS so they have patients with it but no one they know. I hope that continues.

The mother of a friend of one of my kids is suspected of having it, but so far mild so no test.

BeijingBikini · 06/04/2020 07:29

I know a LOT of people who have had weird coughs/colds at the start of March (me included) and as of last night I know one person in hospital needing oxygen (not ventilator). They were very morbidly obese though, so not in "perfect health" as the newspapers constantly trot out.

Ferfooksek · 06/04/2020 07:31

If it was really, really bad then we’d be on a very strict lockdown and were not

deydododatdodontdeydo · 06/04/2020 07:31

We were told 80% of our population would get it and 450,000 would die.
How is that downplaying it?
How is it wors than we were told?

I have a wide fairly wide social circle (West Yorkshire) and don't know anyone who even thinks they've had it. We're still locking ourselves in.

Ferfooksek · 06/04/2020 07:31

Bluntness100 · 06/04/2020 07:32

Quite shocked people think Cummings or Boris came up with the herd immunity idea, neither are scientists or doctors, it’s hugely obvious it wasn’t their idea and they were going with the advice they were given from their scientific and medical advisors. They weren’t madly reading journals and inventing shit. Confused

In reality herd immunity may be what every country ultimately has to go for, but again it won’t be their “idea” it will be on the advice of the medical and scientific community.

kingkuta · 06/04/2020 07:39

Agree. I know 3 confirmed cases. 2 men in late 60s who were tested early on as they had come back from skiing in Italy. Both very mild symptoms and quick recovery and colleagues 91 yr old grandmother.91 yr old has pre-existing conditions and had been in hospital recently for something unrelated. She was very ill for 2 days then turned a corner and recovered relatively quickly after that.

beautifulteeth · 06/04/2020 07:41

Deydo

Well you are very fortunate. Family members have it badly. Really badly. They're on the shielded list and have it. It's terrifying.

My BIlL lost one of his parents to it last week.

You are very fortunate. I dearly hope it stays that way for you and your family
