Advice from Queens Hospital re breathing with CV

SmileEachDay · 05/04/2020 09:27

Interesting advice from a doc and nurse at Queens - how to protect your lungs from further infection if you have CV.

I’m not a medics but my brother is a nurse and he says that it fits with ITU protocol re treatment of patients with pneumonia:

Sorry if I missed it but where does the pillow go? Under stomach?

ArriettyJones · 05/04/2020 20:46

Yes I’m confused by that part too @vitreoushumour

I was going to experiment later to try to work it out.

FirTree31 · 05/04/2020 20:52

Thank you

AmelieTaylor · 05/04/2020 20:54

I’ve seen this ousted a few times now & ive passed it on to friends. I’ve decided to make it a daily habit

Lots of people obviously hadn’t seen it, so well done for ousting it again 🌷

VitreousHumour · 05/04/2020 20:54

This seems to say under your hips (and to use several pillows) but the doc in the vid seems to indicate abdomen

Postspecific · 05/04/2020 20:59

This is great, thank you. And interesting about the majority of the lung being on the back. When I had bug a few weeks ago - maybe CV - I was was so breathless with really crippling upper back pain.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/04/2020 21:06

I know this might just be a coincidence, but I’ve had a cough for the last five weeks and since doing these exercises earlier I’ve noticed a huge decrease in my coughing. I didn’t notice that I had some production when I tried it. Is it possible that it’s helped already?

LakeFlyPie · 05/04/2020 21:07

Breathing in slowly through the nose (instead of the fast inhalation through mouth) will enhance the technique and if you can't do the lying on the front position sitting on a chair and leaning forward onto a pile of cushions on a table (or any position between that and a fully proned position will be of benefit)

SilverHawk · 05/04/2020 21:09

Very interesting and useful.
When I had breathing difficulties and pneumonia as a child my mother would tilt me over the edge of the bed (head almost on the floor) and bash my back. Similar principle?

Thanks OP Star
Good practical helpful post

Can anyone read through this and perhaps we can edit it and get it out there. It’s fantastic- I’ve been doing since I saw it on here yesterday but the video is a bit unclear and chatty (I’m sure he says back then front!)

Breathe in and hold for 5 seconds exhale
Breathe in and hold for 5 seconds exhale
Breathe in and hold for 5 seconds exhale
Breathe in and hold for 5 seconds exhale
Breathe in and hold for 5 seconds exhale
Deep strong cough using a tissue.
Breathe in and hold for 5 seconds

Exhale

slightly hard to follow bit about lying in front with cushions
Lie in child yoga position for 10 minutes.

LavenderQuartz · 05/04/2020 22:07

they should remove most tv adverts and replace with this instead!!

quirrels · 05/04/2020 22:24

I always thought my cough was asthma but a year ago I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis.
I have been doing these breathing exercises for a year now, every day and more if I have infection. They have transformed my life and I can highly recommend them if you have a chest infection.
I am on the most vulnerable list because of this and other conditions.

CousinKrispy · 05/04/2020 22:25

Thank you for sharing this.

The cat is giving me a very strange look for practicing this!

quirrels · 05/04/2020 22:25

The principles will be familiar to anyone with cystic fibrosis.

merrygoround51 · 05/04/2020 22:33

Thank you this is helpful

Realitea · 05/04/2020 22:41

If you go to the YouTube clip, there is a comment from a lady who is extremely well qualified who says breathing through the nose is better/safer
And that three breaths are probably better as five will make you pretty dizzy.

Realitea · 05/04/2020 22:41

I mean breathing in through the nose is better but out through the mouth

HotCrossBungle · 05/04/2020 22:46

Link not work for me either. Can someone post again please?

HotCrossBungle · 05/04/2020 22:47

Ignore me, it's at 14:33

Thanks

Madhairday · 05/04/2020 22:47

Thanks op. This is pretty much the active cycle of breathing which people with CF and bronchiectasis use daily and it's really helpful for expelling secretions. Instead of a cough I would say I do more of a huff, I do 6 normal breaths, 6 deeps, back to 6 normal for rest then deeps again, and then 3-4 deep huffs, and then again, and on my other side. It's even better if you can elevate the body so your head is lower than your lungs iyswim, you can do it with pillows. It really does work for getting up some of the deep gunk but if you're struggling with that then you can try a technique called autogenic drainage too which slowly brings the secretions higher up the lungs.
Here's some more info about the active cycle:
