This can't be right?! Exercise ok with symptoms?

I've got a new continuous cough, so self-isolating, as are DH and DD (whole household). I have nasty asthma, so checked with the 111 online Covid19 section. It states that you have to stay home, except for 1 stint of excercise a day. Surely that's not right? Surely you shouldn't be leaving the house at all?!

This can't be right?! Exercise ok with symptoms?

Wouldn't surprise me. Someone I know who has symptoms is still popping to the shops for food, apparently it's fine as long as you 'take precautions' Hmm

@PurpleDaisies ot just seems really stupid advice. NHS or not.
You have symptoms, you stay at home during the isolation period.
I'm just really surprised.

Yes it's correct. I didn't realise this until a friend with symptoms told me this last week. I guess as long as you're just outside and 2m away from others then it's deemed ok. You can't go to the shops etc. I'm not saying I agree, but that is what's allowed.

It wouldn't surprise me. They were questioning Hancock on Question Time on Thursday about his 7 day isolation and whether it should be 14 days in line with other countries.

Apparently it is fine though. Hmm

I honestly don't think the government has dealt with this very well to date.

Woah this has blown my mind. I haven’t left the house in weeks! I’ve actually been too unwell and wouldn’t want to risk making some else unwell (although officially I shouldn’t be contagious at all by this point). But worth knowing these are the rules.

This is bloody ridiculous. We did a fortnight in self isolation and literally didn't leave the house. I think that's what it should mean

Yes, I noticed this as well, the NHS website contradicts the government website which says you should stay at home and not leave the house, even if you don't have any symptoms (but another member of the household does).

That is correct. I've got a friend who is a doctor and has had the virus (presumed, not tested) and pneumonia for over 3 weeks now. In the last week (since she's been feeling well enough), she's been going out for walks. I was surprised but assume she knows what's allowed and what's not. She isn't able to go into shops though.

If possible, you should not go out even to buy food or other essentials, other than exercise, and in that case at a safe distance from others.

My family member who is a doctor says once you have symptoms you are pretty much past the stage of passing it on, and if you are 2m away you can't pass it on.

Yes, I was really surprised when someone told me about this but it is true. However you are not allowed to go to shops.

Yes it corrects. I went for walks when I had symptoms. As long as you follow social distancing and don't go into any shops, it's fine.

Didn’t Boris Johnson day his isolation was extended because he was still showing symptoms (a fever) as per government rules?

I'm sure the guidance has changed... when we started isolation both my husband and I were certain the guidance was no leaving the house at all. So we didn't. It was only as we go to the last few days of our fortnight that someone pointed this out to me. It does seem odd that in theory I could have been taking my coughing and sputtering kids for walks each day.

And disconcerting that now we are able to go out we could be passing lots of people with temps and coughs. As we are discovering that many people don't make any effort to give space as they pass.

Exercise is really important to health, in ways that are not direct and not obvious. For example it really boosts the immune system. It is also important to mental health which also helps the immune system. Please don't believe this myth that only exists here on MN that you will infect people/be at risk if you go outside for eg a walk. If you practice social distancing it is almost impossible for the virus to pass to another even if you are infected.

If you read the government advice fully it doest contradict NHS.

"If you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms that may be caused by coronavirus, then household members must stay at home and not leave your house for 14 days (more information in the ending self-isolation section below). If possible, you should not go out even to buy food or other essentials, other than exercise, and in that case at a safe distance from others.
