Advice from Queens Hospital re breathing with CV

Interesting advice from a doc and nurse at Queens - how to protect your lungs from further infection if you have CV.

I’m not a medics but my brother is a nurse and he says that it fits with ITU protocol re treatment of patients with pneumonia:

Marked so I can refer back to this if I need to! Thanks.

Marking and bumping

bumblenbean · 05/04/2020 16:34

Thanks OP. When he says lie on your front with a pillow, does he mean a pillow under your folded arms or under your head I wonder? Just trying to think of the position that would open up the lungs the most 🤔

DateLoaf · 05/04/2020 16:35

Thank you OP.

I cant do the lie on my front part as I'm 36 weeks pregnant! But I'm also asthmatic so will try it lay on my side, does anyone know if that will help?

Could you try doing child’s pose from yoga, with your forehead resting on your folded forearms in front of you?

I have lung disease, and this is regular daily physiotherapy techniques for me after nebulising. I often wonder if those of us with lung disease are better prepared for this as we are already in the know of these techniques. Also huffing and tilting, to help mucus drain. (I didn't watch the whole video, sorry if that was mentioned)

Maggie9000 · 05/04/2020 16:40

@DateLoaf yes lying on your side is effective. My DP and I do physio, he sits in the middle of the sofa, I'll put a pillow on his lap (that's where my stomach/hips will be) and I'll lie tilted and watch telly while he pats my lungs. Not foreplay! Physio Grin

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/04/2020 16:44

Thank you for that. My oldest has a persistent cough that can last for weeks. We suspect it starts as a tick and causes irritation to his throat, resulting in a repeated cycle. I’m going to send this to him as it can’t do any harm and the breathing exercises might have the side effect of helping control his tick. 🤞

Really good advice, thanks for this, I’ll share with friends and family.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 05/04/2020 16:51

If pregnant you could sit at dining table with chair slightly further out and lean forward so arms are flat on table and hands overlapping. Rest head on hands and if you can, open legs so bump fits inbetween.

somewheresorted · 05/04/2020 16:58

Thanks OP - have shared with family

If you google ‘breathing exercises for chest infection’ or for pneumonia you will find nhs helpsheets that describe similar exercises, although most of these advise a much gentler style of breathing and not the holding breath thing; maybe a good thing to check out for those who really struggle with the dizziness that comes with hyperventilating/breath holding.

(I am NOT a health care professional btw so don’t know when the different styles would be recommended or if there is an importance difference but just tried the video one and it has triggered a whole heap of anxiety symptom responses in me because I don’t deal well with dizziness).

Thanks for posting

Thanks!

Anotheruser02 · 05/04/2020 19:34

Thank you for that.

42isthemeaning · 05/04/2020 19:34

Thanks for posting. How often are you meant to do this in a day? (If you have the virus right now and are feeling breathless)?

Westnorwood · 05/04/2020 19:48

Brilliant. So good to have some practical advice.

lizzie1970a · 05/04/2020 19:50

Thanks. And it explains why to me the pictures we've seen of patients in hospital on the news in Italy have been lying on their stomachs.

VaukaPinvhin · 05/04/2020 20:16

Lizzie yes it does explain the patients laid on their fronts. I remember reading that they thought it helped their breathing but didn’t say how. This video explains it. Thanks OP. Really good to know.

Thanks for posting this, will forward to friends and family

Thank you for posting this Smile

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/04/2020 20:31

Thanks for posting. I am also a bit confused about the pillow. I think it’s to give you upper body support so your nose isn’t in the mattress, which could compromise breathing.
