Interesting advice from a doc and nurse at Queens - how to protect your lungs from further infection if you have CV.

I’m not a medics but my brother is a nurse and he says that it fits with ITU protocol re treatment of patients with pneumonia:

Not seen the clip but but the lying on your front is called proning and is used a lot in ICU with vented patients. Oxygen requirements can drop very quickly after it’s been done. Funnily enough they are now trying it with awake non vented patients- in fact we had a couple admitted on friday night for whom it was really effective, just got them to lie on their fronts.

Thank you

Thank you so much for posting this. Will repost elsewhere.

Ok now a stupid question, he emphasized the pillow in front of you twice - under you head and in normal pillow position? Head laid to the side? As I say, stupid question but my head is not in gear as I've been ill today.

huffaloopa · 05/04/2020 23:47

AbbieLexie · 05/04/2020 23:49

Thank you. Will make practising part of my daily routine.

UYScuti · 06/04/2020 00:01

Thanks for that link Madhairday👍reminded me that last time I had a chest infection I did deep breathing etc to try and clear it, I also used to pat myself on the back and ribs just gently tapping to stimulate further clearance.
Also I think the neti pot is worth using to help keep the sinuses clear
quite a lot of work though when you're feeling ill☹️😷

middleager · 06/04/2020 00:23

I'm doing this as currently ill on day 5 with something nasty....

Theflushedzebra · 06/04/2020 01:20

That's excellent OP - thank you. Sounds like people would benefit from doing this now - he says do it before you even pick up the infection.

GingerScallop · 06/04/2020 01:23

Thanks

This guide to managing breathless with COVID19 looks really good too

NorahsBatty · 06/04/2020 09:54

Is the a video of how to lay on the bed? What does he mean with a pillow in front of you?

Respiratory physiotherapists are not too impressed with it apparently and have shared this on their ACPAT physio page this morning instead.

quirrels · 06/04/2020 13:54

These techniques were taught to me by a specialist respiratory physiotherapist.
There are some good videos on lung drainage on the European Lung foundation website
europeanlunginfo.org/bronchiectasis/self-management/

Also the Australian Bronchiectasis website

changemynamechangemynamewhen · 06/04/2020 21:14

I did this and it made me really breathless Shock should I worry?

Realitea · 06/04/2020 21:44

Five times is a bit excessive for some and you may have just hyperventilated a bit
Try three times instead!

BuddhaAtSea · 06/04/2020 21:53

The pillow bit is across your chest. If you have large breasts you might want to not put a pillow under, it feels uncomfortable. Imagine leaning over the edge of the bed type of thing, so the pillow elevated the chest, and allows your head to be lower. Jack knife like.
Don’t put a pillow under your head, it hyper extends your neck and you’ll find it hard to breathe.

bluerad · 06/04/2020 21:59

Good advice, thanks
